Want a boost in performance? Gumbo custom kernel!

im new to sprint and just got the htc hero. i wish i knew what you guys were talking about! im loving this phone but i want to experience the "boost in performance" also!!

One question...I'm still confused on this nandroid backup stuff. I only backed up my contacts through Google but didn't back up my phone (although everything is just like it was before I rooted)...I guess it makes no sense to do a back up now?

One more...when Sprint releases 2.1, what do I do to get that now that I've rooted?

Thanks, love this board, you people are awesome!

so you didn't make a nandroid backup (as the rooting instruction told you to do) right after gaining root access? or after flashing Fresh but before Gumbo? lets just be happy you didn't run into problems.. the nandroid backup is a backup of the entire phone at that time. if you had a problem applying Fresh.. you could restore to the pint right after you rooted.. or if you made a backup before Gumbo you could go back to that state if Gumbo had problems.. by not making a nandroid backup.. if you have a problem at this point you'll be forced to RUU and then reroot

as far as what to do when 2.1 is released by Sprint? simple... do nothing.. until the Devs release new ROMs... normally within hours of the Sprint release... then flash the new ROM

So installing this .zip will make the phone faster by itself or you still need to play with setCPU to see the gains? I flashed the .zip and really havnt noticed any increase in speed yet. I can still make the keyboard struggle when typing out a long text, but will admit its not as bad. However, it didnt do it consistantly anyway. I will wait and see if it ever has those really laggy moments with this kernal installed. I was just wondering why I didnt see these amazing results everyone else is getting?

Camdz,

SetCPU is just to throttle the CPU downwards to save the battery. It does not speed things up. They are pretty clear about that if you read the XDA developers forum. It has to do with the fact that HTC did not release some closed source cpu throttling software iirc.

As for the speed, it is all relative. You might be just be a faster typist... As a slow typer (I have big hands and rock climbing callouses) on a bare bones widget/ no eyecandy setup, it wasn't that often that I saw a lot of keyboard lag. Now I don't see _any_, but that's just because I'm not capable of typing any faster (I have landscape turned off and usually only type with one finger).

Anyone having issues with SetCPU? I am not having the SU issues described earlier, but my SetCPU doesn't seem change when I try and make changes as described in the XDA thread. It always stays at 528 and "performance". I try and change my sliders, which do change, and select "on demand", hit refresh, but it says it is still running at 528. Whenever I go back into the program the sliders remain where I set them but the mode always changes back to performance and the top menu states it is at 528. I did un-install, re-install and restart as well.

same issue. honestly i decided it was fast enough without the use of setcpu and didnt try to fix it. sorry i cant help, but adding that i too have the same issue.

Odd. Works great for me. I just tried changing from On Demand to Performance, and back. In fact, when I opened it while it was set "on demand", it was running at 480 or something like that. Switched it back and it went back up to 528.

It acts like there is an "enter" button or something that I have to hit to approve the changes in order to apply them. Did anyone have to do anything with SU permissions, because I was never prompted too.

When you first opened SetCPU, it should have asked something like "allow" or "always allow" or "deny". That's got to do with SU permissions I believe

Yeah, I never had that prompt... either time I installed it. If I didn't get that prompt could that prevent me from changing settings...that would make sense with my inability to do so now. Seems like the issue maybe with my SU Permissions app?

Honestly, I'm a bit stumped.

I'm no expert with SU or SetCPU. You might want to email the dev or ask around on XDA.

Reinstalling the app did nothing for me either. What I had to do was reinstall Fresh and Gumbo. Once I did that when I opened SetCPU it asked for permission.

Understandable, and honestly I think there is less lag on the keyboard, but time will tell with that. Sometimes I would be typing an entire word ahead of whats on the screen and that hasnt happened yet. A lot of that issue is that I use the compact qwerty, so Im pressing each button multiple times and moving on. I never have lag issues with the full keyboard, but its harder for me to type on.Opening programs/apps, switching to and from landscape mode, etc didnt seem to speed up either. Thats why I asked, but I may just be expecting too much.

To confirm: you just flashed Fresh 1.1 again and then the Gumbo Kernel over it? Did you have to restore a nandroid backup first? Did you have to re-flash the FLASH PLAYER fix again?

Just want to make sure I am doing this correct...have had no problems with Fresh 1.1 prior to this.

I didnt have any problems with Fresh either. Fresh was still great AFTER I did Gumbo. My only problem was that SetCPU wouldn't work. I reinstalled the app twice and when it still wouldnt work I decided to start from scratch.

I left SetCPU alone (I was afraid I'd have to pay for it again, I've never uninstalled/reinstalled paid apps before). I rebooted the phone to get to that menu where I could pick Fresh zip. After that installed I reinstalled the Gumbo app. No new backup, no nothing. I just rebooted the phone. When I opened SetCPU it asked me for permission. In fact, a couple of my apps are now asking me for permissions they never did before.

I made a new nandroid backup after everything was working again

Perfect...exact same issues I have been having to a "T". I have yet to be asked permission for anything, I guess my SU doesn't respect me. Hope it works for me, thanks.

Nailed It! Re-flashing Fresh and Gumbo kernel worked. The issue was SU permissions, for some reason when SetCPU was installed it didn't ask for SU permissions. After re-flashing Fresh, I was asked and now it works. Thanks!

Ok I know theres a thousand posts on how to root, but theres too many and I dont actually know whats the best choice. I heard of fresh pre kitchen butit sounds too good to be true, one click rooting. And I also would like to know the best ROM cause theres like too many to choose from and Im new to all this. I know this is alot but I finally decided to root and reeeeally dont want o mess anything up
Thanks.
No, this is installing a new kernel, not rooting, you must be rooted first to install a new kernel.

Start here. Use Fresh 1.1. Then come back and read the Gumbo conversation. I did and my phone is wicked fast now, thanks to these two threads. Good luck!
