Root ZTE ZMAX Pro (Z981) tethering discussion

FoxFi USB tethering does not work. A future update might fix FoxFi, but I doubt it. Wifi tethering isn't good either. FoxFi doesn't even intercept any of the traffic. Out of 4GB I used on my hotspot in a couple of hours, FoxFi intercepted 800 BYTES of information, 800 bytes of 4 gigabytes. Not really working lol. For now the built in hotspot is best, as it doesn't report usage to Metro. Don't use MetroPCS's hotspot app though.

Also don't use the hotspot from the settings, if you do it will start the tether check, you have to start it from the shortcut

I've found that this statement is false. You can start it from within the settings and it will work the same.
Ever time I've done it, I have had that overlay that says something along the lines as "wait while we verify your account"

Weird every time I've done it I've had that pop up that says something along the lines as please wait while we verify your account

I'm wondering what the difference between are phones is? I trust you that it works on your phone, but it clearly does not on mine, so instead I just use the shortcut same difference for me. Still weird though.

It says that too, but for a fraction of a second and disappears. The hotspot is fully functional for me and it doesn't add to hotspot usage on my Metro account.

Here are some screenies

Mine sits there for a second and a half, I don't know, the last time I used that I ended up with a GB of data so it's kind of hard to tell if it's working or not now, need to download a 100 MB of something to see if it logs it

My setup sped up quite a bit. Watched PDAnet and it blew through 1.3G like nothing. And it seems to be intercepting every single bit of information with my current setup, Not a single bit is being counted toward my data usage.

So for the guy who is having problems with PDAnet. The only way to make it work on this phone is to wifi tether to another phone that works with PDAnet, and USB tether to that phone. But it seems to only be necessary for PSN, as I've been wifi tethering to my laptop WITHOUT PDAnet for weeks and it doesn't count that usage. Only Ps3 console uses data, and with the workaround I just described, that doesn't even use your hotspot data.

My laptop is currently running Windows 10, and I can't get Fiddler to work at all with it. I'm going to wait until I can back up my laptop and install windows 7 before I can spy on what it's doing with fiddler.
I wonder why passing the data though another Android seems to bypass the hotspot restrictions? Does planet edit headers on the fly? If it does it would have to be some slight edit that doesn't piss off PSN, if you can is it possible to do a packet capture from another laptop to see what the desire is doing to the data? If so we could make a filter rule in fiddler to edit the data on the fly making stuff like pdanet unnecessary and might help making a app that can do the same thing with wifihotspot, pretty sure if I had the data that needs changing I could ask a dev to mess with it on XDA(shh) I'm more active their, they just don't have any threads at the moment for this phone

Well, apparently PDANet does something other than change the header. I am getting PS3 user agent data. I was just snooping through Wireshark data and found this:

Interesting, so pdanet actually developed a hack for ps3 data and put it in the app, so you should just as easily be able to use fiddler to setup a rule to edit the useragent strings for ps3 data and replace it with the data pdanet uses, if I'm correct

Or that could just be default headers for the ps3, but I don't think they would call their own data ps3 friendly

If I remember correctly, the packet that is from is something to do with the avatar. Maybe that isn't saying ps3 friendly. It looks like PS3FriendImUtil.

Yeah. I just figured out what that means.
PS3FriendImUtil v4.8.0.000 running libhttp on CellOS. Or something of that sort.

Can you open your own thread about this wifi tether. Watching this thread for root. Got excited that it jumped from 7 pages to 10 only to find out people talking about wifi.........

Is it possible to move this tether talk to a new thread? I would greatly appreciate it.

:) :) :)

Hey all, I've moved the (off-topic, to that thread) posts from the ZTE ZMAX Pro (Z981) root discussion thread over to here, it's own thread.

Thanks and cheers!

Its a functionality that had been disabled in kernel... Wifi.hardware does have the dualband... All this issue's has been because they (MPCS'TMO) wanted to have MM6.0.1 out and not 6.0 OS the security patch. Implemented disabled a lot of things within Rom.
This Rom n Kernel has a lot of berried stuff. :(
So we lost 5ghz wifi, but considering how rushed it was this is probably why we have unlimited hotspot. So win some lose some
