Verizon Pre-order, Release date, and speculation thread

Class action suit? I'd be down. I'm in my 20s, and I'm hoping to ride this unlimited data plan until my retirement (or cell phones become obsolete)

The only way you would get unlimited data from verizon for life is if you keep and use your s3 for the remainder of your life. Those of us who are getting grandfathered into the unlimited data with our sg3 will lose it once we uprgrade again in 2 years. So cherish these final 2 years.

I do find it hard to believe that Samsung changed the design of the phone for Verizon alone, changed it from the design that is identical for every other carrier AROUND THE WORLD. Additionally, not realistic for Verizon to air a commercial that lacks branding. So it had to be digitally added for the commercial.

Yeah, I think it was digitally added because it looks a little wonky at times and it makes sense that they would want to have the Verizon logo on the front for the commercial (where its important to note they dont even specify its a Galaxy S III) for product symmetry and to throw their logo around more to subliminally inform buyers.

You can keep unlimited when you buy a new phone so long as youre not buying it at the subsidized price. Basically, you can keep unlimited forever (or until they change their policy) as long as you dont mind shelling out $600+ for a phone every time you decide to upgrade phones. Which, while it sounds steep, may not actually even be that bad if you dont mind selling your old phone.

Wrong.

If you pay full price for a phone you can keep unlimited data after the 28th. If you upgrade at the subsidized price you will lose unlimited data.

As far as I know you will keep unlimited data as long as you don't but a subsidized phone from V, so as long as you buy at full price or off eBay or a similar place you will still keep unlimited data. Although it is possible that V will change something else in the future.

Please tell me that home button isn't maroon. If they mess with the blue one I may be running around on the 10th to find a white one instore to exchange with

This is the only thing I really didn't like about the look of the blue one. I compared the blue and white S IIIs side by side, and the button on the blue one most definitely does not blend in as well as the button on the white one. It doesn't look bad, by any means, but was part of my decision to ultimately go with the white one instead. The pebble blue is also dark, and looks much more like standard fare black and charcoal colored phones with chrome accents. You can't even see the metal fake texturing unless you look really closely at the phone.

Neither phone is ugly, however. They both look professional, sharp, and attractive, while still being very simple and sleek. You will likely be impressed with the look and feel of both phones. I certainly am. I'm glad I got to see and use real working phones today, rather than dummies. The screens are absolutely gorgeous. The is THE phone right now on Verizon. Hands down.

Oh my god. That Verizon branding looks absolutely AWFUL. I seriously hope that's not real...

I also spoke to a Verizon rep who confirmed that it goes by activation date, not pre-order date as to whether you get to keep unlimited data. So unless we get our phones tomorrow, we will likely have no more unlimited :(

Verizon's official response on Twitter, for anyone still wondering about unlimited:

https://twitter.com/vzwsupport/status/212612245203582977

@M You may keep whatever plan is listed on the order confirmation. If it shows unlimited data as the feature, you may keep it! ^DGM
Even though you're being charged and shipped the phone later, you are signing the contract with the plan selected, whether in the store or online. I did this today. The rep had to go up his chain of command to get a definite answer for me, but he confirmed that the unlimited will indeed remain on my plan since I completed the order before the 28th. I recommend those of you with unlimited that want to keep unlimited and get this phone hurry on in to pre-order, however.

Edit:

In addition, on the forum where I found this info, a Verizon rep did finally reply in official fashion:

Hi BurtReynolds (and all forum members),

I would like to confirm that any upgrade orders (including preorders for GS3) processed by June 27, 2012, will keep current calling/data plans even if activation occurs in July due to preordering delivery dates.
All upgrade orders processed on or after June 28, 2012 for a discounted device will choose one of the calling/data plans that will be rolled out on that date. Additionally, an option to keep current calling plans is available if upgrade is processed at full retail price.

Exactly as I was saying...you will no be able to keep unlimited data for life. We will lose our unlimited data once we upgrade after the sg3 in 2-3 years since no one is going to buy a full retail phone ($600) rather than just upgrading and extending their contract.

Yes in 2 years when you qualify for an upgrade and the Samsung galaxy 4,000 extreme Octuple core comes out, you are simple going to use your upgrade, purchase it for $250, extend your contract and lose your unlimited data package. No point in purchasing a phone in full retail when you have the option to upgrade.

When someone is asking how you can keep your unlimited plan you shouldnt selectively screen the answer based on the actions that you would take. Your answer implied that it is impossible to keep unlimited data when we renew in another 2 years which is false (unless Verizon decides to change policies between now and then).

