Would you ever own a mac?

@mike - yeah USD, I'm in the same boat. I'm not making near enough for that to be a viable laptop for me. Though, if Apple said to me, "9to5, we'd just love for you to try our latest and greatest MBP, free of charge," - well, I'd probably take them up on that! :p

haha, who wouldn't. Free computer...

Now, don't castrate me here, but would anyone here own a Mac? I would never own any of Apple's mobile devices and have been an avid android user since the OG Droid, but am seriously thinking of switching from a PC to a macbook air. I currently own a Asus Zen book Prime and the experience has left me unhappy. Windows kinda, sorta; well, it flat out blows for me. I am not a power user and only need windows for a couple of programs that aren't on android. What bothers me is keeping track of all the different drivers from Asus staying up to date and the sketchy customer support from a guy in the far East named Bob and the complex file system windows uses. There are flat out too many hardware configurations that windows deals with and it leaves a non-techie like me confused when I need my computer to do simple things. I'm finding myself scouring the net and watching YouTube videos just to learn how to use basic windows functions. From what I have seen from macs thus far though, is that they seem to just work. The software and hardware are blended together into a nice ecosystem. What about you guys? Can an anti-apple android die-hard coexist with a Mac? Or am I just a hoser because windows confuses me?

Of course you can coexist! :) This is the thing with technology..

Example:
You find out you have found a phone that works great for you. Lets say its an Android.

You're a developer for phone applications, and you notice Mac is the best for the graphics of the app.

Can any of you, any of us, truly say we would not? There are things that Android can do flawlessly that iPhone can't and vice versa. Devices coexist perfectly because together they can compensate for their various weaknesses when put together.

That's how I see it.

What would happen if they're was another device that beats all the other ones?

I would say no. Never.

But I've recently had a go on a MBA, and I quite liked it, although instead of pushing me to try Mac OS more, it's pushed me to try out Ubuntu :D

I had a dream I bought a $2000 MacBook Pro, why would anyone in the right mind pay that much for a computer???
I was using the computer to do school work... Thats just too much for that. My $250 tablet can do everything it can do, almost.....

I would buy a MacBook Pro if I had the money. I really like the MacBook hardware. Plus, I haven't ever seen a Windows laptop that I really liked. Then again, I'm not fond of OSX either...

What are your views on Ubuntu or Mint?

If I was to use Mint, I'd prefer the Debian version. It's probably just me but I'm not over keen on Mint built on Ubuntu built on Debian.

When I tried Mint, a few years ago, I went with the LMDE, Debian edition. It was pretty kool, but I prefer to just use Debian in the end! :smokingsomb:

I bought a Macbook Pro Retina 13" when it came out. I purchased and let the salesman know that I was going to put Windows 7 on it and see how I liked it. They had no qualms. It was a gorgeous machine, but it was certainly not made for Windows, nor can Windows scale a 13" to 2560x1600 properly. I returned it, and am now the proud owner of a Razer Blade 14"!

Why buy a Mac for windows? I would just get he Samsung series 9 laptop. Great build right there and very powerful. It has MacBook like quality.

I'd be more interested in a Mac over a new iPhone or iPad myself, but only if i were intending on replacing my TV with a desktop iMac. However, given that my SmartTV can do everything i ask of it and more, i just do not see myself justifying such a purchase at the moment.

Well here, we are not all android fanboys. I've considered an iPad.. but then I reconsider, phone screen sizes are getting bigger and I'm not in the market for any tablet.

Android tablets (qualified as 7" and above by my mind) are aweful as far as frame rate and resolution as far as I've seen. I've had one tablet I liked. A resistive screen 10" tablet from a non branded Chinese company. But got rid of it when I realized how cluttered my data had become.

I hate OSX, as I'm a programmer and its among the most difficult things to work with as a programmer. But I hate windows because I'm a programmer as well but its the lesser of two evils. My second laptop is actually running ubuntu.

I changed my mind. i now have a (rather cheap to me) Macbook Pro. they're on sale here and i got it for $949. same as the Air was without the sale. Surprised they still do the old-school startup chime!

I'd never own a Mac, but I LOVE that they do the chime in the beginning. I wish Windows would do that.

Windows used to.

Jobs and Gates were talking, shortly after some settlement and Jobs promised that they'd make a point to not copy anything of Bill's ever again.

The Windows chime was ok and those who remember it will recall that it was thin and little tinny.

When Apple came up with the new Mac chime, they redid the chime so it was full-bodied and a little resonant.

The name of the Mac chime is sosume - pronounced:

So sue me.

The wheel turns...

I was an idiot, ignore that. :o

The only "chime" I remember Windows doing was the "tada.wav" sound when you booted Windows 3.1

There was "chimes.wav" when you exited back to DOS but it sounded nothing like a Mac.

My MBP sounds just like the old OS 9 chime. Same sound heard in Wall-E when he charged himself up.
