Who is keeping their A500?

I had the waking issue too and even had it with stock level, since reset the device before taking back to Best Buy. The A500 wakes up and goes back to sleep randomly. Not a lot, but enough to notice.... I wonder if this is why some folks are seeing more battery bleed while it is supposed to be asleep. The reason for the bleed may be it is not always asleep for some users....

Oh well, I liked everything about the device except the wifi behaving badly in one and two bar areas. Since it works fine for me in three and four bar areas, seems the wifi power toggle is the likely issue, since it would not be an problem unless in a lower bar signal area. Perhaps an issue with power management in the kernel?

Wish I had the same great wifi as others have reported.

It will definitely be something I watch...but I am not going to hold on to the tablet in the meanwhile...

It am curious to see what the devs cook up/fix in the future.

www.teamviewer.com + A500 = Change res to make fit tab and you have a PC in bed, Lazyman Shitter Reader, or just a remote spay for any oter PC = why I am keeping my a500

Thanks for the info! I had been using Pocket Cloud which worked well enough when I would run to class and forget my flash drive and leave a document on my desktop and email it to myself from campus. Team Viewer runs so much more smoothly!

thanks for quoting him..I actually completely missed it the first time around

After going back to my gTablet and its display, slower system speed and interface, I REALLY, REALLY miss the A500. I will get another one and see if the wifi was a fluke.

Just install Mobo Video Player from Android Market.
It plays all formats without format conversion... similar to VLC

MoboPlayer Website <-- here

cheers :)

Thanks guys, mobo and rock player are a little better, but still pixellated on high res or high bitrate movies.

I'm going to try the "Apple TV" mode in handbrake or see if i can keep the resolution and lower the video bitrate and see if that helps.

I really like the idea of only have one version that plays on my TV (via LG Blu-Ray player) and my tablet (via USB port).

Today's my last day to return it and unfortunately I think I am. Don't get me wrong the tablet is great and I can deal with the bugs, but the locked bootloader is a killer for me. I don't want to be at the mercy of Acer to produce updates. The Acer support seems very weak and I don't feel comfortable knowing there may be no way to update it or put on custom roms.

Ill monitor the progress and if something changes ill buy it again, otherwise interested in what Samsung will offer.

I bought another one to test wifi again. The A500 is built great and the display is sweet, IMO. As mentioned in another thread, the Toshiba is the next best bet for connectivity, but costs more and about four months away.

Not even considering the Archos devices coming about same time, since they never fail to screw something up.

Let us know how the new one works out for you with the wifi. I am hoping it works well for you.

I have had no troubles with my wifi and have been enjoying this device greatly.

Seems better so far, so may have had a wifi issue in the other one. I also moved my router upstairs to a more central location. The negative is my desktop in the basement no longer has a cable directly to the router, but the tradeoff is better signal for all of the house and devices. 80% signal and still great speed with wireless USB on the desk top.

Will update later when more time to play.

BTW, I really like this tablet and think to get the same build, performance and features for the price is very good. People that might read my posts know I can be a mega nitpicker (SOB). This device is one of the better that I have bought in a long time.

As I said before, I returned mine due to lack of support. So I picked up a nook color today and rooted it with CWM and installed CM7 and I must say I am super impressed. If you want a tablet and aren't sold on Acer and HC for that msteer check outthe nook. I'll probably keep this until the next Gen on android tablets come out.

Rush, why don't you just invest in a repeater :) Maybe then that will solve your wifi issues. For me I can't go in the back bedroom and get a great signal. So I boosted using the windsurfer antenna from freeantennas.com.

I just made a small antenna using their configuration and cutouts and it did in fact give me a much better signal in the back. I did of course move the wifi router up as far as I could get it on my desk. It did help improve signals. My laptop in the bedroom has no issues with signal, so I figured that this was an Iconia issue. But as soon as I took a more proactive stance with my signals, I found out I could get a better signal with the Iconia just using some best practices with my Netgear router.

I was going to just get a repeater and be done with it. But I wanted to try out the free options first. I then installed some wifi apps that showed my signal ratios and strengths through the house and this gave me an idea about where exactly I was concerning my power and signals from the router.

So far I am very happy with the Iconia, although I have noted on this forum and others such as XDA that you are not so happy with it due to the wifi issues. My hope is that you won't convince too many people to give it back lol. Its a great device and I am way happy with it. I know updates are just around the corner and am very happy to wait for them. My productivity has increased 100 fold in just having the Iconia.

I was also not willing to wait for the Transformer when I saw that crappy release they pulled in the UK and then in the USA. The people who actually received their Transformers were few while the warehouse operators ended up placing massive orders at the exact same time as regular people. Today I get an email from Amazon that finally the Transformer is available, but not at the 399.00 price, rather the 599.00 price that the warehouses are selling them at. This stinks bad on Asus's part in my opinion. They purposely didn't have enough stock, and knowing full well many wanted it, they instead released only after midnight on many sites and ran out of stock minutes later. Now we have these cheesy companies who snapped up the Transformer trying to sell it at double the price. So I won't even go with the Transformer when it finally gets in the chain in mass just because of that dirty double dealing trick they pulled on everyone.

I am a tad upset at Skype not working on the Iconia, but other that not being able to find a working outgoing and incoming phone app for it anywhere, I am still happy to wait for when that will happen. I have had a few forced reboots, a few Force Closes on some apps, but other than that, nothing new there. I have that with my Jailbroken iTouch so am pretty used to force closes and a few reboots here and there so it is not a deal breaker for me..

