(VZW) Nexus 4.0.X Update Discussion

What's the best way to back up my Nexus that is locked and not rooted? I want to unlock and root then restore a backup of apps and what not. Any help is appreciated.

AOKP b37 and IMM76K perform nearly identically for me at my desk. I had a nice post written out with info on how I tested and links to the IMM76K image I used, yada yada but after accidentally closing the window I don't feel like re-typing it.

So anyway, here's the results. I'm not sure how it's possible people are seeing 10 dBm difference going from 4.0.2 + 4.0.4 radios to stock 4.0.4 unless 4.0.4 computes the dBm differently...

my goodness, it's an effing PHONEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Yeah, we forget :) Seriously, I try to protect myself from upgrade nightmares by making sure that the phone/computer/software/et al can do what I need when I first get them. If not they immediately go back. Like everyone I've experienced waiting, waiting, waiting for fixes for problems that I shouldn't have to put up with. Phones should just effing work :D

Edit: I should add that I don't have the GNex. I'm waiting to see if this latest update really fixes it before I consider putting it on the list of possible upgrades.

A bit of searching in the "All Things Root" sub-forums might give more detailed results.... but:

Grab ES File Explorer and use the app manager in the app to backup all of your apps.

Go into any apps that have information you want to keep like SMS messages, notes, bookmarks, etc., and look for options to export that data to the SD card. Some Launchers have an option to export their setup to SD as well, so it can save you some effort if you don't use the stock launcher.

Save all your media (pictures, wallpapers and whatnot) to your computer just in case. Even backup the whole contents of your SD card if you want to be extra cautious.

Take screenshots of everything you have setup just the way you want it... like your homescreens, folders, whatever.

And uh... that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Actually, the SD card MUST be backed up, because unlike a factory data reset, unlocking wipes the SD storage as well. There will be nothing left after unlocking.

What I've seen with past OTA updates from VZW...of course YMMV:

Updates were pushed overnight when wireless network traffic is lower. I have yet to get an OTA update during the day. OTA updates have been pleasant morning surprises.

ahhhhh finally!!!! I was about to do the trick that other guy suggested but I checked for an update first and finally it showed up!!!

My phone got the 4.0.4 update at exactly 12:00am. The whole process took 10 minutes.

I live in New York.

However, as had been happening to me previously, my phone had been ghost dialing *22899 and had updated the PRL.

Now, right after the update, it ghost dialed, my PRL is still at 15119.

I'm not noticing any better signal strength or more bars BUT I do notice that it is keeping data and I am able to browse the net even when I have no bars. I couldn't do that before the update.

Best I got sitting in my recliner before the update was -93dBm 2 asu on 3g, still getting those some numbers. I have yet to see 4g turn on.

EDIT: Finally seeing a 4g signal, went from -120 to -111. Not a huge difference but it is better.

EDIT 2: Its holding 4g very well where it never held it before. I also noticed that it switches from 3g to 4g in a matter of a couple seconds!!!

Bam! Got the update!

Sioux Falls, SD. Friday, June 1st, at 11:30PM:) I've always had great 4G coverage here in Sioux Falls, but I have noticed in my basement I'm getting an extra bar, who knows if it matters. But I'll take it. Still love my LTE Nexus!

I just got the ota but when it powers off to install it gives me the dead android with a reg triangle?

I'm rooted not rommed on Verizon
Do I really need to go back to factory to install this?
