Pings

You have a system notification sound, that you set from your phone settings menu.
You'll get notifications from A LOT of different apps. You have the choice to disable their notifications either in the app itself or the app info page, in the device settings.

Personally, I hate my phone constantly beeping, or chiming, so I simply turn them off. I do allow Textra, along with voicemail notifications.

Someone, earlier, suggested Zedge for downloading different notification sounds and I use it to customize my ringtones, along with custom notifications that I use with macrodroid.

Voicemail on V40 (unlocked)

Yeah, I tried to get the Verizon VM app but the guy at the Verizon store said my phone couldn't use it. Looked in the app store and did not see a Verizon app for VM. Lots of other VM apps, but they don't work.

I don't understand why your phone is excluded. Verizon VM is installed on mine and if I want messages transcribed, I have the option to upgrade to their Visual VM.

Strange Icon in Notification shade

Ah, you mean icons in the 'dock'! I took 'above the home button' too literally (as something special directly above the home button, rather than the row of icons above the navigation bar).

But extra icons appearing there is odd, not least because the number of icons in the dock is generally fixed (or you need to go into the launcher's settings to change it). Do these appear in place of other icons or as well? Are they the same size? Do they only appear at certain times (e.g. if you press the phone icon you'd get a pop-up above it with frequently-called numbers), and do they disappear by themselves?

Most phone apps have ways of adding contact shortcuts, which could conceivably happen accidentally if you let your finger linger too long in the wrong place. But I'd not expect them to appear in the dock.

I think it's because I use MIUI instead I am able to add my own shortcuts there.

As for the duplicate icons, I haven't noticed this behaviour the last few days. I would unlock my screen to see occasionally there were 2 call/contacts buttons there. Not sure why, but so far it has stopped.

Still no more appearances of that weird icon either. Scanned with a Spyware specific app too, still nothing found.

Help How to uninstall application on android 6.0.1

This is what I thought but I never expected that Zombie Infection could be part of that - what a waste of resources. Not having root on my own device is driving me nuts ...
It is amazing the junk that carriers will put on their phones, especially if the developer pays them to do it.
On the plus side, most of the app will be in the ROM, which isn't space you can use anyway even if you could remove it. So you don't really lose anything by just disabling it rather than rooting and removing.

what this icon is

It's on my girlfriend's cell phone and I don't have access, I just suspect it is some dating app.
Yeah I knew that would be the case: we get one or two of these most days and it's always the same story. If some of the reactions seem a bit jaded, that's why.

I hesitate to offer anyone relationship advice, but realistically your options are to ask her, to forget about it, or to be worried and suspicious and let that destroy the relationship. There are hundreds of thousands of apps out there (including a frankly staggering number with strawberry themes - who knew?) so the chances of someone recognising a particular app from the notification icon icon are very slim (and on the rare occasions we can it's usually a fitness app or a "like" notification from some social network, because things that look like hearts are the most common prompt for such queries).

Out of curiosity I did check and there is actually an app called Strawberry Dating. Before you panic though the icon looks nothing like that, and as it's only had about 100 downloads in total and a solitary one star review you'd be pretty safe even if she had installed it ;).

Help scheduling restart of crashed service at 156787ms

I have foreground service in my application with START_REDELIVER_INTENT. When application gets killed it restarts at random interval, sometimes within 5 minutes, then 25 minutes. How to make it restart at fixed interval of time?.
You're most likely to get help with this by posting on our Android Development board. Please provide as many details as possible.