Second, thats a pretty big assumption. Personally, I'll decide whether to forego my unlimited plan based on the plans offered by Verizon in 2 years and the worth of my S III. If I can buy a phone better than the S III for around the same price as a subsidized new phone then I will have very little incentive to get rid of my unlimited plan.

Definitely not selectively screening the answer based solely on the actions I would take. More like, its the thought process that any educated person would do. if you have the option to upgrade, why spend an extra $300-400 on a phone when you dont need to? Whether your plan is unlimited or you get switched over to one of the tiered pricing, your monthly costs wont change unless you use over 2gb a month.

Full retail price will never be anywhere near subsidized price with smartphones. They will always be a few hundred more. Then there would be no reason to have contracts. Verizon, At&t, etc will never have the retail "non contract" price as low as the uprgraded/subsidized price.

So really the only time when people decide to pay the $600+ for a full retail phone is when they aren't able to upgrade. Or because they dont want to extend their contract.

You still filtered information based on what you think an "educated person" (a completely subjective criteria) would do. You even admit that keeping unlimited data may be of some value (see the price difference between unlimited data and the price of 4+GB/month), which may be in play here since we dont know how much data the person asking the question uses.

And your calculation isnt factoring in the resale value of the S III (which may be good, which may be poor).

Regardless, the question was whether you could keep unlimited data in 2 years to which you responded no which is incorrect (factually, because you can). Your original answer was incorrect by omission and now youre trying to justify that omission.

All the repeated posts by people who clearly haven't read any of the other posts about unlimited data and/or the ship by dates ... are making my head hurt.

I think what this thread needs is more people who know a friend of a brother of a sister-in-law's former college room mate speculating wildly about release dates prior to 7/9.

I most definitely will buy at full retail. I anticipate using a decent amount of data and shelling out extra up front will likely be more cost effective.

My half sister in law's half brother has a 3rd cousin that is a direct descendent of Randall McCoy who thinks the S3 is being help captive in a warehouse by the decedents of Devil Lance Hatfield.

Of course, VZW is banking on most people not doing that. If a big margin of "bitter clingers" hang on beyond a year, watch VZW toon to change to "end of contract". Just sayin'. "toon" is on purpose, since I consider as a cartoon.

Then again, maybe pushback will go the other way, since with 4G, hidef media streaming and cloud- THAT VZW IS PUSHING PEOPLE TO USE and the lame a$$ low data in the plans, perhaps consumer pushback will force VZW to review the situation and go a better direction for consumers.

If I were Sprint and Tmo, I would plan to merge and use unlimited data (with high use abuser throttling- not data killing) as a market differentiator. We could then have three big carriers and perhaps less collusion (yes, I think Att and VZW do it in some way that is too subjective to nail them).

Gahhh! I just checked and they've got my billing address wrong! Dang Verizon!

I had the same thing, and my shipping address..
They fixed my shipping even though the first person I talked to said they coudn't
(a itts ticket was created)

The lady thought that the billing address didnt matter since I payed with a credit card. but we will see.

Guys, I realize this has been "discussed" a number of times on this post, but FINALLY someone has posted something concrete from Verizon, which is what I was looking for originally. Since everytime someone calls into Verizon they get a different answer on the topic! Thanks for posting this form Verizon directly, I just found it odd with all the confusion Verizon wouldn't put in HUGE bold letters on its website that if you pre-order your galaxy s3 you won't lose your unlimited plan.

:-)

So wait a minute. My wife and I are on a shared plan. We have the cheapest voice and text plans, which suit our needs fine. When we both had smart phones we each had a data plan. She downgraded to a feature phone recently and dropped her data plan, which now saves us $30 per month. We'll both be eligible for an upgrade after 7/20. If I upgrade to a GS3 on or after 6/28 does this mean we'll be forced into their more expensive unlimited/share everything plans, even if only one of us has a smart phone and we have no need for unlimited text and minutes?:stupid:

Unfortunately, yes, it appears so...

I have a nieces, friends, babies daddy. That works for the Verizon greeters cousins step mom's boyfriend....

Please read the previous 35 pages of posts. The horse has been beat to death.

Actually I'm glad the 28th is tomorrow, and we can enjoy Friday saying "sorry, should have paid attention to the phandroid forums" Education is a beautiful thing !

P.S. I hope the verizon logo is NOT on the front.
Ordered the blue and white- (I will give the hubby the one I don't like as much :))

Since this is my first time posting, I hope it doesn't sound to mean. I'm glad to no longer be a "lurker"
