Root ZTE ZMAX Pro (Z981) tethering discussion

Maybe we should compare sources between this one with the stripped out hotspot limitations with one that has hotspot properly limited. Maybe we can find out exactly what makes Metro's hotspot detection work, and later be able to implement an Xposed module or something that disables their detection. Just a thought.

If I'm understanding all this correctly, the scenario described in this thread is in regards to folks on the $60 unlimited plan, which includes X amount of tether data...

I'm on the $40 3GB plan currently and I did turn on my Hotspot successfully, but didn't want to abuse the unexpected privilege... is this normal? I was able to access YouTube from my son's phone, connected to the Pro's Hotspot. What happens if I continue, will MPS suddenly send out the phone cops (they play HARDBALL... who gets that reference, btw)?

Anyway just wondering, I certainly didn't elect for Hotspot on my plan, just vanilla $40

Yeah this pretty much only applies to people on the unlimited plan. Every plan comes with hotspot and if you have the $30 $40 or $50 plan you can use all of your high speed data for tethering anyway. With the unlimited plan they cap high speed tether at either 8GB or 10GB to keep people from severely slowing down the network. I've seen people use up to half a terabyte tethering in a single month and heard of some people using 2 terabytes tethering. If too many people do this it can slow the whole network down. Like I said though, if you have one of the cheaper plans you can use all your high speed data for tethering if you want. Just keep in mind that tethering will always count toward your data limit no matter what you do. No hack or workaround will change that.

There is also a strange quirk where it will start slowing down/stopping. Go to speedtest.net on the computer and run the test. Your speeds should pick up by the time it is done. Guess it has to keep the internet connection on the PC side stimulated.

Data is rocking. I think because this phone supports band aggregation, it jives with some recent Tmo advancements:

And maybe only us and S7 users enjoying these rocket speeds???

My downloads stop too- thankfully just @ pause & resume.
It's gotta be a Doze bug.
Also, when data disconnects, incoming calls don't come in. BUT, placing a call will reconnect data... BUT not for long... Only toggling Airplane Mode off / on works for extended period.
And Data can also disconnect during surfing... not just Sleep.

Hey all the posts about tethering got removed they were flooding out our work on getting this rooted, would you kindly go to the tethering thread to discuss that and if you have anything root related to talk about feel free to put it here
 
Ok guys i got tethering to work and my data hasnt moved when i last checked it on my metro.
Make sure you install phone drivers via usb from your phone!! then unplug
I installed foxfi ver 2.19.3. input my serial then went to the usb and bluetooth mode.. also had to input serial number there, clicked my hide my tether option and turned on the usb mode.
On pc made sure i got latest version 4.1.9.0 for windows went to the setting to hide my tether on level 1..
Went to my phone settings/more/tethering and mobile hotspot and turned on usb mode
plugged phone in via usb and wait for windows to find it and connect automatically
it will be named network 3 (as example) my data usage hasnt moved for 2 days (since i found this way )
when you unplug or get a call it turns off on you
make sure you have it all turned on when you reconnect
Speedtest results are Ping 39ms Download 60.53Mbps upload31.18 Mbps
 
It sort of works, but the data is still not being sent through PDANet. It is using Android's built in USB tethering feature. And it is only running at 0.15Mbps down and 0.14 up for me.

Anyone else notice their tether data going up since last night? I was on 46MB now I'm on 1.2GB and nothing changed with my setup, I'm thinking they strengthened the filters on the network side but no clue, anyone else?

I pay for my plan. I pay 60 a month for unlimited everything. And yes I tested the FoxFi connection over Wifi hotspot. The FoxFi + APN combo will bypass most of the hotspot usage, I'm unsure if it blocks everything. If you want I can PM you the instructions on how to do this. Since FoxFi doesn't support USB C... Or whatever is stopping USB tether, Wifi is the only way to share internet.

Did you ever get throttled? And if not, could you send me the settings you used via PM? This is the first USB-C Phone I've had and I can't get PDAnet working for the life of me.

Same here, right after yester day, the tether data usage is been detected, never updated, problem is not on our side. Metropcs done something to calculate it so they can charge you add up fee.
 
Going to switch to a new phone if this isn't figured out. What phones out there are reliable for this use case?
 
I was using T-Mobile (not a tethering plan) with native tethering switch in notifications tab. Was working fine till now. Now I get upsell screen even with user agent switch.

Easytether, my goto back up doesn't seem to work except in Bluetooth mode- very slow.

Anyway this has to do with the new T-Mobile one plan? They said the were basically giving everyone unlimited data till the plan goes into effect, sometime in mid to late September, basically when we lost tether
