Want a boost in performance? Gumbo custom kernel!

Ok so I tried putting this kernel in. I put it on my sd card then applied it. When I went to reboot I just stick on the htc screen. Tried a nandroid backup and still doing just sticking on the htc screen after that as well. I'm clueless now any ideas? Maybe I need to pull the sd card and remove the zip then try a back up? Any help would be great.

Edit: I'm rooted, running Fresh 1.1 rom.

Update: Never mind, I applied from sd the fresh rom again and looks like its booting up now. hope I'm not speaking to soon.

I just rooted yesterday, finally. I installed fresh 1.1 with gumbo and I can't believe the speed difference, it's amazing I was putting up with the lag I had before. I was dealing with 35-45 mb of ram free and now I'm have 75-90 mb free. Today I added overclock widget and haven't noticed much difference yet though. I would highly recommend rooting to anyone on the fence about it.

get this: 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download GK-0.31-signed.zip

1.) Put the zip on the root of your SD Card
2.) Power cycle phone
3.) Turn on holding VOLUME DOWN
4.) Press the HOME KEY
5.) Go to APPLY SDCARD:CHOOSE ZIP
6.) Select GK-031-SIGNED.ZIP
7.) Post a 'thank you dreamliner' reply

Thanks Dreamliner

I loaded this up using the above and was a little disappointed at first. My first boot was choppy and slow! At first I was wishing I had stuck with Fresh 1.1 by itself, but after two soft reboots and just letting it sit for a bit (assuming the OS is figuring out how to optimize) everything is nice and snappy!

I recommend that if you don't see results right away give it a little while and maybe a soft reboot. Mine is clipping right along now. Still not using SetCPU. I'll give that a go next.

Loving Fresh 1.1 and Gumbo 0.31! Thanks to all for the helpful posts! Also for those who have or haven't done this, be sure you don't have a task manager/killer running. I didn't notice much improvement until I uninstalled it, at least that's what helped me ;)

I installed the gumbo kernel and it does work a lot faster, but I can not get SetCPU to work. Some people said it works with this kernel, but I can install it then when I run the app it stays in a black screen and does nothing. Any tips? Thanks

Call me crazy but I can't see a difference in my performance. I installed the kernal and overclock widget with the proper settings but it seems the same...IDK...

if you're running a task killer... uninstall it.. some have seen a boost in performance after doing that.. if no task killer is installed.. reboot the phone.

I had to download new updates for superpermission or whatever it's called. Otherwise, my phone was stuck on the blank black screen.

there's no need to run a task killer.. that's what the gumbo kernel is doing .. except it's using the built in processes to accomplish the same results. in fact, it'll do it cleaner..

Go to Manage applications, then click Development, then "turn on" USB debugging, and everything should work perfectly :D

Hope this helps....it has others.

the gumbo kernal does seem faster, but my battery seems to be draining faster...interesting.

Are you using SetCPU? Or a task killer?

If you're using a task killer, get rid of it.

If you're using SetCPU, put it on either "performance" or "ondemand". That should certainly help.

Also, define "draining faster". Are you talking like 8 hours of battery life, or 18?

I did have SetCPU, but removed it..."draining faster"...I mean it's not lasting as long as it has, since i loaded fresh weeks ago, it'd go about 15-18 hours and still be above %25 life, now it wasn't even 12 hours today and it was in the red around %20...I did reboot it today figuring it may help end some process that could be running....sorry for the rambling...

Hmm, SetCPU seems to be what helps people get better battery life and performance out of the kernel. Seems odd that your battery life would suffer. Mine has actually gone up. Sitting in the middle of a lake this weekend, and I was at about 60% after 17-18 hours, plugged it back into the charger for a half hour or so while we moved to a different shack, and then it was unplugged for the next 6 hours, which I used it VERY heavily, GPS and internet and texting and everything I could think of, dropped back down to about 60%. Charged it back up that evening to nearly full, and it lasted all night again with pretty much no service and using it for games quite a bit until I finally fell asleep. I'm pretty sure that I could get well over 30 hours out of a full charge with average usage for me, in a good service area. Not a huge improvement for me from before the kernel, but it's an improvement.

I suggest you check Spare Parts and see what's been keeping your phone awake or using your CPU

I went about 36 hours and still had 20% battery with normal usage. Before the Gumbo kernel I would make it maybe 24 hours before I'd get to 20%.

I installed the Gumbo kernel over Fresh, and my own unscientific benchmark showed a dramatic increase in performance

That benchmark is playing music in the player, and measure the length of silence before the ringtone starts when a call is received. Stock was nearly 3 seconds, while Fresh+Gumbo is about 1.5 seconds. (I had previously modified my slot cycle index because of this phone's nearly unacceptable ringer lag)

I'm another one of those people who wasn't sure about rooting and all these crazy words I had no idea what they meant, but after reading for about 45 mins and following the easy directions, I have rooted, installed Fresh 1.1 and then Gumbo and it doesn't even make sense how this phone got faster but I'll take it!

One question...I'm still confused on this nandroid backup stuff. I only backed up my contacts through Google but didn't back up my phone (although everything is just like it was before I rooted)...I guess it makes no sense to do a back up now?

One more...when Sprint releases 2.1, what do I do to get that now that I've rooted?

Thanks, love this board, you people are awesome!
