Root You Too Can Prevent Liberty Glitches! (ongoing list inside)

dabomb224

Android Enthusiast
Hi all. As most of you by now know, Jrummy and Kejar recently released a new ROM called Liberty. It is both amazingly fast and highly customizable, combining the raw speed of GummyJar with the ability to quickly and easily reinstall common Blur apps, alter the boot image, alter the boot animation, alter the Pulldown text, change to one of several themes or fonts on the fly, and...well, a whole heck of a lot more.

Unfortunately, whenever this many features are brought together in a convenient, gift-wrapped package, there are bound to be unexpected bugs and defects that arise. As such, I have decided to begin compiling a list of consistent glitches and defects that have come to light.

Please use this thread to post any bugs or defects that fall into one of the two following categories:

- Bugs that are consistently reproduceable
- Bugs that you experience intermittantly, but happen often enough that they could not be random

For bugs that are consistently reproduceable, please write a short list of instructions on how to make them happen, and what they do/affect. Please make a special note if the bug that you are describing requires extreme measures to recover from (SBF, flashing Nandroid, etc.). I will briefly attempt to reproduce them on my phone, and if I can't, we'll try to narrow down what might be different about your setup (programs installed, upgrade path that you took to Liberty, etc.).

For bugs that happen intermittantly, do your best to narrow down what circumstances seem to make the problem more likely to manifest.

Please note that I while I am fairly experienced with Software Q.A. and I do know my way around an Android phone by now, I am not a developer and do not have the necessary skills to examine coding mistakes. This is simply an attempt at documenting as many issues as possible, in detail, so that we can help the developers of this amazing ROM to perfect it as quickly as possible. Please also keep in mind that you may be asked to wipe data/cache or even flash back to a different ROM (or Stock) in an effort to see if the problem is in fact related to the Liberty ROM itself.

Otherwise, thanks for taking part in the list and happy bug hunting!

Currently Reported Bugs

- Linear theme is missing call sliders (they appear to be invisible).

- Inconsistently experiencing random reboots during phone conversations, usually only a few minutes into the conversation. No overclock/undervolting utilized. Will be testing further total see if the problem persists, and if so, what parameters bring it out.

- Once all 3 keyboards are installed (Froyo, GB, Blur) the toolbox no longer switches between them. It will say that the keyboard was changed successfully, but it doesn't actually switch. The only time that a switch will be successful is when switching to a keyboard that is being installed for the first time. This problem is now confirmed to be reproduceable on multiple phones.

- Sometimes I have difficulty disabling the Rotary Lockscreen. It enabled just fine, but when I uncheck the box in Liberty settings, back out, and lock the phone, the next time I turn on my screen the Rotary lock is still there. Unchecking the Rotary lock box and backing out will sometimes bring back the regular Slide lock, but its success seems random.

- Switching from Normal Animations to Fancy Animations (or vice versa) will remove your currently selected wallpaper and restore the stock Liberty wallpaper.

- Battery Monitor is reporting Time Without a Signal as 50%, regardless of the consistency of signal strength. Please note that this issue has also been experienced on other ROMs (I have personally seen it happen on Apex), so it may not have anything to do with the ROM itself.

- One user reported experiencing difficulties using Exchange 2007 with Liberty. He mentioned that Exchange 2003 and 2010 worked just fine, but that 2007 "doesn't play well" with his Liberty ROM. Update: Exchange support is said to be fixed in the upcoming Liberty 1.5

- Several users have reported problems downloading and installing the Verizon Visual Voicemail app from the Market. The app will download, but upon installing, it will say that there is one already installed, and that it must be uninstalled first.

- Wiping Data/Cache with Liberty installed seems to have unpredictable results. The first time I attempted to wipe my data and cache, my Market began Force Closing 100% of the time. The second time I wiped data and cache, the Market worked but the Liberty Options menu began to force close 100% of the time. Maybe there could be some explanation given of when it is and is not safe to wipe data in this ROM?

- Sometimes when an app is downloaded from the Market, it will download successfully but it won't install. This behavior has been reported by multiple users.

- Several users have reported being unable to add Facebook contacts to their contact list, as well as being unable to link existing contacts with Facebook contacts (with the Facebook app installed).

- Many users (myself included) have experienced terrible battery behavior on Liberty. This behavior is not consistent, as there will be some days when battery life will be amazing (3-3.5 hours of time with the Display on), and other days where I will experience a 20-30% battery drain with the phone sitting in my pocket with the screen off. Many users (again, myself included) have experienced an even sharper decline in battery life than this, with the battery going from 60% to dead overnight. Several users have reported phone "Running" stats of near or at 100% in Spare Parts after hours with the phone turned on.