As for Netflix I have that on my Roku so I don't really need it on my Iconia. I also have it on my BD player, so not really needing it for the Tablet. I was happy that I plugged in my USB 8 gig stick with some movies on it and it played right away. Decent quality as well. Chronicles of Riddick which is my test movie for everything played great on it. 300 also played well and Gladiator played just as well. These were converted movies from 3 gigs each using Handbrake which melted them down to less than a gig for my iTouch. I was still very impressed with the quality. It isn't BD or 1080p quality on the Iconia, but its was good enough for sitting in the doctors office in that little room they put you in while you wait on them for two hours lol.

I am very very happy with this device. I plan to keep it. Acer to me has pulled off a great model and proved that they could deliver when others were having a tough time even getting their products out.

Anyway..

Yeah, Asus messed up. And with that crappy facebook page (which still has the buy now page with a bunch of links and stores that aren't selling it), everything they've done makes me want to stay away.

Hmm, now I'm remembering that Lenovo is coming out with an HC tablet and a clunky from leak pics, but it'll probably change keyboard dock. I had forgotten if another company had a solution, but now that I remember, and it being Lenovo, I think I'll be keeping my Iconia and selling it off when that one hits. Hopefully they make it as thin as the Galaxy 10.1, and the dock as easy to use as the TF's dock, and it being a ThinkPad, the quality will be great.

Edit: Here's the link. http://thisismynext.com/2011/04/24/lenovo-thinkpad-tablet-honeycomb-optional-stylus-hit-summer/

The specs look sweet and it being a thinkpad, I think they'll keep them, and I definitely think they'll come up with a better solution for the dock, while keeping the specs, and the 'good' price.

The pics are of course just demos, but Lenovo will definitely come out with one, unless they've stopped wanting to compete, and it will definitely have a keyboard dock, unless they no longer care about the business market. The only question left is if it's running HC or IS.

Yes. That is a very nice tablet. As for Asus, that is hilarious with their FB page. I was so upset over that on the 26th, and then to see the cheapo warehouses come out with double the price after they stole them all. Well, that just made me realize I won't be going with that tablet from Asus. The news places will still say its 399.00 but the reality is so much different, and of course they will never report that scam in progress lol.

Mr. PolitenessMan sez, The cleaner the language in your posts, the more fun it is for ALL of our great members to read. ;)

Great info, btw - cheers! :)

@Coin,

The point with the A500 is that it was losing connection in waves with one and two bar signal and worked fine with higher bars (stable connection).

I think the issue is the the A500, since I still get the bar bounce with the second one (I thought I did not, but tested more last night). For whatever reason, the A500 signal on two units I bought "bounce" bars of signal, regardless of signal strength. I appear to have no other device that bounces like this. The second one does not appear to cut out as much, but still does some.

I moved my router to upstairs and a more central location to accomodate all devices in my house, but the A500 seems to be weaker than my other devices.

I still like the A500, but wish they bought their radio chips from the same place the gTablet OEM bought theirs.... Perhaps the gTablet radio is better than normal? Whatever.

Then again, the wifi on my Incredible is much better too, so not a case of a "super" radio chip on the gTablet.

Anybody else notice the one bar "bounce", or am I insane?

I have bar bounce too. I saw it from day one, but so far it hasn't affected me as much as it has your set up. Could it just be its interpretation of the signal? A bar is but a bar if you know what I mean. Maybe its just the way the bar software is. I did however watch this from wifi mon, and it easily showed me why it was bar bouncing. Every signal change from one room to the next changed the bar from up or down. Try it with wifi mon and see what I am saying.

Agreed. This one does seem better, so will be a keeper.

Well, as much as I love the Acer, I am thinking of returning it and holding out for the Toshiba to see how it does. Not sure on the release date, but it having a full side SD card slot along with everything else the Acer has is tempting. Looks like it might be easier to hold as well. (that acer is slippery, and no one offers a decent case for it yet).

Thoughts?

End of summer I believe, by that time.something better will be announced that you may like better.

Yep, best IMO to get the "second wave" of devices in a tech (the A500, Trans and Xoom are) and enjoy it now- Then move on to something else down the road.

Waiting for "better" technology is perpetual. Get it and enjoy it now. Just avoid the "first wave" of a new tech.

Two issues though that a lot of people are having is sleep mode problems and wifi. Per users and Best Buy local stores, both issues are resulting in returns.

The 14 day return policy probably encourages people to return devices, since not enough time to get an indication it will be fixed.

If I knew for sure the issues would be fixed, I would be 100% keeping the A500, but like others, I am still having wifi issues and the waking up from sleep mode is starting to get annoying to me. I was in "keeper" status yesterday, but the wake ups and wifi connection issues have kicked back in.

Wifi is stable- IF you are in a stronger signal area. Becomes flaky in lower signal areas. Acer customer service suggested to fix the issue: Use the A500 in the room where the router is. That is deep. Not.

Yep, best IMO to get the "second wave" of devices in a tech (the A500, Trans and Xoom are) and enjoy it now-

The way I see it, these are the 1st wave of the tech. These were built according to Google's specs to run HC. You can't call the galaxy tab the 1st wave since they are essentially just larger phones and not the true plans Google had for android on a tablet.

Now I feel the hardware is solid, but HC doesn't seem to be optimizing it very well. My rooted D1 and Nook color run gingerbread a lot smoother than the Acer could run HC and the specs on both of them are nothing compared to the tablets specs. If I was able to run GB on the Acer with the understanding that HC was being worked on to optimize the Tegra 2 better, I would have definitely kept the A500.

I really think waiting for the 2nd wave is best and I would call the Toshiba and the new galaxy tab still 1st wave as well. Hopefully by Q4 all the bugs are worked out between HC and the Tegra 2 devices.
