Wired & Wireless HotSpot Tethering Available On Optimus V Without Root

I downloaded Quick Settings, found the WiFi hotspot option and brought up from the hidden options, opened it and the "Configure Wi-Fi Hotspot" selection is grayed out. If I chose "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot" it trys to turn on and I get that the Network is unavailable. I tried to uninstall and download the Quick Settings app from wifi instead of 3G and still doesn't work. Any ideas? My LG Optimus V is brand new, bought from Radio Shack yesterday....

Not judging... just an FYI:

There's a reason why it's disabled. If you want hotspot, you have to purchase the Virgin Mobile Mifi (specifically designed for hotspot) and then get a monthly plan for it. If you try to bypass that without paying for it, it's theft (ie stealing a service you're supposed to pay for separately).

The Optimus V with Android 2.2.2 has it disabled, the new phones coming out have this installed. If you have an older phone with 2.2.1 you can get the wifi hotspot. Using the hotspot is against your VM TOS and you can have your account terminated for it.

On another site I read that VM is also going to throttle data starting in October. Speeds will be reduced to ? after hitting 2.5GB of data usage in the month. So already fairly slow data gets even slower? LOL It's sad that they are disabling tethering AND reducing data. I haven't used tethering but it would be nice to be able to use the data I already pay for as a backup to send a few emails on occasion if/when I need to. No way I'll come close to using 2.5GB on a phone and can't use Outlook or type good emails on such a small screen. I agree that they should limit or charge more for heavy use like large downloads.

Beginning in October 2011, Virgin Mobile will also move to reduce data speeds when a customer’s data usage exceeds 2.5GB in a month but still provide unlimited 3G access without a contract, usage cap, overage or activation fees. Based on current usage patterns, fewer than 3 percent of Virgin Mobile USA customers use more than 2.5GB of data usage per month. After reaching this level, this minority of customers may experience slower page loads, file downloads and streaming media. When a customer’s next month begins, the data usage meter starts back at zero with unlimited 3G speeds.

The service you are paying for is for your cell phone. Look closely at your plan and you'll notice it does not include tethering or hotspot for your laptop or desktop pc.

Most, but not all, places that offer you an email account (web hosting, schools, work etcetera) will also offer a secondary way for you to get and send your email via web-mail (which is a browser based login). Check with them to see if they offer it and what the URL would be so that you can log in with the browser on your phone. If not, There's the Email app on your phone you can use to add your pop3 account information.

No more arguments, please. It violates site rules. Stick to the point and keep it respectful. Thank you.

Mine stopped working the other day as well. In fact I heard my phone reboot, and thought maybe it was defective. Now I know what it was.

I have been unable to get the wifi hotspot to work now. I have tried the uninstall Quick Settings, then power off, power on, copied the apk onto SD with USB connection, then reinstalled. It had retained all the settings??

And it did not work (WPA2). So then I tried setting it up as "open", it still does not work.

Anybody figure out a solution yet?

I had to replace my phone and when I downloaded Quick Settings it would not work as soon as I activated wifi hotspot the data network would disconnect, I tried everything you did as well, so I tried easytether and it worked, I went ahead and got the full version and it works better than Quick Settings, its a lot faster because it's plugged directly via USB, plus I don't have to worry about anyone finding my signal and tapping into it.

While USB tethering is nice. It's also much nicer having a Wi-Fi hotspot feature.

Sucks we can't use it anymore with Quick Settings, even if rooted AND with EasyTether Pro :(

Help! I have down loaded super box, quick settings, hotspot widget, and none of them work on my new optumis v. Every time I try to turn on the hotspot the 3G connection goes off and an message saying, Portable Hotspot Network is unavailable, appears. Any ideas?

Yes. What you'll need to do is completely disregard the terms of service agreement you signed.
Step two.
Be willing to have your VM account terminated. Possibly without notice.

If I'm not mistaken, EasyTether is not against the TOS, and can't be, due to the nature of the android market. I'm pretty sure VM isn't allowed to disallow use of a specific app just because they don't like it. As for Wifi tethering, yeah that's against the TOS because you're unblocking something that VM hid from the menu. But EasyTether wired tethering, as far as I know, is perfectly fine. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Wrong, because the phone is transmitting wireless data over the network regardless if the computer or other device is wired or wireless.

Virgin Mobile TOS said:
Specific Terms and Restrictions regarding Data Services

If your plan includes data services, such services are provided solely for purposes of web browsing, messaging, and similar activities. You are responsible for all data activity from and to your mobile phone or device regardless of who initiates the activity. You may not use the data service: (1) with server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing or other systems that drive continuous heavy traffic or data sessions; (2) as a substitute or backup for private lines or frame relay connections; (3) with "auto-responders", "cancel-bots", or similar automated or manual routines which generate excessive amounts of traffic, or which disrupt user groups or email use by others; (4) for tethering your mobile phone to a personal computer or other hardware; for an activity that connects any device to personal computers (including without limitation, laptops), or other equipment for the purpose of transmitting wireless data over the network (unless customer is using a plan designated for such usage), (5) to send "spam" or unsolicited commercial or bulk email (or activities that have the effect of facilitating unsolicited commercial email or unsolicited bulk email); or (6) for any activity that adversely affects the ability of other people or systems to use either our wireless services or other parties' Internet-based resources. We reserve the right to limit, suspend or terminate without notice any misuse of our network or violation of these Terms of Service.

From the Site Rules:

Tethering without a carrier required required plan is theft of services. You are stealing from the carrier. It goes beyond modifying your own personal device.

This is something we are not willing to help members do. Much like talk of how to work the system to return devices you've broke, etc. That too is theft.

Some say, "well, rooting is against the TOS, so....". Rooting, if against the TOS, could result in a suspended account. That is on you and your responsibility and we're willing to aide in letting you make that choice. It is your device, you should have that choice.

These issues aren't related to rooting in this sense and shouldn't be compared as such. This is a decision made by the owner of this privately run site, which we have the right to do and enforce.

Risking your device == ok.
Theft == not okay.
