Can't receive or make phone calls

Can't make phone calls
That's not a lot to go on: could be anything from your account running out of credit to a glitch in your provider's systems, your SIM having failed, you've fiddled with the "testing" menu and changed your radio interface settings, your phone's transceiver has broken, someone is using a cellphone jammer nearby, there's a civil emergency and civilian phone services have been disconnected(*),...

We'll need more information if anyone is to be able to help you.

(*) That may sound facetious, but it's happened to me twice, on opposite sides of the planet. That's twice more than I've run out of credit, so if I base this only on my personal experience it's one of the things I'd check first ;). Seriously though, we know nothing you don't tell us, and those 4 words allow a very wide range of possibilities.

Root for call recorder ...?

I'm no android expert, so please excuse the wordy and perhaps simplistic question ...

I have an old S5 running on Android Marshmallow (6.0.1) on which I have the call recording app, ACR. It works fantastically well, and I rely on it heavily for various reasons. I also stopped updating the app after notification from the developer that they were having to make changes due to Google's new security policy, and all was well in the world. Recently I managed to crack the screen on the S5 and, although it is still working and held together with a screen protector, I decided to get a new phone and went for the budget Samsung Galaxy A10 for a mere £140. Problem is, it runs on Pie (9) and call recording is almost totally restricted.

However, I watched this video -
- (cued up for the relevant bit) and find that call recording is actually built into android, but deactivated in some regions due to Google's security policy (IDIOTS!). I haven't tried the app on the new device, but am assuming it will not work as the developers say it doesn't. So I am considering rooting the phone in the hope that this will allow me to change the settings and enable the android call recording feature within the phone itself.

Not really "IDIOTS", but more like telephone recording laws and ordinances in different regions and countries, that Google and device manufacturers MUST comply with to be approved and legal. Here in China all Samsungs have call recording as standard, and same with just about all other Android phones available in this country.

I've never rooted a phone before and have heard warnings about it, so I have a few questions:
1. I know it will possibly void the warranty, but if I don't care about that, is rooting generally reasonably safe? Does the danger largely depend on what you do to the phone once it is rooted?
2. Is there a good step-by-step guide to rooting for the A10?
3. Is it definite that rooting will allow me to make changes to uncover and enable the stock call recording facility within the phone itself?
4. Is there anything else I should consider?!

Thanks in advance ...

As for rooting a Samsung A10 and whether it will halp you or not, not sure, but might be some things here.

Disparity beween two Samsung devices

Very many thanks.
You were right about Sxamsung moving things around- The settings icon appeared then disappeared, ot be replaced by a profile picture. It appeared below it but I hadn't seen it. Having done so, however, it was as simple as you described.
As a test, I loaded up a Contact with a known issue (only one line), deleted it from the SIM at its request, then the whole lot came up.
I also changed the default, and willl take your advice re. exporting to a .vcf file.
Kind regards

Help Running phone without battery

Nothing about erasing data on the phone, but I have a tangential issue where I want to power and use a phone without its battery.
Got a few old phones and want to try to re purpose them. Batteries are old.
I can only seem to get them to boot up when the batteries are in them and a charging cable is plugged in.
I looked at the batteries and see that they both supply 3.7v whereby USB charging is at 5v
Seems the batteries are required to run the phones even if you plan to always have them tethered. Which brings me the the point:
At some point in time, the battery will no longer even be able to perform its sigular remaing task being; to regulate the voltage from 5v input to 3.7v output.
Anyone had any luck in hacking a bypass that replaces this final function of the battery? for example installing a voltage regulator in place of the battery?

Strange wifi signals

So to be clear, you are connecting to your router through the SSID Carol? Which are the connections you are worried about?

You can see what they call MAC addresses for each device, the long alphanumeric numbers which are hard coded into each device. You can find these numbers on any of your devices to confirm what is what. If after you have gone round the house identifying all the connected devices MAC addresses against what is connected you still have mystery connections simply boot them off the network, anything you may has missed will soon scream out they are not connection. You should also change the wifi password so these devices can no longer connect to the network.

Trying to find a game I once tried, forgot name

I need some help finding a game. That was on the app store when I was about like 14ish. So about almost 10 years ago.

It was a hidden object/Escape Room Game. It was 2D Cartooney. But it was kind of intense. Like it started off with being in an abandoned train station. And then you had to help your friend cross like a chasm. Once there, you continue to the next part of the story.

And you end up in like a dojo area

And then you kinda end up like in a room locked away. And you have to figure out a way out. And there is a picture on the wall that has what looks to be alchemical symbols.
The first part sounds like Rusty Lake.

Second part, I have no idea, But I am pretty sure that is Rusty Lake.

running android on my network

i have 3 tablets and a lg cell phone. on all the tablets and phone i have an app for viewing my cameras. i'm trying to get faster speed from them but when i connected them up to my router using cat5 cable and a usb to cat5 adapter they all ran slower than they did on wifi.

1. lg phone 7.0 ran 6 mbps wifi 5mbps adapter
2. 3 tablets all ran 13 15 and 25 mbps wifi and 4 to 6 mbps on the adapter. i have 2 adapters i got from walmart and they were about the same.

so is there any way to get speed from a tablet that is better using cable connections over the wifi connections. my router is 2.4 ghz b/g/n capable. it i can find out what tablets if any can do this i will get one for monitoring the cameras. so if anyone happens to know what android version works or what tablets work better on cat5 cable over the wifi please let me know. or even a ipad although i do not have any experience with them or a kindle of any kind. it makes no difference to me as long as i can get speed to them form the network. when i do a speed test on my pc from the network now i get 55 mbps and if i plug it into the modem i get 112 mbps, they tell me my network switch i holding that back as it is a 10/100 switch, so i have a 10/100/1000 in the mail now and can retest that when i get it. i expect the network speed to go up thru the new switch.

but i need to get some more speed into a tablet for better viewing my cameras with. thanks.

HOW :*(

Only games? And do these games have anything in common (like using some common account system)? Any games in particular?

Games are just apps, so it would be very strange indeed if all games were affected, no other apps, and there is nothing in common between the games you have. So I have to assume there is some common factor between the apps that are afffected, but we'll need more information from you to have any hope of figuring it out.

(Remember that we only know what you tell us, not what you know).

Locking text-to-speech settings?

Tonight the text-to-speech is acting up even more than yesterday. I changed to a different default voice to get away from the pitch and speed isuses and in the middle of listening to a book it just switched back to the other voice that had sounded bad and wouldn't change from that one no matter which voice I downloaded/selected. I eventually uninstalled Google T-T-S updates and then reinstalled them, kept trying repeatedly and finally managed to reset the voice to a different one. Hope it stays put. I think I will try clearing out all the app data and reset the voice if this happens again.

I think there's something going on with TTS on Android 8 but I can't find any news about it online. My phone is fully up-to-date.
