Root want to make backup before rooting

I'm at the point where I want to root my LG Optimus V by followuing the directions in the Rooting Without A Computer thread in this forum.

However, because I can't afford a $150 screwup, I want to make a backup of what's on the phone now so I can hopefully restore it later.

What's the best way of doing that? I looked at Titanium Backup but it wants you to have root BEFORE you use it. I want to back up before I get root.

Try using this method to install a custom recovery found here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...el-rom-change-boot-animation.html#post3000366 .It will not harm your phone, and the temporary root will go away on the next reboot. Then once you have installed the recovery scroll down(in the recovery mode) to the backup and restore option select it. Make a backup of your system(this backup will be stored onto your SD card. then reboot. Then use the Root without a computer method. I will keep an eye out for any question you might have about installing a recovery in the above directed link. EDIT: If you don't have a computer then you will need to set up a dropbox account to save everthing. Unfortunately I don't know how to do that. Hopefully a member with experience with doing that will read this thread and explain how,if thats what you need.

To be able to make a backup, you will have to install a custom recovery. To do that you will have to root. There are threads on returning to stock, just search for them. Be sure you make the backup first thing after installing the recovery. If you want to go back to stock, just restore that backup and follow the guide for unrooting.

what exactly is a 'recovery,' then? the way it's being used here and in other similar forums is not congruent with my knowledge of the term.

If you shut your phone off, then at the same time press and hold the home, volume down and power buttons. Keep holding them until the 'lg' logo disappears. The screen will go black then 4 options will appear. What you are in now is the recovery. This recovery will not let you back up. You need a custom recovery in order to do that. If you look at the how to AndyOpie posted to you, here, if you follow steps 1 thru 15 using ROMTools, you'll have a recovery with 8 options that will allow you to backup your phone. :)

A recovery allows you to recover your system back to a previous state,ie..before you accidentally deleted a system folder or system app which makes you system behave poorly or erratically. It will also allow you to install a custom Kernel, custom ROM,change your boot animation, and change your theme as well. Go all the way to step 15 EDIT: and what yogi-4 said, and remember ROMTools will only establish a temporary Root which will go away at the first reboot. DO NOT HIT THE ROOT BUTTON, hit the Shell Root Button instead. The Root button will not work properly for the Optimus "V". When your done installing the recovery and backing up your system go here and only do the Rooting and installing Busybox portion as you will have already installed a recovery http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/380801-guide-rooting-without-computer.html#post2985787

BusyBox is a collection of tools your phone uses when rooted in order to perform the low-level functions necessary for various tasks.

heh, thanks. I read elsewhere (in a thread for a different phone) that the BusyBox Installer is not needed, once it's done its thing. True?

Quick question.. I've backed up my current system and was just wondering.. where do the files go for the backup in my SD card? Does it become an image file saved somewhere? Or are they a bunch of files scattered throughout my SD card? If I wanted to format my SD card, which files should I save for safekeeping of my backup?

You will find your backed up ROM's in a file folder titled: "clockworkmod" on your SD card. Backed up apps on "Titanium Backup" are in a folder titled: "TitaniumBackup". Music and audio are in "Music". If you want my opinion make a folder on your PC entitled phone or Android Device, etc.,and put all the files in it from your SD card, that way you will have every thing that you started with.

True. You also don't need the Gingerbreak .apk that is on your phones system(I saved the on on the SD card in case for some odd reason I needed to return to stock un-rooted) Have you installed a custom ROM yet? If so what did you choose?

No, I haven't installed a ROM yet. The array of choices seems somewhat bewildering, and I haven't had time to figure out which one I want to start with. I know earlier in this thread -- or maybe a different one -- you posted a few places I could start. Thanks for that :)

Right now my main phone priority is to get the Swype beta installed -- well, it is installed already; I want it in the damn system partition so that it's not taking up 8+megs of my user space. I posted on that subject in a different thread.

