Want a boost in performance? Gumbo custom kernel!

Ok I need a hand, I've tried to let it be but I can no longer take it. The Hero is a really good phone but it leaves me wanting more. I rooted my phone I opted for no ROM cause I prefer the stock one and I installed the kernal, BUT the first time I installed it it froze on the HTC screen because I forgot to install the other .zip file. I went ahead and did the nandroid backup from when I rooted, installed the other .zip file, than reinstalled the kernal, and downloaded overclock widget but nothing changed. I reinstalled the kernal but STILL nothing! I tried to let it go but I WANT A FAST PHONE! What am I missing?

I would flash fresh 1.1, I believe there is a theme called defresh that takes it back to the stock theme, but with fresh 1.1 ROM. You should notice a speed improvement from that alone then install the Gumbo kernal and setCPU.

I will look into that, thanks. I wasn't aware there was other themes cause the appearance was what kept me from flashing any roms.

OK. I just installed fresh 1.1 and didnt really notice a difference (havent tested battery life yet) What does Gumbo add to fresh 1.1? are there any root-only apps or themes? I cant find anything but tutorials.
Thanks

Gumbo improves on the Fresh ROM. It speeds things up noticeably. With SetCPU (app in the market), you can also improve how your phone manages it's CPU resource, by selecting when it throttles up and down.

There's some root-only apps like Wireless Tether. If you search the market for "root" you'll find some

Gumbo is WELL worth it. Make sure you restart at least once after you install. I didn't notice the speed increase until I rebooted for the first time.

Also, check out this thread at XDA for themes. Hero Mods, Themes, APK's, Fonts, Lockscreens, Taskbars - xda-developers

Just one thing. How exactly do you install gumbo? none of the guides are 100% clear

If you are rooted...

Download gumbo kernel zip file HERE

Place gumbo kernel zip file in main sd card directory(not a sub-folder)

Turn phone off

Hold down Home button while you press Power to turn the phone back on

Phone will boot into recovery menu

Select Apply sdcard update.zip

Browse to gumbo kernel zip file and select it

wait....

reboot your phone one more time and enjoy!

Dont you have to make sure that you have busybox or a rom (fresh, modaco) installed first or the gumbo kernel will do nothing on a rooted phone?

I believe the kernel will speed things up even if you haven't installed a custom ROM. Feel free to search that xda forum post I linked to. I think it's discussed in there.

If you want to install a custom ROM though, it is a good idea to do that before you install gumbo kernel.

Yep, should work beautifully. I'm running Fresh 1.1 and gumbo kernel and it's great. I'm also running setcpu and seem to be getting slightly better battery life now as well.

This true, you must have the busybox zip installed on the stock rom before installing the Gumbo kernel. (custom roms already include busybox).

Okay so I just installed the kernel and it seems to be working great. As for SetCPU, it sounds interesting and like something I want to add as well, but I'm just wondering if messing with the CPU speed will change the speed at which I receive texts and the like, since I really hate it when I dont receive texts till much after they're sent.

Wont have an effect on the timing of when the server sends you the text messages.

Does anyone know if the Gumbo Kernel works with ASOP 1.6? I'm definitely missing that speed increase after switching from FRESH.

OK i've installed fresh rom 1.1 than the kernal than setcpu.I also uninstalled some stock bloatware BUT my phone is acting real sluggish and my memory went DOWN to 40mbs!What's the deal hear?I think i'm destined to be doomed with this phone...

Have you done a soft reboot since installing Gumbo? (I assume you installed Gumbo). Hold down Menu+Phone and then Power to do a reboot. Give the new kernel a chance to optimize your system. You may even need to reboot twice.

Here is a recount of what I have done to my Hero so far...
rooted,installed kernal(phone froze),nandroid backup,installed busy-box,reinstalled kernal,dled overclock(noticed difference in memory but not speed),dled and installed fresh 1.1 rom,re-downloaded kernal again,dled setcpu,installed defresh,removed some stock sprint (cr)apps,changed boot screen and task bar. I have a 30-40mb decrease in internal memory and no speed increase...what did i do wrong?
