Will moto droid x update to 2.3 gingerbread?

nj02vette, can't unlock the bootloader down the road b/c i'm pretty sure its hardware locked not software

Actually you can unlock it down the road if Motorola releases the digital keys. All the devs have to do is sign future roms/kernals with the key and its as if moto released the software themselves as far as the bootloader is concearned.

Exactly what I was going to say.

i stand corrected, thanks! :)

May as well be hardware locked, you are more likely to catch trout while ice fishing in the inner circles of hell than you are to see Moto publicly release their encryption keys for the bootloader ;)

That's likely the case yes. Moto probably will never release those keys, but my main point was that yes, while it is a hardware lock, it is still possible to unlock it. Just highly improbable

By most tales, the inner circle of hell is a frozen wasteland. :D

The best you could hope for (if there is no firmware fix) would be the ROM developers signing agreements with motorola (like CyanogenMod). That would be fine with me, but I still doubt that would happen.

The big thing I think a lot of people are missing and everyone keeps screaming bootloader. is that you do not need to bypass the bootloader for ROMs. I am running Apex now and actually have been toying with the idea to build an AOSP 2.3 ROM myself. The hard part if going to be to get all the hardware working properly without a Motorola source to start with and work from. 2.3 will happen, will it be Moto created? Maybe, Maybe not. As far as Motorola releasing the keys i doubt we will see that happen, since the same keys probably work for all devices similar to the PS3 and whats happening with that now.

BV i would totally think that you would be one to have read Dante's Inferno The divine Comedy,

anywho After it took us so long to get FroYo (imho a phone that was built around the software shoulda came with it) I dont see either companies no matter their stake in the customers or not rushing to get us 2.3.

They are going to be more worried about new customers and more "End of summer" promises to get them to buy the newest divices. VZW is already having a mad rush for the ifail 4 comming. They aren't going to worried too much about us getting what we want to be happy.

As it was stated above our phones run great with exception of a few apps that make it laggy at times and such like that. But with a phone that is SUPPOSED to be a totally open platform that is to be expected.

Either way in summary if we do get support for 2.3 i can't see it comming to us nearly as fast as any of us would like.

Not sure what updates we are getting. However, I don't think that just because they stop upgrading my phone, they are screwing me. I love updates just as much as the next person, but I got my phone for what it can do, not on the assumption that it will be possibly be able to do things in the future.

Will 2.3 gingerbread come in the updates on moto droid x? Because right now I am running Android OS 2.2.1

Very doubtful. I think you will see a one more release of the current version from Motorola. To try and fix all the email problems. And that will be it. Don't expect Gingerbread for the X at all. except from the ROM community.:(

I honestly don't see Motorola bringing Gingerbread to the DX. Motorola has proven time and time again that they don't give a rat's patootie about WHAT their customers - the people who bought their phones - think or care about. Motorola more than any other phone manufacturer seems *offended* that we (the buyers) would have the unmitigated GALL to question their decisions about what belongs on a phone like the DX. Who thehell do WE think we are, anyway. Note their obsession with super locked down bootloaders and the fact that every OTA update they finally get around to sending out has the cute little feature of un-rooting the phones that are already rooted. No accident, I assure you.

I flat out *refuse* to have anything further to do with that company. My money will never be spent on their products, and I will refuse all of their tainted OTA updates. I already have fully functional Gingerbread roms on my Droid 1, and HTC Incredible, courtesy of some quality developers and their skills, so what do I need from either Motorola or HTC. I must admit though, HTC has not been as relentless as Motorola about trying to stamp out rooted phones, so my next purchase will be an HTC Thunderbolt - a quality phone from a company who doesn't screw with their customers like Motorola does.

My two cents worth...

So.... aside from the fact that p3droid has seen a leaked copy of GB for the X, it makes perfect sense that we would see GB given the rumored specs of the X2 - since it uses all of the same hardware save for memory and clock speed, it takes no effort to then make a lot of customers happy and make them look good.

I am now almost certain we'll see GB.

+1 to this!

Verizon is getting tricky too. The Fascinate phones home if you try to tether without a plan using a different tethering app.

What do you mean 'phones home'? My home? Your home? ET's home?

I'm not being a smartass (........ well), I just don't understand what you mean by 'phones home'. I don't have a home phone, so it would have to call itself.

"Phoning home" is a term typically used to describe when a phone/computer/application calls its "home" - i.e. its software developers - to report on something. It's often done to prevent piracy in software applications, where an app will verify its authenticity with a remote server, or report unauthorized use.

In this case the implication is when the phone detects tethering, it sends a notification to Verizon.

I'd like to see evidence of the Fascinate doing this with tethering apps, since:
a) I would expect it to be all over the boards and a quick glance through shows nothing
b) It would have to be done at a pretty low level because "tethering" through something like PDAnet isn't some system call to a tether function. It's just using the phone's radio to download items and then re-transmitting them to the computer; there's no easy, consistent identifying mark
c) Since the Fascinate allows a custom recovery, it would be pretty easy to bypass, and
d) A lot of Fascinate owners use tethering every day.

Oh yes then by all means, do tell! If they're starting to do that sorta stuff, I'd definitely like to know about it!

My DX is rooted with z4root (I'm tech challenged and the one click version is easy). Will the GB update do anything to z4, or my phone?

It depends.

The update will definitely un-root your phone, and there will probably be either a new version of z4root or a new method of rooting after it comes out.

If you have modified your phone in some way (e.g. removed bloat), the update will simply not work. You'll have to either revert back to stock using one of the available methods before the upgrade, or I'm sure there will be an easy way to upgrade a modified phone - just like there were easy ways to upgrade a modified phone the current version now.

Here is how I look at it:

Andoid phones should be treated just like a personal computer, be it an apple or windows PC. The user should be able to purchase new system software for their device, just as they do for their PC.

Phone manufacturers would make a boatload of cash if they simply allowed downloads of the system software for say, $5?