JerryScript might be able to help you get swype beta on your system partition(just click on his name in one of his posts and select the option to send him a private message. Explain in detail what you want to do. I'm sure he will get back to you first chance he gets). Some apps don't work if you put them on the SD card, do not be surprised if they don't work. Some apps seem to work right at first ,then start behaving erratically. If this happens just move them back to the phone. A good one to start with is the Harmonia 1.3(it has the most amount of app space of any ROM for the "V". This might solve your app space problem. Go here to download [ROM] Harmonia 1.3.1 (Aphrodite+Picasticks) 16July11 (2.2 bits!) - Android Forums It also has a patch that has the new market in it. It isn't categorized hardly at all, which makes finding apps that do a certain thing way harder. It seems like they took them all and thoroughly mixed them up. Also go here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...el-rom-change-boot-animation.html#post3000366 ,and start on step #14(I can't remember if you made a backup yet or not). This will guide you through the steps to installing your First ROM. You can refer back to this post if your memory is like mine. Also if you have any Questions about the procedure you can ask them right there. Hope this is of some help.

i read some of the information on Harmonia, and it seems as if the reason it has all the extra space is that it doesn't install a lot of stuff (like google apps). Can you comment on that? I know the thread you posted for me includes instructions on how to re-download (and presumably reinstall) the google apps, but ...

also, can you comment on the BackSide Gingerbread ROM you're using vs. the Harmonia one I'm looking at installing? Thanks :)

Hello
Let me jump in here. I've been using Harmonia for a month or two. Yes it saves a lot of space because a lot of the extra things are left out. It works fine as packaged but allows for personal customization. The good thing is that many of the things left out of the ROM can be added to the system files (rather than an app) and will take up much less space. If a system file doesn't exist you can make one yourself or if you are unable to do that then just download the app from the market. Harmonia is stable, fast and still very well supported. I'm not degrading other ROMS but just giving my opinion of the one I have the most experience with.
Just have fun experimenting with all the different ROMs out there. All of them are far far better than the one VM shipped on the Optimus V.

Timm129 nailed your first question. As far as your second question. I can't even begin to describe how much more you can customize the performance of this ROM(all added in) I can safely overclock to 787Hz and still run cool, and still have better battery off charge times(22 to 28 hours). At that CPU speed Angry Birds is so smooth and fast you would swear you were playing it on a I Phone. There constantly improving it(got a update today)there is only a few minor bugs left that there working on getting rid of(all the major things work).I could go on and on. You have xionia recovery right? Just remember a really good rule of thumb: Froyo based ROM's=Xionia_cwma_12518.4;Gingerbread based ROM's=ClockWorkMod v3.2.0.1...If you want to flash CWMod 3.2.0.1 you can find it in the newest ROM manager v4.3.2.4.... Got to get some sleep.

EDIT: LeslieAnn has updated Harmonia(Harmonia v1.5) to allow it to be installed using the CWM recovery's as well.

??? I used Gingerbreak (without a computer) and it did a "ClockworkMod" recovery.img. Does that mean I need to use a Gingerbread ROM? I was going to try Harmonia. What is your preference?

Try Harmonia 1.5, Leslieann changed the scripting so it would work with the cwm recoveries.

I JUST installed Harmonia 1.3. What's new in 1.5, and should I go ahead and install that instead?

Based on Titanium Backup's performance with the Restore, I'm not sure I want to do this that often. Backing up is quick and easy -- Restoring not so much.

You can restore a backup quicker than you can change a baby's diaper.

so i wouldn't get any benefit from upgrading -- especially as I use xionia recovery. Right. Thanks
It doesn't hurt to have two recovery's on your sd card. Xionia doesn't seem to wipe well enough on the new IHO-CM7(Gingerbread) ROM's. If you decide to Upgrade to an IHO-CM7 ROM then you will need a CWM recovery. Keep xionia on the sd card as it has an option to fix recovery loop in the advanced section.
