Would you ever own a mac?

My MacBook never did a welcome video. I think that got axed after OS X 10.1 right along with the clip art of Colonel Sanders holding an Apple in a serving dish in the Kernel Panic screen.

The only "chime" I remember Windows doing was the "tada.wav" sound when you booted Windows 3.1

There was "chimes.wav" when you exited back to DOS but it sounded nothing like a Mac.

My MBP sounds just like the old OS 9 chime. Same sound heard in Wall-E when he charged himself up.

Yeah, I may have spoken out about the wrong Mac startup.

But I'm allowed because I'm often an idiot.

I think I need to just shut up unless I check my facts.

I guess I really got that tangled.

Anyway - Windows used to have a startup sound.

It was a ta-da! :)

I haven't followed the big cat version scheme since I only used OS X in an emulator years ago, so I'm not sure which is old or new. What is Mountain Lion, the one supposedly on my Pro as far as new or old?

I currently have Tiger on my PPC Mini Mac, which is probably the last version I can use on mine. I may can put the version after Tiger on it, I think it was Snow Leopard.

Version 10.6: "Snow Leopard"
Version 10.7: "Lion"
Version 10.8: "Mountain Lion"

Version 10.9: "Mavericks"

that's a new question: what's a 'Mavericks?' the only thing coming up in my mind was a rather unpopular Ford sedan.

Or the Maverik chain of gas stations here in the west.

I don't see myself ever buying a Mac computer. As long as you're not an imbecile, Windows can run just fine IMO. I just got done fixing up my rooommate's comp with Windows 7 because he downloads every toolbar, unvetted program, and even clicks the ads that say 'Your computer is at risk!' or 'You have won a free iPad!'. By removing all of the bloat etc from his machine, I made it run way faster(since he isn't running on all 8 cylinders, I demoted his user account to standard and created an admin account for myself so I can go in and fix future mistakes).

Now, my reasons for not wanting a Macbook? They're overpriced, and don't really do anything I can't do on a PC. But more importantly, PCs do things that I can't do on a Mac. Namely, run software like Taxworks, CYMA, and Quickbooks.

I actually seem to like my Mac over anything running Windows. even Linux seems to be a bit half-arsed to run some of what i want to.

Most of the reason for getting one was 1) because i can 2) there are some neat things that only run on Mac 3) i hate MS Windows, 4) Linux doesn't cut the mustard all the time and 5) Android and iOS don't cut the mustard either for all the things i want to run.

mostly it's because i like having one of each. one Windows, one Linux, one Mac, one PS3, one Xbox 360, one Android, one iOS etc. that way compatibility is a non-issue.

Two days into it, i'm really loving my MBP. but then something about Apple's UI has always felt a bit more natural to me. not sure why. perhaps i'm just their target demographic?

For some reason, 'Mavericks' seems to constantly invoke this image into my head:

There's a robin's egg blue beat-up rusty old Ford Maverick spouting blue smoke around town, let's just hope the OS is better ;)

I'm considering a Mac, then again, I'm heavily into Google's ecosystem. Maybe a Pixel, or what ever computer like that comes out in 4 years, cuz I don't need any more computers. I have too many.

I like my Macbook Air a lot but miss the Windows. I recently bought software called Parallel and it allows Windows to be ON at the same time and share the screen with Mac seamlessly. You have the very best of both worlds now.

Never owned a Mac and never will buy a Mac. I run Linux and Windows for different needs. Gaming is done in Windows and Linux is there for anything else. I recently got rid of Mint and am now a happy OpenSUSE user.

Once my G4 Mini Mac OS get too oudated, I will probably install a PPC version of Linux on it, either Debian, Fedora or ArchLinux...

Now that is the great thing about Linux. The computer will never get old when you have linux on the computer. Can add so many years to an old computer.

well, while Linux won't care if your computer is a decade old, software that runs on it might. like games, you won't be able to play the latest games.

Adobe Flash Player doesn't care what your OS is, if your computer is unsupported, it's unsupported. even if you get it to install, it will perform poorly.

Will have to watch what environment one uses on an old PC as well, like don't expect full blown KDE 4 to perform too well on a P4 with 512mb RAM.

mikedt, just about said it all. Do not go with KDE/Gnome/Unity on an older computer as he said. Something like Fluxbox, Openbox or some other WM will run fine. Also be careful of what other software you add, that do not include a bunch of dependent files. I know, I'm always using old hardware compared to the latest greatest! I'm not a gamer either.

well, workable or not, i'm not going back to an i486 even if it will run Linux. a i486 is still a i486.

For those interested, i finally 'deer-fied' my Mac:

Think it was a 486 or a Pentium that I first tried Linux on. Was a very thick book called Slackware Unleashed that came with a CD-ROM, but I never did get it fully "unleashed" at the time....LOL. Couldn't make X work, basically because I didn't have a supported graphic card. Think it needed a very expensive Diamond Viper or Weitek graphic card. Which I managed to eventually work out after spending a week trying to make X go.

my first experience with Linux was Basiclinux on a i486. even if it makes a 'good enough' machine for web browsing, you won't find me breaking out the old Deskpro and CRT monitor i got hidden in one of my external trailer compartments anytime soon

My next level of customization is finding a sticker of a doe that i can sticker on there where it looks like she's eating the large glowing apple logo on the back :)
