Root What does wiping cache and dalvik cache do?

How would one go about doing this?

Charge phone to full 100%(do not unplug)
Boot to recovery and wipe battery stats
Reboot phone
Unplug phone from charger
Drain phone completely till the phone turns off, 0%
Plug phone back into charger and recharge to 100%( do not unplug till 100%)

I turned off my phone, turned it back on while holding the volume down, nothing happened. It just started as normal. What am I doing wrong?

Did you press the volume down button first and continue to hold it while pressing the power button?

Yes, I pressed the volume button down, the part that would make the volume decrease, pressed and held the power button down too. l held them both down until the phone started up.

had "read only" error wit radio rip/spartacus rex (awesome streaming recorder btw) and when trying to download in net browser, even tho astro would still (mostly) see card and access files.

error check didn't fix it.

successfully fixed it by wiping cache/dalvik cache!

Thanks for all those who've added to the documentation of errors and fixes; I'm using rooted Evo via unrevoked3 and stock ui.

I find it handy to use Terminal Emulator to go to recovery. Make sure you grant su permissions when you first open it after installing (it is available in the Market if it does not already come with your custom ROM). Then, type "reboot recovery " and press the enter button on the keyboard. I also use TE to reboot by just typing "reboot system."

I use Quick Boot. I keep it on my app bar and use it to Reboot, boot into Recovery or Bootloader, or Power Off the phone. It is a lot faster than holding down keys.

BTW, this thread is amazing, Lots of information that has helped me make my phone run more efficiently. Thanks! Now, if I could find easy instructions to get my rooted Evo from 2.1 to 2.2 I would be in heaven!

Go to the link in my sig called roms and kernels dl. Basically you will want to flash the file to update your radios, wimax, nv, and pri to the lastest and then flash a rom that is of the latest software you can find it all there. We actually have roms out running 2.3.4, heck i even flashed an experimantal android 3.0 honeycomb last week. You could also just flash sprint lovers rom on that page and it will update all of that for you and then you can flash whatever rom you like from there...I usually consider that the safer route...

EDIT: MAKE A NANDROID BACK UP FIRST!

About the wiping battery stats.....I believe you are supposed to let you battery completely drain to the point where it doesn't even turn on anymore, then plug in and go into recovery and wipe stats then fully charge. I believe that was the explaination cyn devs have on their wiki paige.

evomattnc, I cannot say thank you enough. I had not heard of the Sprint Lovers Rom prior to following your link. It was painless to install and I would not have found it without your prompt and accurate help! I was considering a new phone but once again, I love my Evo and will stick with it for a while longer!

Hey not a problem friend. Glad we got you loving your amazing evo again. It really is a great phone. There are a lot of good roms out there for 2.2, 2.3.3, and 2.3.4. Check them out and if you ever need any help flashing one or with anything in general don't hesitate to ask. Enjoy

This thread has advice to fully charge before wiping battery stats, and to fully deplete before doing it.

Does anyone have a link to more conclusive instructions and rationale?

Thanks!

Just my 2 cents... As far as wiping battery stats I run a program called battery calibration tool (free in market)... It gives you instructions on how to charge/deplete and wipe battery stats. I run the program after every flash/nand restore and have noticed significant positive change in battery life. Basically charge til 100%, wipe the stats, deplete to 0%, then recharge uninterrupted to 100%.

Jmo, hope it helps

I just read your title...:o

Wiping dalvik cache and cache won't wipe data but that's not a full wipe.