Frame Drop with HD videos

your issue is not going to be fixable over the internet. you may need to contact samsung.

without seeing your phone and what you have installed, it could be anything causing your issue.

if you have a way to record a video of your phone stuttering so those over the internet can visually SEE what you are talking about, that may be helpful.

there could be a rogue app that is not updated to the latest firmware or you could have some settings that were altered -- its just to big of a rabbit hole.

for grins I just tried some random videos using the VANCED version of youtube (3rd party) and all videos played fine. even in whatsapp conversations. I even used another 3rd party youtube viewer and no stuttering.

worse case a factory reset may be in your future.

edit: use your phones camera to record some random video around the house in the max frame rate and resolution. play it back using a couple of different video players. do you see any stuttering?

s10e Voicemail

I have a new LG now and it lacks visual voicemail. It's an unlocked Verizon phone, and apparently a lot of people have had trouble with this. I'm tempted to return it and get the 10e instead. Does anyone out there have an unlocked Verizon 10e, and if so can they tell me if it was possible to get a visual voicemail app on their phone? Right now I have to go through the phone keypad and listen to a robot voice tell me what time the call came in, the number it came from, its duration, etc. Very tedious every time I get a VM. It seems astounding that Verizon (or LG?) made it this way, and it seems like a big FU to anyone who made the mistake of buying an unlocked phones (apparently Verizon phones don't have this problem, even LGs). Thanks!

Help How to fix Dns probe error in China mobile A1s

Did you actually buy this "China Mobile A1" in China, or was it an import from China or something? Do you know who the manufacturer is?

I've not seen it for a while, but there have been reports of Chinese devices that include govt censoring baked into their firmware, which can't access Google etc, no matter where they are in the world. Last report I seen was a tablet bought in Shanghai, that couldn't access Facebook and Google in the UK, because the hosts file had been fixed.

Samsung Galaxy J6+ won't boot

This is fir the J6 and not the J6+ but it might help to look threw the info.

It's a good idea to fully charge your battery before you do anything. If you decide to factory reset its important to know your Google account password because apon successful reboot your face FRP lock.
Last options are replace the battery with mo guarantees and/or flash the factory firmware.

Help putting Menu into a Toolbar in Activity

I am writing because I cannot successfully add a Menu into a Toolbar. i have made a toolbar using the Toolbar element. I have tried using the other flavors of a toolbar (androidx for instance) and all of them crash my app. So I am using the android-recommend 'Toolbar' - it's the only one that flies.

Anyway, I can see the Toolbar! Now for the Menu I wish to add. I have overridden the method

@override
public boolean onPrepareOptionsMenu (Menu menu) {
super.onPrepareOptionsMenu( menu );
getMenuInflater().inflate( R.menu.home_mainmenu, menu );
invalidateOptionsMenu();
return false;
}

I have tried endless variations and always no joy. So would some kind angel out there please give an example of how to place a Menu into a Toolbar?

Someone suggested altering the 'AppTheme' in styles.xml to: Theme......NoActionBar. I tried it both ways with no effect.

I'm a very experienced programmer but am new to Android, so all of these different versions of the same thing really confuse me..... Looking forward to hearing from you!

TIA

So - I figured it out. May this be of use to you.

First, we are talking about the xml entity <Toolbar>. Nothing more, Nothing less.

Your Activity class must extend Activity. --- NOT AppCompatActivity

In your Activity.onCreate(...) put this:

// the ui toolbar already exists, so a temporary variable works fine
Toolbar toolbar = findViewById(R.id.mytoolbar); // substitute your id
setActionBar( toolbar );

Now you must override like so:
/*
default processing to be done only once
boolean bMenuInitialized should be declared as a class field to false
*/
@override
public boolean onPrepareOptionsMenu (Menu menu) {
super.onPrepareOptionsMenu( menu );
if ( !bMenuInitialized ) {
getMenuInflater().inflate( R.menu.home_mainmenu, menu );
bMenuInitialized = true;
}
return true;
}

This override gets called every time the menu is displayed. That's why you only want to call it once i this context, so trip your flag - in this case bMenuInitialized. Good luck!

Menu not inflating

Hi! Have you resolved this yet? I am struggling terribly with this very problem. After a ton of searching I found one suggestion that actually did allow my overrides to get called as expected. The suggestion was to change the Activity class declaration. There's an incompatibility there. So if you have this: extends Activity, try changing it to this extends AppCompatActivity or vice versa.

This change does allow my overrides to get called. Unfortunately I still do not see my menu!!!! FWIW, I am working with an Activity not a Fragment. Please let me know what this does for you. TIA
