Root [Verizon] Starting Root - Some questions and maybe more soon

uhmm well I selected "backup and restore" then "backup" and it instantly started chuggin away at something, it's still going and looks like there's a way to go...not sure if it's going to the correct place...?
That's ok...you can always move the backup once its done from the internal memory (if it went there) to your external.
I'd check right now but I'm messin with my phone atm too:)

There are two types of roms for your device. AOSP roms, and Touchwiz roms. Kernels will also be of the same breakdown (AOSP or Touchwiz). CleanRom, Synergy, etc are Touchwiz roms and will be somewhat similar to what you are use to. CyanogenMod(CM) and AOKP are AOSP roms and will look and feel quite different if you've never run stock android before. Also, AOSP roms require a second flashable zip called gapps in order to run properly. There are plenty of options to choose from because this is such a popular device.

It's done now, and I see the option to backup to external Sdcard that I should have looked more carefully for, lol. How do I move whatever I just did to the card? I dont' see an option for it.

You can do that one of two ways.
1. With the file browser on your phone.
2. When your phone is plugged into your computer and you can see both the phone and external storage. Just drag it over. (That's my personal preference to do it:) )

@jhawk...thanks:D

awesome I think I did it correctly and I have it on the card now. Should I delete the first one ? I think i saw that from the recovery menu?

I just dragged it over to the card area and it is now in process of copying it over. didn't give me any other options

Ok it finished copying and I deleted the one from phone (via the computer , not recovery menu), and i still see the same one in the card folder so I think that's a good sign.

I have seen the page on Clean Rom before and I think I want to try that one out first just as a starting point. Since you surely know that one in and out , what do I do if i want to run Clean Rom? :D and do you run any special kernel ?

I just run the kernel that came with it.
I looked into trying other kernels and it seemed that the consensus for a kernel for Cleanrom, is to run the one that came with it.

btw again, I fixed my sd card :)

Oh i just saw on a review of the ROM on youtube that it is downloaded all clean wiped of all previous apps and stuff...how do I get those back on after wards, or before, what do I do to be able to get them back the easiest?

The CleanRom link in my sig will take you to that page.

Is that what you mean?

Also, just be sure to check the md5 after download.
If you are not sure what that means, I can explain.:)

THE best app, in my opinion, now that you are rooted, is TitaniumBackup.
Also, I recommend getting the ProKey for it (the unlock key). It's worth the money it costs.
You can backup alot of things with it and then restore them.
But, be careful what your restore. I just back up and restore my user apps and/or data...not system apps.
You can also freeze apps before deletion. (like addtional bloat or system apps). But thats another whole discussion.:)

Yeah I'm not sure what you mean lol. In general I'm not sure how to get it from the interwebs magically onto the phone-ma-jiggy.

haha...you made me smile.:)

If you want to try the Cleanrom, go to the website:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832070

Just download it to your computer, and then move it to your ext. sd card.
Presto! Its on your sd card ready to flash!
You can also use your file browser (depending on which one you have) to check the md5 of the download. If it matches the one posted on the website, it's clean and not corrupted.

The easiest way to do it is to simply go to the website on the phone and download it that way. The other way is to download it on a computer, then hook up your phone with the usb cable to the computer and drag it over to your external sd.

Edit: Ninja'd :p

I kind of understand how going from the phone might be quicker. i am going to try it. Not sure if you mentioned already but since I read that when I switch to CleanRom it will wipe all my apps, so what do I do now to ensure that I can get my stuff back after switching?

See my post # 90 :)

Ouch $7 , does it really do much more than the free one? And what else would I be restoring other than user apps ? isn't that everything? :)

It is steap, but it allows you to batch backup and restore without interruptions. The normal will ask you if you want to install each and every app when you restore them, while the pro will do it all in one command. It does give you the options to back up other things as well such as wifi passwords, bluetooth pairings, and to freeze apps(though this is less useful since ICS 4.0.1).

Yeah, I know but with the Pro version, you can batch restore.
Like, instead of going thru each app to restore, you can multi-select apps to restore.
Also, you can freeze unwanted, or problematic apps ( to troubleshoot apps that misbehave), among other things.
Try the free version first...if you like it, then consider the pro version:)

Edit: now I got ninjad! :D

I might go for it then if it is really worth it I will trust you guys' better judgement :D.

However, I am looking now at the Lite version of cleanRom, could it possibly be a better choice? I havn't done a ton of research and they both look overall OK. I might end up liking the Non-touchwiz ones but this one looked like a good first one to try.

So what do you think about the lite version over the full one?
