Root WARNING: before you flash your radios, read this thread!!!!

Thank you OCNBRZ

I found the file but the rsa key checker app says I don't have my keys or it couldn't find them. I use Amon Ra 2.3 and have always backed up my wimax....BUTTTT I wonder if when i flashed a radio combo back in Nov/Dec if i din't already lose them and now I'm basically backing up nothing. Could that be it?

Charles

that is possible. when flashing radio combos there is always that possibity. that is why i have one nandroid with wimax on my computer and in my dropbox just in case.

what should it have inside the wimax file. i tried to open but i don't know which choice to use. by the way in terminal emulator when i typed wimax_mtd it came back

wimax partition....ok
get htc wimax tag....ok
verify wimax tag (htc-wimax-sqn1130)....pass
read wimax partition....ok
check firmware version(4.6.2.3v27167_).....4.6.2.3v27167_
check firmware file.....Match

so do i have wimax or no??? So confused:confused:

you just want the wimax.img file nothing else.
and in terminal emulator type: "grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0" (no quotes).
if you get this"-----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----
-----END RSA PRIVATE KEY-----" then you have your wimax keys.

not good I guess?

So what is it about flashing the new radios that makes you lose your wimax? Does it only happen if you flash the updated wimax radio?

not sure it is just one of those things that can happen. most of the time from what i have seen is that through many times flashing it can get lost with you not even knowing it. i have seen it like in this case where just on a whim wimax keys were checked and lo and behold they are gone. i don't think that it is just wimax radios. just make sure that you have them backed up and you should be fine. i have at least one on my computer and one in my dropbox.

ok so i rememnber reading awhile back that someone lost there wimax key but was able to get it back. you need another wimax key to do this, but here is the thread:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ved-missing-wimax-keys-update-first-post.html.

Not sure his phone ever fully functioned on 4g after. He did get the keys installed and it found them. He bought a junker and grabbed its keys. There was still an issue though I recall our it would have been huge news :)

Hi evomattnc,

Hi pmd ocnbrz about the same discovery. I found a wimax image on a back up of 11/2010 I still am not for sure if I flashed radios prior to then but anywho how can I check to see if this image has the keys I need? It is currently on my laptop. Is there an easy way to check before I move it to the phone?

THANK YOU and OCNBRZ and all here for their time.

Oh I forgot I may have been on CWM when I made this back up...don't recall sorry.

Charles

ok so this is not from me but here you go:
"First, I apologize if I post this in the wrong forum. Mods please move it for me =D thank you.

Second, I just went through hell to have my RSA key restore and I thought I have to post this instruction right the way in hope of it will save the next person.

For some reason my RSA key were missing and I have no idea why or how. But I did backup my RSA key using RA_Recovery a while ago so this instruction is only good if you did so.

Requirements:
-Root explorer Pro (paid)
-Terminal Emulator (free)

Instructions:
1. Assume you backed up your RSA key and have wimax.img file somewhere
2. Use Root Explorer Pro to copy and paste it to your root SD folder "sdcard"
3. Download "flash_image.zip" file from here: Flash image - CyanogenMod Wiki
4. Use Root Explorer Pro to extract it to your root SD folder "sdcard"
5. Then copy flash_image file itself and paste to /system/bin (you change it from R/O (Read Only) to R/W (Read Write), paste the files, then change it back it R/O.
6. Open Terminal Emulator
7. Type su
8. type flash_image wimax /sdcard/wimax.img it will reflash the rsa image key to your phone
9. Download Wimax key check from Market to verify. It should now says your key is present!

Good luck!!!"

hope that helps. here is the link again:[HowTo] restore RSA key using Terminal Emulator - xda-developers

First things First: Thank you one and all!

ocnbrze, evomattnc, all of the mods and members. You guys help people you don't know EVERYDAY, amazing! Android Forums is one place I can go and have no fear of "FLAME ON"! Unless I deserve it:D. Seriously XDA is great but I mostly look, occassionally post, but for the most part I'm a noob. I know enough to get myself in trouble...see previous post in this thread!:D I found an old back up and took a chance using the instructions above. Kinda surprised it worked but I guess that last time I did the most recent radio updates I must have lost my keys. Well then I make wimax backups of missing keys and delete my old nandroids as I go. Got lucky I had an old back up and the folks here at AF! The funny thing is I don't have 4g probably not for years to come. I just wanted to be able to sell my phone with it's original functionality. Thanks again everyone.

Sincerely,

Charles

Crap, sorry charlie :) I went to grab a link for you and answer your question earlier today and completely got distracted...glad you got it.

Got a new furry kid today, great dane, 12 weeks, 35 pounds. Stoked!

damn!!!!!!!!!that is not a dog, that is a horse!! you are going to need a stable, once that fella grows up!

first off welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so here is where you can get the radios: [ Radios ][ 6-3 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers. you just flash those as you would a rom. i believe that the radio for 2.2 is 2.15.00.11.19. you can follow the instructions in the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html the instructions are found in the UPDATING TO THE LATEST OTA (Over-The-Air Update) section.

I have another question, In the instructions it says: "If there are stability issues, downgrade all, make sure everything is back to normal, then flash each one (Baseband, WiMAC, NV, PRI) one at a time to see which one causes instability."

On the page, all four of those are listed, but additionally there is a "Hboot" (radio?) listed? Is that another individual radio I should flash?

Do the individual radios need to be flashed via the Hboot method, or the normal method?

either way is fine. with the hboot method, the file needs to be named correctly or it will not work. it needs to be PC36IMG with no extra .zip's added as windows hides extensions. so that is up to you. for me i just flashed the new radio combo found in the link that i provided.

Guys many things. I ended up rolling back to EVO_Radio_2.15.00.11.19, and my 4G works again (ya!). My wifi reception is still not as strong as it use to be (prior to flashing the radios in the first place). Is the WiFi radio part of the main radio file? I recognize that WiMax is 4G, but wasn't sure what PRI and NV were for.

As always thank you.

If I want to rollback my radio set up, I'd have to flash each component (pri, nv, wimax, etc..) seprately? It seems that would be they way. I updated my radios playing with 2.3 and 3g is slower and my connection has dropped allot. I talked to sprint and I'm damn near "sitting" on a tower. I thought I'd go to my backup, but the radio didn't change that I could see. On ra, and I can say I backup everything but the 2 bottom most options. Soooo, can i just try flashing back to what I had using the zips from xda, is there a half-assed chance I could get my speeds back?

Other than not being able to tether like I can on 2.2 I liked 2.3 seemed faster overall,
( apart from the 3g that is)

yes you could roll back the radios if you like. just make sure that you have at least one backup with your wimax key backed up. you could loose your wimax key by messing around with your radios.

Lol, after reading this checking my keys was the first thing I did. Though I did notice in the gb update thread that they had a kernel with wireless - n working. Dont know if that would help or not  anything that would get my speeds back to where they were would be great. At the moment I'm running the newest radios with koni's elite 3, and a 4.3.4 netarchy kernel. Any idea/thoughts ya'll may have on the issues would be great. Speeds were kicking ass (well at least usable if nothing else :D
