I am sure this has been asked a hundred times but, I am leaning towards rooting my phone and was wondering if I could get a poll of which rom is the best to go with

i would highly recommend apex 1.3.1 for it stability and perfect balance of blur and no blur:D

Yes, this question has been asked many times. ;)

And you're going to get the full gamut of recommendations, I can assure you.

Do you want a Blurless rom, a rom with some Blur, or a pretty much stock rom that is themed?

For your first rom, go Apex. IMO, you do not want Gummy or Liberty unless you have some experience with roms, a backup like Titanium, and know how to use it.

You can flash Apex w/o wiping data.

You don't want to install a rom, have no accounts, no contacts, no backup and not know how to make your phone usable.

  • You need to be rooted.
  • Install Titanium and make your first backup. This is a backup of your apps and data. See Titanium 101.
  • Make a backup of stock from recovery. You'll need that to get the next OTA. A recovery image is a backup of your entire phone & data as it is today.
  • Install Apex, then make backup of that. If you don't like Apex, you can restore your stock backup.
  • Before installing a theme, make another backup. If you don't like it you can reload your backup.
  • Rom Manager is great for managing your backups. You can create, rename and delete them easily.

This is what my backups look like in RM. You do not want to use spaces or ()'s.

I have flashed my DX with ApeX 1.3, ApeX1.3.1, and am currently on DarkSlide v4.2 blur-less. Both of the ApeX have Moto's Blur, but DarkSlide has none at all. No major issues with any of these so far. Tomorrow I'm going to give Liberty a try. Liberty allows you to add in blur components one at a time.

Why I switched? Boredom, I guess. Once the changing ROM bug bites, you gotta scratch it.

I'm going to add my list of recommended apps:

1) ApeX 1.3.1
2) Liberty 1.0
3) Fission
4) RubiX
5) TranQ 3.7.0
6) Chevy Ssx 1.1

We have great roms to choose from and the newest is TranQ 3.7.0. It's great as is Liberty. Enjoy!

another ? is if I dl z4 root when I get to my home pc since it is no longer on the market how do I go about installing it and running it

My personal experience:

1. Apex 1.3.1
2. Liberty
3. Gummy Jar

They are all good, but Apex has better battery life than Liberty so I switched back; although Liberty has more baked-in mods in the toolbox.

Download the Z4 Root app to your sd card. On your phone, go to Menu, Settings, Applications, and enable Installing non Market apps. Also, go to Development in the same Applications menu and turn on usb debugging. Then use Astro or Root Explorer to navigate to the file on your sd card. A pop up window will ask you if you want to open the installer, select this and install the Z4 Root app. Then open the Z4 Root app and select Permanent Root.

thanks... its been a really big help.... should be rooting tuesday morning when I work off graveyard.... hopefelly all will go well

Did you try booting into CWM Recovery and going into Advanced, wiping Battery Stats and Dalvik Cache to get Liberty's battery performance fixed?

Yup. Did that when I installed where batt was fully charged. Liberty doesn't have t-se battery profiles and seems to drain faster regardless of the profiles.

yea Ive noticed liberty has less battery life than apex, but its a little faster..i think its just preferance...and the reason i dont have gummyjar is cuz no swype is in that rom haha...
1)Liberty
2)Apex

Apex #1 just hope fab comes out with an update but I know he's stuntin on the hoes in his new g35. Hoes first roms second lol

Really? On ApeX I had better battery than stock, with heavy use (constant web browsing) I'd get about 3 hours before I was down to 20% and had to charge, with liberty I'm getting over 4 hours. With ApeX overnight while I slept would lose 20% in night time saver mode over 8 hours. Now that I have liberty I can't figure out how to set it to night time saver mode but in the same time period I wake up w 100% (although it doesn't say fully charged on the battery widget)

ApeX is #1 blur Rom, Liberty is #1 blurless rom

ok so bit of a hickup i can find z4 root when i am not plugged into my pc under the file app in the app bin but as soon as i plug it in i cant find anything with astro... so what do i do... isntall it without being hooked up to the pc or what.... need a little more guidence guys... thanks in advance

Unplug from the pc and you should see it. If you can see your card from your pc, usually you can't see it from the phone.

so my next? since tranQ just hit is apex still at the top of the list for a noob starting. out

Honestly? At one point, ApeX was really the only (or one of the few) Roms out there for DX, that were totally newbie friendly. Now? Things are different. I love ApeX 1.3.1 (partly because the dev monitors this forum), but there are several other roms that are just as stable and newbie friendly. Lord knows, I spent the last several months telling newbies to keep with ApeX. That is no longer necessary.

All of the ones in my list are newbie friendly. It is only a matter of taste. Here's some description.

1) Liberty - no blur, but you can add a bit. Stable and configurable. Very nice themes and a LOT of them. I am on it at present. It's very fast because it's sleek.

2) TranQ 3.7.0- (very important to flash this version because I found 3.6.1 unstable)- Very stable. LOTS of configuration changes. You probably can add the most blur into this one. Some themes. I don't like the white (gray?) settings menu, but it is not a deal breaker. This rom puts P3Droid back on top as one of the finest devs for DX.

3) ApeX 1.3.1- Some blur. Very configurable and fast. The developer is here and you can ask him questions. Handsome builds and themes. It's an all around winner. Top developer who puts out creative and stable builds consistently. Probably the top developer for Droid X around.

4) GummyJar- Excellent, fast and good themes. However, if you're gonna flash this, you might as well try Liberty as it is his lastest work together with JRummy (developer) who is known for having fanTAStic system tweaks.

5) Chevy's Ssx 1.1- Stable, nice, nice themes. I flashed it but that was so long ago, I don't really remember it. I think it is also configurable to have some blur. Solid rom.

6) Fission- One of the top. It has a cool Fission Rom Manager from which you can do all your modding. Lots of options with this one. Not much blur. Very fast. One of the top.

This is the best I can do. They are all fine works of software, so I can't make your mind up for you, but I can tell you about them, right?

Steven
