Xoom WIFI ONLY - can preorder now!

Just ran across this....I suspect we'll be seeing more of these announcements in the coming days. Finally going to get my Xoom! Looks like it is scheduled to ship on 3/21. (edit: this date showed up in the Google search, but doesn't show in the actual listing)

Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi 10.1" Tablet 00001NARGNLX B&H Photo

For what it's worth, B&H Photo is one of the most reputable camera stores around. I've never had a problem with them, but not crazy about them charging the CC now and delivering later.

Edit 2: I just spoke with B&H, and the rep talked with their buyer, and he told me "my buyer said he can't be 100% certain, but they do expect these to ship in about a week." Note: no sales tax if shipped outside of NY state.

How do you know it's scheduled to ship the 21st? I spoke to a B&H service representation, and he said:

"Scott M: hello, the estimate is 10-14 days."

Sound like the 27th to me. :D

I didn't see it listed in the actual ad, but when you google it ('xoom wifi only') it will be embedded in the text. I'm not pulling the trigger yet, as I suspect other retailers are now going to start announcing it. Hopefully Sam's will have it discounted.

I've bought many photography items from B&H and I think they are a very reputable dealer, but I do not understand the paying up front and no delivery date specified.

B&H is legit .. I only buy my cameras/lenses from them .. The store itself is amazing it runs like a well oiled machine .. Each department is full of specialist who know their ish ... Then everything gets put in a roller coaster and it zips downstairs to the front desk where you check out an pick it up ... It is a must see if you are in NYC

B&H is mecca for any photographer. ;)

It's certainly confirmed everywhere now. Myself, after reading about this thing and many others for the last year and a half or so... I'm a bit bummed. The xoom looks like a really credible device and I'm pretty excited to get my hands on one. But from an overall standpoint I think MOTO really, really botched the rollout and missed a huge opportunity with their pricing. Not to me personally but for the hordes I think even $50 less on each unit but preferably $100 would have drastically affected sales and created so much positive buzz they could have rode it for a good long time. And I can't think of a worse example in recent marketing history for not 'controlling the message'. Why didn't the CEO just announce the wifi release date last month? Some contractual carrier doublespeak? If so, that would be really lame. And no, it's not understandable. Not anymore.

Update: I pre-ordered from J&R today. The sales rep said they expect them to ship in 1 to 2 weeks. They do NOT charge the CC until the order ships, and there IS free shipping (when I looked at it online, it didn't mention the free shipping.) There is also no sales tax, so their price is very close to what Sams, IF (remember it's only a rumor as to what their price will be, as of right now) they sale it for the $540 price as rumored as I'd have to pay sales tax (8%) locally.

From the WSJ today...

"We believe Motorola missed an opportunity to drive volume by introducing its priciest Xoom first instead of a full range of tablets at the same time, as Apple does," said Ittai Kidron, analyst at Oppenheimer & Co. "We believe Motorola has missed an opportunity to make its mark in the market by initially targeting value versus volume."

I couldn't agree more Mr financial analyst guy. Pure supposition on my part but I bet the sales would have been SUBSTANTIALLY higher with a simultaneous rollout and a $50-100 price cut. Like 50%. Forest for the trees...

They lost a potential sale with me by delaying the less expensive wi-fi version.

Had they released the Xoom wifi at $500 on the same day the 3g model went on sale, i'd have bought it, no hesitation.

$800 was too rich for my blood. I love my Android phone, but not enough to spend $800 for ANY tablet.

I ended up with an iPad 2 on Friday instead. And, despite this announcement, i don't regret my purchase at all.

This reviewer sums up my feelings more succinctly than I can.

I'm hoping Sam's rumored price of $539 is real, if not I will wait until another lower cost Android tablet hits the market as I would like to stay as close to the $500 price point as possible

I preordered one at amazon. Very strange tho, on Amazon home page, search for xoom only returns result of the $799 verizon version.

I'm picking up a xoom on the 27th hopefully since costco is about 5 minutes away.. Do you guys think the release of the wifi only version will not be that big of a deal?, am I able to pick one up after work? Or should I go on my break when it opens. Just wondering what you guys think, if it will sell out rather quickly or will noone care. Thanks :)

I'm thinking plenty on hand if they actually release on the 27th which is a Sunday. I have 3 Costco's nearby but the Amazon/B&H no tax free shipping looks about $50.00 cheaper.

I'm betting Costco gets their Xoom's before Sunday (no sunday deliveries) so it might be worth checking Friday or Saturday just in case...

They had the original in stock when I bought mine a week after the release....that says little about the wi-fi release though.....

Good Luck!

It will depend on how much stock they get in. In my area both VZW and Best Buy sold out of their first two shipments of 3G/4G Xooms since they were only getting 10-20 in at a time. I would suspect that the wifi only version will be easier to get simply because there will be alot more places to get it. That being said I would probably get to Costco as soon as you can to have a high chance of getting one launch day.
