Root Which Kernel to download? Tiamat on Evo

First are you on an AOSP ROM? Do not mix Kernels. Sense Kernels are made for sense ROM's AOSP kernels are made for AOSP ROMS.

If you're on an AOSP rom (cyanogenmod7, deck, miui etc) then the best Tiamat kernel is 3.3.7. You can get it in SBC or non SBC form on the website. You're probably asking yourself "since there is a newer version out, isn't that better?". Not in my opinion, or really anybody's opinion on XDA. Tiamat 3.3.7 is a great kernel.

+1

Good call on 3.3.7

I've noticed that my battery will drain at a -20 or so ma level with Tiamat 3.3.7 when it's sleeping (per battery monitor widget). Nothing else really comes close to that for me except maybe Lithid's freedom kernel, which I normally run with MikG, but still, Tiamat doesn't drain so fast with the screen on.

weirdly enough, the kernel that works best for an Evo running any rom varies from build to build... i know people that have run the EXACT same setup as me and have experienced horrible battery life and vice versa. Thsi is where some more trial and error come in to play. SBC runs the risk of whats called "plating" to occur in your battery, which can drastically shorten its lifespan. This could happen, however ive never seen any posts from people where it actually has. I run 4.0.4 sbc+ and it rucks this thing! Anyways, I say try em out for a day or 2 each to let them settle and decide for yourself :D

Frenchy - do you run SBC kernels? I've read a lot about the concerns and based on all the user feedback I've ever seen, it doesn't seem to do much harm. Even if it degrades the battery, if it does so over a 2 or 3 year period, the average user will probably never notice because you probably won't even use the phone that long.

i have been using sbc kernels for awhile now and i have not seen or heard of exploding phones or even just damaged batteries.

this is the best thread that talks about sbc:

read novox77's post #18.

I personally don't use SBC Kernels. When I did run them, my battery would stay at 100% substantially longer but overall my battery would drain quicker than when I wasn't running it.

I don't see too much harm in them and I see plenty of forum members completely happy w/ them, BUT I also don't dismiss Ziggy's feelings on them.

My overall thoughts are if you're happy w/ them and your Evo benefits from using an SBC Kernel, run it, if not, don't.

Wow, I wouldn't want to burn my house down over a stupid cell phone, that for sure!

yeah but that is the only case of that i have heard of a battery exploding. and who knows what batteries these exploding phones were using, how old, and what kernel they had on the phone. these are all extreme cases. i have been on sbc for a while now and i will continue to do so as long as they are made.

here is a great debate over sbc, back when it first came out. great info there;

Thanks guys, I was going to run CM7 and my Evo is a hardware version 004.

I'll check out version 3.3.7.

I actually just flashed tiamat 3.3.7 non SBC. But mainly because I've been on non SBC sense kernels lately and I want an apples to apples comparison
