What's the scariest movie of all time?

I retract all my previous statements in this thread as of right now!

Insidious is the scariest movie of all time! Ok, maybe not all time, but it was a scary movie!

One of the best on my all time list is Event Horizon. Man, it makes you think and still gives me the creeps everytime I watch it. Close second would be What Lies Beneath.
 
Definitely not for everyone (or ANYONE), but I just finished watching A Serbian Film. Please do not watch it. I'm feeling really disturbed now...
 
If you want to consider what was the scariest for its time, then I would have to go with "Psycho" (the original Hitchcock version).

Think about how it must impacted the folks who saw it when it originally came out on the big screen - all the hype about not letting anyone in after it started, killing off the lead actress a third of the way into the movie, the shower murder scene with its memorable score - nothing like this had ever been done before.

Even today I think it holds up pretty well. The dreary scenery and B&W photography, the cop following her for no apparent reason, the gothic house on the hilltop, it all has a very creepy suspenseful feel, even though I've seen it numerous times and know exactly what's coming.

For me it's The Killers starring Ashton Kutcher. After seeing it I was left with a deep sense of hopelessness and existential dread.

No, I'm serious. That movie ****ed me up. It was so bad that I thought "This isn't really happening." But it was happening. I mean, people paid money to watch that piece of shit. What's worse, I was one of them (not by choice though).

Imagine you went to a recommended restaurant and you were served a hot turd by a waiter that smiled as he put it in front of you. Then he pours you a large glass of horse piss. The important thing is to think of this ACTUALLY happening because that's what happened to me in terms of film.

When the movie was over everyone just walked out like nothing went amiss which frightened me even more. It was like living a little piece of "Brave New World" in real life.

It was a very dark day for me.
 
I dont find movies scary so much as jumpy. However, one film that did leave me slightly scarred (from being slightly scared) for a few nights, was "Fallen". It just kind of left me wondering. Its not really a scary movie at all, but it did have a profound affect on me at the time.

Also "Eden Lake". If you live in the UK, its too close to reality...

I agree Eden Lake was really good. I like the ones that feel like they could really happen like that. Besides, what's scarier than a bunch of punk teenagers? Lol
 
I'm sorry to say that I do not remember the name of the movie, I watched it on TV a couple of years ago. It was a "based on a true story"-thing about a serial killer.

What really freaked me out was the documentary style of it: there was no sound track, just the ambient sound. You never knew when something was gonna happen! Stressed me out!
 
I'm not sure I can say any movie really scared me, and I was a big horror movie buff as a kid. But it's very possible that It and Killer Klowns from Outer Space has lead to my displeasure with clowns. That and my allergy to makeup and face paint that was discovered when my mom tried to make me a clown one Halloween.

Oh yeah, Fire in the Sky kinda creeped me out a bit.
 
I have to go with the consensus on The Exorcist. Years ago one Halloween night it was on a Spanish speaking tv channel and, even though I couldn't understand a word of it, it still managed to freak me out.

I thought The Grudge was a pretty scary flick. It doesn't really have the staying power of a good scary movie after repeated viewings but it held in there the first few times I saw it.

The first time I saw the movie Dolls as a child it creeped the hell out of me. After seeing that, my class took a field trip to The Field Museum in Chicago and there's a big display of antique porcelain dolls. I remember it was a wide, straight hallway and I could not get to the end of it quick enough. Watching it now I think to myself, geez that's some pretty mediocre stop motion animation.

I felt the same way after watching Martyrs.
 
i get a lot of raised eyebrows for this one, but for me, it's paranormal activities. the end scared the heck out of me. it was a real slow movie, but they filmed it like it was so real. i actually heard the two actors got the gig form a craigslist posting.
 
I should probably hit myself for recommending this, but if you really want to see the most disturbing, horrific film you'll ever see. Watch A Serbian Film. Although, if you are squeamish or easily perturbed don't even watch the trailer.

I know quite a few people that can't get through the whole movie, or refuse to watch it. Some consider it a masterpiece, and others consider it the worst movie of all time.
