I just downloaded and installed quick settings, but there is no "wifi hotspot" option... From top down it's ringer, volume control, bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS receiver, Mobile data. That's it. Am I doing anything wrong or they just modified the app?

Look at the videos posted in the original post to see how to access the Hidden Settings on the phone. They are there, and HotSpot is one of them.

Thanks for the link ,your video was the one I used to setup on the first time.But..when I get to the Open/encrypted setting,it wont allow to set the secure one.No idea why,I tried a few things. :(

edit:I just played around with it some more,and..I used an 8 digit password and it worked fine.
Because I wasn't really needing the hot spot at the times I tried,I didn't set a serious password(I.E. 7 digits or less :( )

Sorry, that was a really stupid question... I watched several video where the hotspot option was already there and when I watched the ones above I skipped ahead thinkin they were the same...
Thanks a lot for the patience!

Sprint just dropped an update for the Optimus S that kills hotspot on non rooted phones. Expect the same for the Optimus V. There are several threads about this in the Optimus S forum and hints on how to kill the upgrade.

However, I wonder if widespread hotspot use is what is causing all these 3G problems we are hearing about.

as far as wireless tethering goes, you can also us BATTERY DOCTOR (free app) it has a settings section that will enable a wifi hotspot... also, with the wigit one (I use hot spot wigit) press and long hold the home screen, then select wigits, it will open all your available wigits and it should be there. hot spot wigit is only 60kb so it doesnt take up a lot of memory and still allows you to password protect the hotspot thru the notifications screen... if you want wired I would suggest Easy Tether because it will automatically attempt to find the drivers for your PC... HTH

The hotspot is convenient but should not be abused. Sprint did away with the ability on their Optimus because people were going bananas with it. Should be used for casual use and not primary internet. Go Cubs!

Both "Quick Setting" and "BATTERY DOCTOR" apps no longer allow security wpa2 psk, the save button is grayed out.

Clearly Virgin mobile also dropped an update for the Optimus v that kills security wpa2 psk hotspot on non rooted Optimus V phones.

Open mode still works.
Open mode should only be used as a emergency last resort.

I will probably have to root the device to resolve this issue.

Both "Quick Setting" and "BATTERY DOCTOR" apps are nice but without security wpa2 psk there is no point. I’m a new Virgin mobile customer. I moved from Cricket to Virgin. It looks Like I moved a month to late. Maybe the Optimus C Cricket version doesn’t have this issue. I still have 30 days to send the device back.

Yes, I turned on Wi-Fi hotspot in Quick Settings before I tried to configure it for WPA2 PSK. I moved from Open to WPA2 PSK, changed the default network name, and put in a password. The save button is grayed out. Only open works.

I'm wondering if doing a restore would help.

My Optimus V phone is brand new, only 2 days old.

Android Version 2.2.1
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9
Build Number FRG83
SW Version VM670ZV4
HW Version 1.2

DBNissan how old is your Optimus V, how long ago did you first apply Quick Settings, do your version numbers match with mine?

Thanks.

I've had my phone a little over a month. All the specs are exactly the same as yours. I even updated the Quick Settings app the other day.

I finally got Quick Settings to work. I uninstalled the app, powered the Optimus V off. Powered backup, redownloaded Quick Settings from wifi not 3g. Now the app allows me to save WPA2 PSK settings and connect.

DBNissan Thanks for the feedback.

Mine stopped working the other day as well. In fact I heard my phone reboot, and thought maybe it was defective. Now I know what it was.

I have been unable to get the wifi hotspot to work now. I have tried the uninstall Quick Settings, then power off, power on, copied the apk onto SD with USB connection, then reinstalled. It had retained all the settings??

And it did not work (WPA2). So then I tried setting it up as "open", it still does not work.

Anybody figure out a solution yet?

AMAZING.

got Quick Settings, brought up the HotSpot toggle in the customized hidden menu, pulled down my notification window and configured it with WPA2 PSK and renamed it. i'm good to go, using it right now as a test. non-rooted.

STOKED.

(and although awesome, i'd just like to add that using this will be rare. don't wanna spoil it for myself/others with too much usage)

I just did everything as directed - my laptop wouldn't connect

I rebooted the laptop, rebooted the Optimus V, presto! I'm now using my phone's internet.

I mean how much better than this does it get?

Thanks for this board - you've helped me many times! Thank you thank you!! :D

PdaNet also gives you the option to hide said tethering activity.
Only in theory, not in practice.

VMU doesn't care about tethering itself. As long as you stay within data usage patterns that make sense for a phone and its small screen, it has no reason to care.

VMU will care if too many people (ab)use tethering to use way more data than makes sense for a phone. It's the usage pattern that's relevant and that will/would sink you. No app is going to help with that. It's just common sense, really.

Thanks for the hotspot info. I am using it right now to send this message. Now that I am secure I feel much safer. Great info, step by step. Thanks again. C

I downloaded Quick Settings, found the WiFi hotspot option and brought up from the hidden options, opened it and the "Configure Wi-Fi Hotspot" selection is grayed out. If I chose "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot" it trys to turn on and I get that the Network is unavailable. I tried to uninstall and download the Quick Settings app from wifi instead of 3G and still doesn't work. Any ideas? My LG Optimus V is brand new, bought from Radio Shack yesterday....