As a bug that showed its weary head in GummyJar and is still showing in Liberty 1.0 is the custom ringtones for a contact now working all the time.

What's weird is the custom ringtone works sometimes and sometimes doesn't. There is no rhyme or reason to when it works or not.

No way to consistently produce the bug.

I can safely state that this particular bug is actually becoming a fairly high priority with the developer. Hopefully it will be fixed soon as it is one of my big annoyances as well. :D

switching the animations changed my wallpaper back to the stock liberty wallpaper and FC's both Launcher Pro, and Liberty's launcher when i try to change it back....

reboot and its fine

This isn't really a bug but something that a lot of people want. We need the HDMI out to work, specifically to work with the Real HDMI app.

I can confirm the wallpaper behavior. I could not seem to reproduce a crash though. I will update the list to reflect this.

Doesn't play well with Exchange 2007. Reports indicate that 2003 and 2010 are working fine.

ApeX and Fission both have no issues with Exchange 2007.

I'm inclined to agree. While I'll be the first to admit that I don't understand what components of Blur are required to make Real HDMI work, it does seem like it should be possible. Perhaps someone could find a way to reproduce the HDMI drivers in an AOSP ROM?

Crossing my fingers.

Has anyone else been experiencing random reboots of any kind? Besides getting occasional reboots during phone conversations, I've started getting reboots while the phone is idle (stock voltage and frequencies). Apex was stable at stock settings, so I know that it's not my phone.

I'm getting close to wiping my data/cache to see if some of my reboot issues clear up. I know that keeping data when coming from GummyJar 2.5 is said to be ok, but I'm starting to wonder.

Battery manager states incorrect usage. Especially Cell standby. (It has the 50 usage bug). Clearing battery stats in recovery does not fix the problem.

Since I'm not an Exchange user, I'm afraid that I can't confirm this one. If anyone else here does use Exchange 2007 and can confirm this, I'd be grateful. In the meantime, I'll tentatively add it to the list as "one user reported experiencing...".

Before I do, could you elaborate a bit on what kind of problem you're experiencing (for the record)?

Confirmed. While I'm not sure that the developers can do anything about this (it was a problem on Apex as well), I will mention it just in case.

Really you had this on ApeX as well? So far that has been the only ROM I've used that was correct. All others have this bug.

I was using the newest Apex 1.3.1 when it first came out, and in attempting to maximize my battery life, I noticed that my Time Without a Signal was consistently at 50%. It didn't seem to affect my battery life at all, but it was annoying.

1.) Occasionally Extended Controls will force close when trying to place the widget on a screen

2.) Sometimes when you download something from the market it will download and not install

3.) If you download the visual voicemail app it will say there is one previously installed and you have to uninstall the Verizon app and you still cannot use it.

4.) Must reboot to get problems from 1 and 2 to be corrected

No random reboots for me though, no battery life percentage errors either.
and i can confirm the keyboard switch error, once all 3 are installed you cannot change between them, it stays on blur gingerbread swype

I have installed all three keyboards and have notice that if changing keyboards from the toolbox it wont take effect. How ever, if all three keyboards are installed long pressing the screen will triger the input switch. This allowing you to switch from keyboards.

Ok I've run into a bit of a problem in my testing. I was starting to experience massive reboots, getting worse and worse. I decided to wipe data/cache in an attempt to fix this. After wiping data/cache, I booted up and attempted to open the market to reinstall my apps.

Within 2 seconds of its opening, the market force closed. Any further attempts to reopen it led to further force closes. Reboot, same problem. In my frustration, I decided to flash back to an old stock nandroid. From there, I wiped data/cache again and reflashed the Liberty.zip. At this point, I should be on a completely clean slate. I attempt to open Liberty settings in the options menu and guess what happens? Force close. Reboot and try again. Same force close.

I am seriously starting to second guess the basic stability of this ROM.

did you install liberty over another rom?

I can't seem to integrate my contacts with Facebook.

I have the FB app installed, but when I try to add the Facebook in the Accounts/Add Account, facebook is displayed but when you click it, it goes back to the add account screen.

I tried rebooting and still didn't work. I can't add my FB friends to my contacts list, nor can I join existing contacts with FB contacts, especially when the names differ between the two.

Is there something I have failed to install from addons or is this a bug?

Every time I open the liberty toolbox, I get a message saying "there is an update for this rom, we are working on an install directly from toolbox - click the link below to update"

When I click the link, nothing happens. Anybody else getting this?

I did a clean install, full wipe and reset, and A LOT of the time, apps will download from the market, but they wont install. I sometimes have to do it 3 or 4 times to get it to finally install

I have the same problem, not able to link contacts, or edit existing contacts.
