What's your favorite MLB team?

It's a better outfield than Ellsbury and retreads.
Oof, agreed. I don't know what you guys were thinking with that Gomes signing, he's an awful defender. Plus, he can hit lefties, which is great, but he can't hit righties at all. He's basically a $5 million/year part-time player. Interesting article from Fangraphs on the situation, recommended:

Red Sox Replace Carl Crawford with Polar Opposite | FanGraphs Baseball

Btw, more good news for the Yanks - FOX reports that Mariano Rivera may sign within the week.

EDIT: Cascade effect here - news is leaking in that Ichiro may have already re-signed as well. Preliminary report says one-year contract worth $5M plus incentives. Waiting for more details.

Quite honestly I was impressed with how Pettitte pitched last year. I think I remember Hitman and I discussing it earlier in this thread.

Totally agreed, especially after taking a whole year off. He was just what the Yanks needed, and hopefully this season will be a similar level.

Tweets from CBS and New York Post are saying that it's a one year deal between $10-11 million for Pettitte. Really glad to get this worked out, now we can move on to re-signing Ichiro, Ibanez, and maybe Martin. I'm not super thrilled at having Ichiro for another year, because I don't think we'll get the same rejuvenated numbers out of him for an entire season, but I was honored that he publicly said he wants to play for the Yankees again. A healthy Gardner, Granderson, and Ichiro is still a pretty darn good 2013 OF.

Pettitte is a god amongst men. However, that may be my bias due to him being my favorite player of all-time. As for the NYY OF, I would love to have Ichiro back. I don't believe we'll ever see the guy who set the record for 262 hits in a single season again, but he's still very agile for a guy his age, which makes his defensive abilities better than anything we'd put out there otherwise. As for his bat, his speed makes up for the fact that he can't slap balls into the gaps anymore, so infield hits it is!

Honestly, I can't wait to get rid of Granderson. I don't care that he hits 35-40 HR's a season and drives in 95+ runs. The man is useless when it counts, and his defense has slid back a bit since we got him from Detroit.

Gomes signing was awful. No clue what Cherington was thinking. Perhaps he thinks he's the next Billy Beane. Mo will be back without a doubt. He already said that he refuses to go out like a chump. The best relief pitcher of all-time will come back with a vengeance, guaranteed.

With all due respect, can we keep the juvenile nicknames out of this thread? "Red Sux" is about as funny as "Spankmees" or "Stankees" or any other of the super clever permutations I've heard on the Internet. Let's keep it civil, eh?

Pretty certain I never intended for it to be funny. Lol, Pup knows the deal already. There can be no such civility when a Yankees fan and Red Sox fan are involved in a conversation! /sarcasm

Pettitte deal finalized yesterday :) It's a one-year deal worth $12M plus another $2.5M in award-based bonuses. Sounding very good to me. I expect a Mo signing soon.

May be a slight overpay, but I like the deal. Congrats to the Yankees. Since the Sox don't have a realistic chance at a title this year (IMO) I'm actually pulling for Jeter, Mo, and Pettite to go out on top as this is very likely their last year together.

It is definitely cool to think that we got the three core guys back to all have one last blaze of glory together. :) Hopefully we'll have enough prospects and young guys ready for the old guard to step down and let the new take over after '13.

Ehhh, I don't know bro. Yankees future is looking pretty depressing once the '14 season begins. However, I do have my sights set on a few guys who I think can really contribute. Those few are Ronnier Mustelier, Mark Montgomery, and Vidal Nuno.

Hmm, hadn't heard of Nuno before, he's an interesting case. I like Mustelier and Montgomery a lot, I think we'll definitely see Montgomery this year. The Yanks have a number of intriguing guys that we could see in '14: Slade Heathcott, Nik Turley, Zach Nuding, to name a few.

In order to get under the $189 million mark with guys like A-Rod and Tex and CC already on the payroll, we're going to have to do a better job of mixing in young guys and spending intelligently.

At least CC is putting in work though. A-Rod and Tex just seem like money poorly spent. I forgot about Slade. I like him too. Back to Montgomery, he reminds me of Robertson, but with a bit more zip. I also Sanchez wasn't such a headache. He could be a really great damn catcher for us.

At least Tex is still an elite defender, a perennial Gold Glover. His bat aptitude is slipping, but I think we can put it on the shoulders of Kevin Long - he's all about pulling the ball for power, and Tex has just been way too excited about the short right field porch. I don't think it's irreversible though.

Montgomery gets comps to Robertson all the time, and I definitely see it. I suspect he'll be similarly successful too; very similar strikeout rates to what D-Rob posted in the minors.

Finally, let's not forget the big news - Mo's back! One year, $10 million plus incentives. However, Russell Martin will be departing, as he signed a two year deal with Pittsburgh. Notice my tears. While I never hated Martin and thought he handled the pitching staff and defended very well, he definitely underperformed overall. Not sure what we're going to do now that he's gone, though. A tandem of Frankie Cervelli and Austin Romine makes me nervous.

In other New York news, the Mets signed David Wright to a seven-year, $122 million extension. If Wright's already-exercised 2013 club option is included, it's an eight-year, $138 million deal, which surpasses Johan Santana's $137.5 million contract as the largest in Mets history. Pretty huge.

Johan should have never got that deal to begin with, but that's neither here nor there. David deserves that contract even if I'm against anything longer than 5 years.

Agreed, he's a standup guy with great character, and he made it plain that he loves the Mets and wanted to stay with them. He'll still be in his prime to late prime years when the Mets are getting ready to contend again, so I think it was a good signing on the part of the Mets.

So the Winter Meetings start today, this is my favorite part of the offseason. I suspect we'll see at least one or two large trades, as well as have a couple big free agents sign, like Greinke and Hamilton. Strongly recommend following MLB Trade Rumors for up-to-the-minute info.

Some bad news out of Yankees camp today: A-Rod's hip is injured again, he'll need another surgery and will miss part of 2013. Turns out he'd been playing with the hip injury for most of 2012, New York Post thinks it could be part of why he looked so bad at the plate.

ESPN postulates that A-Rod's injury will cause the Yanks to step up the search for infield help, ie. Stephen Drew, Jeff Keppinger, Eric Chavez, Marco Scutaro, Casey McGehee, Chone Figgins, etc.

EDIT: Fox Sports thinks we may see the Padres selling high on Chase Headley and swapping him to the Yanks during the Winter Meetings.

EDIT2: It's A-Rod's left hip, not his previously-repaired right hip. Not sure if that makes it better or worse.

Wow, no one posting? XD Anyone got thoughts on their team's moves (or lack of moves) at the Winter Meetings?

Cashman's lack of moves, plus the Steinbrenner's sudden desire to be cheap bastards has got me in quite the awful mood. I'm beyond baffled that they did not even offer Martin a deal. The same goes for Ichiro.

As for A-Rod's injury, we have in-house (and inexpensive) options like Adams or Mustelier, but they just offered Youkilis $12M on a one year deal. Honestly, I don't know how I feel about having him as a Yankee.

Well I thought it would be weird seeing Ichiro in a different jersey, but it worked out just fine. :D

EDIT: Youkilis update

Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN
Kevin Youkilis's decision is, at heart, a choice between playing for Cleveland/Francona at 2/18 or playing for the Yankees at 1 for $12m
