It's just 'branding', not 'brand whoring'. It's been around since business itself. And it certainly isn't a bad thing, if you're into making money and all.
Once the majority of people recognize your brand, you're in. Quick, anyone know how to easily spot a pair of Levi's? Can you eyeball a McDonalds from down the road? The red sports car in front of you has a dancing horse badge on it, do you know what it stands for? Does anyone besides me know that an 'O' on the frame of someone's sunglasses means they're Oakleys?
Those are all brand trade marks.. When a company us easily recognizable, it helps sales dramatically. You can love or hate any of those companies, it doesn't matter. What matters is that they succeeded in business. And the way you know they succeeded is because you recognize their logo. I'd say the robot is pretty well known now-a-days. They aren't on our phones, but it's still the Android logo. If anyone here had created a logo that even 1/10th of the population instantly recognized, you'd be freakin rich!
I always thought iPod commercials were pretty catchy, still I've never owned one. But I will shamefully admit that when Motorola released the first few commercials for the Droid... you know, the one's where the robot arm was playing with the Droid in the hyperbolic chamber, and then the phone exploded with all the apps it had... man I thought those commercials were bad-ass. I wouldn't say I bought my DX because of those commercials, but they didn't hurt. I certainly had a certain image of Motorola Droids before I bought mine, and that image was a positive one.
Mission accomplished Moto.
