[Verizon] Can't even begin to Root...

After speaking with one of our fine and esteemed members, I was going to take the plunge and finally root. I've been super tentative because it always seems like I'm one of those folks who runs into road blocks and the last thing I want to do it brick my phone.
But anyway, I'm finally thrilled to get going and the above, said member made everything as easy as could be for me... showed me exactly what to download, what to do and was even willing to walk me through it, however, I can't even begin the process because the latest version of Wug's won't/can't install the drivers. It says it fails, and locks up my PC. So, I reboot and try again but try to install the drivers manually, it still locks up at the ADB part. I'm at a loss and so is the kind sir who was helping me (I've kept his name out of it in case that's the way he prefers).

Any help would be amazing. Thank you in advance. -Joe

I mean, I can do it by adb, but I prefer to use wug's toolkit. I don't know, I type deslycix and clicking stuff is easier for me.
You should however at least learn how to do it by adb, just in case you get into a situation where you need to install a different recovery or something

When I buy a new video game, do I read the instructions or the tutorial? F no! I dive right in! Lol. That's how I roll... until I get to the point where I'm stuck and find the solution was easy if I'd read the instructions

Voided's tutorial is the way to go IMO because it uses the sdk. I'm not downplaying the root kits, they're great and have introduced many new faces to the rooting world which is awesome. But if you want to do it old skool and be able to get out of most any tight spot you might end up in, the sdk is the stuff. Plus, when you use the sdk, members here can help you through any issues because the sdk (adb/fastboot) uses known and always repeatable commands and methods. It takes "maybe" out of the equation.

i am a fan of wugfresh, his work is great!
but for some reason i have seen a lot of issues with his nexus stuff for other members, maybe its a windows issue. but for me, it isnt as safe as standard adb methods

I hope you don't mind, but I might have to PM you with some very silly questions (silly for you because you know this stuff).

For starters, when you say point the download to the c prompt, how/when do you do that? What does that even mean? Thank you.

Apparently Wug's Toolkit allows you to back up apps & app data so you can restore it all on the other side of the unlock... it'll even backup your pic and videos!

GEEEZ I wish the earlier versions had done that! And if it did, I sure didn't know to use it...

I have rooted every phone I've owned and tried to use Wug's on Windows 7 and it just wouldn't work. So I found this toolkit [GNex TOOLKIT V7.4] Drivers, Backup, Unlock, Root, CWM, Flash, Mods + MORE [SPRINT] - xda-developers. I read the instructions and watched the videos and had 0 problems doing it. Hope this helps

Well, tried this out, because I was afraid of the other method and it too failed. I got right up to the point where I was about to unlock, I had to put the phone into fastboot and when it went to install drivers for the second time the first part passed and the next one failed. I don't know why but it won't work. Something's got to be up with either my phone or computer. It is a pity because it was going so smoothly and easy to follow at that point, because like I said a picture is worth a thousand words for me.

Ok did you actually get the phone into fastboot at that part? The first time I did it I got an error then redid the whole thing. Got to the point when it was going to unlock the bootloader THEN put it into fastboot and I worked from there. Sorry this didn't help ya

I actually put it into fastboot, then it tried installing a few more drivers and I got the SAME error message that I got with Wugs.

Then the phone hung up and I had to battery pull.

Did you say you tried installing the actual sdk to your computer? And did you also install the "naked driver" (to your PC) that Voided linked in post #5 of this thread?

If so, could we perhaps try to dig a little deeper on this effort? Starting with adb first...if you installed the sdk to the root of your computer's C drive, plug in the phone like you're just charging it normally. Make sure USB debugging is on. Then open a command prompt on the PC and enter the following commands:

cd c:\

cd android-sdk-windows\platform-tools

adb devices

At that time, it should output your phone ID. If that works, let us know. If not, let us know what you got for an output.

Never mind, GOT IT!!!
Rebooted the PC and tried again! I'm on JB!!!
Now one quick question...where's my GOogle Play app so I can get things back up to snuff? It isn't on any home screen or in the app drawer. THanks!

Never mind! Got it! I rebooted the PC and all went well. I'm on JB, but have no Google Play on any screen or in the app drawer. Any help with that!?

Press on the main Apps icon on the homescreen, then when it brings up all your apps, note the small Google Play icon in the upper right portion of the screen just under the clock.
