Root ZTE ZMAX Pro (Z981) root discussion

If we can ever gain root with KingRoot, there's always the possibility that something like this KingRoot to SU script might work to switch over to the normal SU and get rid of KingRoot.

Eh, scripts like those do not always work and can sometimes bootloop your phone. I had to deal with that on my LG G2...That phone was the most horrible thing to root. Even looking at that phone would put it into a bootloop, so I'm not so keen on using scripts like that.

Hopefully ZTE isn't as bad with their phones as LG is. The G2 is so easy to brick, it's not even funny.(I've gone through 3 lol)

Zmax was the first phone I used Kingroot on and I always assumed other phones would be the same, if there's a custom recovery. Uninstall all the kingroot stuff then root with a su flash. I recently rooted a friends Rca tab with kingroot, though, and had a little difficulty. I didn't have time to mess with it and figure it out. I just left him kingroot, and he's had no trouble. All I did, though, was threw a swap to double his RAM. Busybox. Cleaned his bloat, which was like 3 apps.

Is ZTE against rooting phones or what? I know Motorola is very against it and will even release new updates just to patch exploits that are used to gain root, is ZTE more relaxed about this?

All oem's are kinda against rooting but with zte they make it a bit challenging but if you do it they just let you know that if it breaks because of that then your SOL as they don't support that

@Elix9000 not yet...
@JayBondzeWell no... All D. Lg stuff not gonna work for now.. ... So far what i have its on FTM mode and i push su files the phone needs to reboot on FTM which it won't so it does not complete the root. Now haven been able to really open door on recovery adb update . It fails cus signature issues. Im not to good of a writer of script so im doing best i can. Today im gonna buy another zmax pro just in case i end up f*c{ing it up.

Just got on the zmax pro band wagon been doing a bit of Android related testing and toying for a number of years now hopped from the s4 active, used to be really active here on AF, helped a lot, glad to have a reason to.come back and see my new investment is getting some dev progress, best of luck! I'll be watching lol

Also after work I'll talk to a few old friends on here and XDA(shh) see if they can take a stab with their more savy scripting skills

im not that good with the rooting. but recompiling files to work effectively i can do.. all im really taking from lg is the clipboard. the keyboard and the dual window capability.. everything else on this phone can stay.. oh and the call feature.. The zpro is too call friendly where as you press the name, it makes the call. ahaha

I say good riddance to the stock stuff dark dialer and SMS ftw!

Can't wait for root and eventually custom recovery.... How do you port a custom recovery anyway? Do you need root access or do you need source for the stock recovery? Meh topic for another day. I can't wait to install xposed. Thank you to everyone including Krlypumaa for working on this, I don't know any ARM assembly or C++ so I can't help. :P

'Porting' is a term that applies more to Roms than kernels or recoveries and is the dirty way of going about things. It is also commonly referred to as 'dirty porting' or 'zip porting' and is done by taking an existing ROM zip for a similar device and switching out a few system files and the kernel to 'hack together' a working ROM for your own device.

To build or 'compile' a custom recovery for a device you need a computer running Linux or Mac osx with a 64bit processor(preferably a quad core CPU) and a bare minimum of 8GB ram that has been set up to build android. You also need the source code for the recovery you are building. The source code for twrp and cwm comes bundled with the source code of some Roms. You also need a couple of files from the stock recovery and the kernel source for your device, and lastly you need a working device tree for your device. The device tree is basically a collection of files that tells the source code how to go about building the ROM recovery or kernel you are making. This is of course a dumbed down oversimplification since my knowledge on the subject is very limited. So far I haven't been able to compile anything for a device that wasn't officially supported by a ROM like CM or PAC and all I've really done is follow tutorials using the work of others.
