Verizon 3G Speed - Slowed Way Down Recently

Columbus, OH here as well and have noticed the same thing. I even called Verizon to notify them, and they insisted that as long as I have a connection (no matter how slow), there was nothing wrong.

Getting fed up.
 
Right now, one of the DInc's on my plan isn't getting 3G at all, so I can't comment on it's speeds. But I can say that the 3G connection on my Droid has slowed down horribly. I often have to turn on WiFi while trying to load a page to get it to work.

While trying to solve the many probs I've had with the DInc on the phone with a Verizon rep, I did inquire about this, as it's been noticed on all the phones on my plan (ok, so really just the 3 smartphones). They did some kinda trouble tag (something like that...I know it was "tag"), and said they were gonna send someone out to my area to check the tower(s).

I also inquired about whether or not 4G could have any impact. That last roll out gave 4G to each and every market surrounding us, but not us. I had been told I can expect it in the area during the summer (which makes sense living in a resort town). That lead me to question whether or not Verizon getting my market ready for LTE would impact 3G, which he told me is something completely diff, and would not impact 3G at all. Yanno, for those wondering. lol
 
Why am I getting faster upload (451kbps) than download (297kbps)?

I did 3 other speed tests in a row, two of them topping at out .49mbps down, the other at .29 down. Upload speeds were rather consistent in the 400kbps range.

Did someone mention there's a way to prevent, or counter, bandwidth throttling on VZW? Can someone post a link or something?

First of all, in the future you'll probably want to post question in the Droid X forum. Many issues/questions/topics are device specific (although this one really isn't).

Secondly, here is the method I am aware of. I have not implemented it, because like 95% of users, I'm not being throttled in anyway. You almost certainly aren't either. Anyways, here you go... [MOD] Uncapped Data For Your ROMS (Skyraider, Virtuous, OMGB, ETC) - xda-developers

Third, it's not unusual to have up speed faster than down on a mobile connection.

Fourth, speeds are highly variable, depending a lot of variables (tower speed, user load, if they're pushing out updates, signal to noise ratio, so forth and so on).
 
in SW Michigan I'm getting a 145ms ping, 415 kpbs dl and 624kbps ul.

The connection slowing could have a lot to do with all the new devices added to the network. Google just announced that 500,000 droid devices are activated daily. That is a lot of additional data to move around. I understand that not all of them are on vzw, but a fair number of them are for sure.
 
My data is abysmally slow during the peak hours here at work, but I believe that is due to a very large hiring binge, coupled with the company switching work phones to verizon. They have just overloaded the towers in my location.
 
Hello this is Evan from Verizon NRB (Network Repair Bureau)

We have noticed these issues on the 3G network. The 3G network has significantly been loaded due to so many smartphone devices being activated and used. I can confirm speeds being reduced by half in most areas during much of the day. I myself as an early adopter of an Android device on VZW found my speeds have been reduced by half since I got my Inc last year. Used to get 2.4mb down and now can only sustain just below 1mb in my area.

This is not VZW "throttling" your service but simply the towers and network equipment being overloaded. There is not much anyone can do until the links can be upgraded and with VZW spending so much on 4G right now there is little chance for 3G upgrades. IMO and from what I am seeing with the software network monitoring tools we use here, its only getting worse due to the mass amounts of 3G devices being used and activated every day.
 
just came here for the first time in months to see if I'm the only one. I've been seeing issues over the last month or so. Just ran a test and got .347Mbps :(
 
Yeah speeds are much lower now, 300M down and 600M up and dropping. Network load may have something to do with it, but even in the morning it is slow. I think they are more than likely throttling 3G to enhance their 4G speeds.
 
I've noticed a slow down in the last month in the southwest portion of Virginia. Several co-workers have mentioned it too.

Just ran a speed test, ping: 766ms; 120kbps down; 165kbps up
13 days into this bill cycle, and only used ~600mb total. I would really like to know what's going on here.
 
3g speeds are highly volatile due to an infinite amount of factors. That is also the reason you will never see a mobile company guarantee their network speeds. Everyone's speed is technically throttled at different times of day to prevent the network from being overloaded and to *spread out the limited bandwidth evenly to every customer*. Even then, the data is still prioritized for certain connections. ie: connections downloading small files will receive higher priority(more bandwidth) than connections downloading very large files.

It is very important to realize that there is only so much bandwidth to go around, the more customers on the network at any given time, the slower the speeds you will see. It's comparable to when cable providers first started providing internet. The first customers had excellent throughput speeds but as more and more of their neighbors signed up, the speeds slowed down. Now those same companies are "managing their network" the same way mobile companies do by prioritizing traffic.

Verizon will notify you if you are officially being targeted/throttled.
 
PFFFFFFFFFFT I'll trade you guys. I'm just north of Dallas, TX and am currently getting .11 Mbps down and .14 Mbps up. I used to be ~1.5 down and 1.1 up. Who knows what the culprit is but I'm bout ready to get off verizon.
 
I am experiencing the same thing in New Jersey. I blocked software updates as my phone is rooted and tethered.So I'm running version 2.3. My download speeds are1-1.5 Mbps but my uploads are .25- .30 Mbps. They used to be better and I think the trouble is in their network because of throttling. Remember the 4G phones are being released and they want to sell them really bad. My speeds are the same running the test directly from the phone or tethered. Tomorrow I will test from various locations like where 4G is working and see if it makes a difference. Maybe if enough people complain, they'll do something about their upload speed.
 
I am also a verizon employee but must still call the noc for bandwidth issues like this. I was taking readings at various locations in New jersey today and the readings were all over the place. It wasn't like this before. I think they are either working on or tweaking the network. They are in the process of installing 4G and it is pretty complicated.

NW Michigan, new to Verizon with a Galaxy Nexus. Ranging from .4-1 Mb Down and .3-.5 Mb Up. Usually low end of range. Was disappointed with ATTs EDGE speed in the rural areas here so trying what Verizon says is their 3G. Had hoped for better than this
