Root Rooting

Given that it's the US carriers who are the reason US Notes are locked down hard, I think it's unlikely to change in the foreseeable future.

I just hope that when the last CDMA networks are turned off and Samsung start using Exynos in the US(*) they don't use that as a reason to lock everyone else's bootloaders equally hard.

(*) The reason you get Snapdragon SoCs is because it's cheaper for Samsung to use Qualcomm's chips than to license their CDMA IP. Most of the world doesn't use CDMA, so we get Samsung's own chips, which is more profitable for Samsung. So once the North American CDMA networks are turned-off it's pretty obvious that Samsung will switch to Exynos there as well.

I'm always amazed when I read comments on the internet like "man, that new Exynos is falling behind yet again. When are Samsung going to stop this and give us Snapdragon as well?". As if Samsung (or any corporation) care about delivering what a few knowledgeable enthusiasts want rather than what makes most money from the masses?

Bigpond on gmail in windows 10

Depending on how Telstra has authentication setup, sometimes for a mail client like the gmail app you need only your user name and password, but for webmail (chrome on Windows 10) you need to type your full email address as your user name, or vice versa.

Also some accounts may need to enable webmail access in they user account settings. I would assume you'd have access to that, but maybe not. Have you contacted bigpond about it?

RCS messaging available now!

Courtesy of the guys over on Android Central, a method of enabling the Google Messages RCS feature on your phone... now!

Users like myself, in the U.K. and France, have been using this RCS, (Rich Communication Services), for the last 4 months and Google have been slowly running it out to other countries since then. However, since Google Messages RCS does not rely on your carrier, thankfully, you can enable it yourself.

Just follow the instructions in the following link...

Want RCS chat on your phone right now? Here's how to enable it

Here's a, "How to", video...

Confirmed to be working in U.S.A., Canada and most countries, worldwide.

Multiple tone manager

Your message is a little confusing! :) By "notification time" I'm assuming you meant tone.

You can set different sounds for different apps via System Settings. Look for Notifications, then find your e-mail app in the list; select it, and you should see its sound setting. Select that and you'll be able to choose whatever tone you want. Repeat for your messages app.

If you're having problems with this, let us know!

One last thing: which Android version are you using?

Can I use Samsung fast charger?

I'd avoid any sort of proprietary fast charging setups. I don't know what technology is used in Samsung's chargers, but Qualcomm's Quick Charge technology is not compatible with Pixel phones.

Make sure to only use chargers which are USB PD (Power Delivery) compliant. If they say PD on them somewhere then they're probably fine but otherwise I'd pass.

WoW, I ever knew about that. thanks for the info

The best smart wallet for smart home

never say never.....LOL

the Volterman looks pretty damn cool. sorry but i do not like the Barrady. I'm a feature guy who loves tech. the more you can pack tech in the more i'm sold. the Volterman is expensive, but it seems worth it. my only gripe is that it looks huge!!!!!!

Your prolly right. Ten years ago, I swore I'd never text and now it's second nature. I do, however, whole-heartedly believe that technology will end mankind one way or another.:mad::mad:

WiFi Messaging

Is text messaging over WiFi possible with Motorola G7 Power phones?

My text attempts using WiFi result in either ....

1. message not sent
or
2. Message sent, but it actually isn't. (the recipient says he never got the message)

Text messaging over my network works OK.

What gives here ????

Sorry if this is a duplicate. The other forum I posted this in didn't appear active.

The issue is still there (I guess fb team is wishing more facebook accounts). Which version of the messenger should I download?

Zoom cloud meetings

I use Zoom several times a week, mostly from my laptop but occasionally from my phone. You shouldn't worry about that one.

As for malware, remember that even if a scammer has slipped 100 infected apps past the checks that's a miniscule fraction of the almost 3 million apps in the Play Store. And it's not that legitimate apps are being infected, it's trojans (mostly adware) being hidden in apps that have been written for the sole purpose of carrying the malware (usually things that I'd personally have regarded as "junk" anyway). So you don't have to worry that an app from a legit company such as Zoom will turn out to be infected.

(For the record it seems in the last couple of days they've been finding malware in the iOS App Store too. So no matter what platform you are on it's sensible to think about the legitimacy of an app before installing it).

Mystery Icon In Smart Maps Offline Application

I figured it out, so I'll post it here, in case someone in the future searches for this question:
It is a distance measuring function.

Tap the Ruler-And-Stick "X" looking icon and when it switches to the iPod icon (maybe it is supposed to be a phone icon)- tap the map somewhere. Then tap another spot and it will show the distance between them. (I guess the ruler part of the icon should have tipped me off...)

Pretty Spiffy!

Help When WiFi Is On, Get Notification of Voicemails

Cococarr1959- I've had this problem, too. (After the ringtone app is removed, I still get the tones going off.) I found some of the left over tones scattered all over the Phone.

Some places I found them were: Phone - Music folder, some in the SD Card - Music folder, some in the Phone - Media - Audio - Ringtones folder & some in the Phone - Music Player folder.

I still have one from a long ago deleted ringtone app that shows up when I wish to set a ringtone. I still have not found it on the phone or SD storage (but I have a junky File Manager app).

I don't know if this will help in your situation, but it's worth a try.

Online protection

I can't say anything much about TalkTalk's package as I have never used them. I would usually assume that anyone who knows what they are doing can do better than a provider's package, but that may be a simple option for those who are not so knowledgeable or interested in becoming so.

As for Android devices though, the first thing to remember is that it's not Windows: the architecture is less vulnerable, and many of the threats you guard Windows against do not exist in Android. In particular there are no android viruses. That does not mean that there are no security threats, just that there is no self-propagating malware. In fact your biggest threat is "trojans", where malware is hidden inside an app that you install. So the first line of defence, far more important than any security app, is being sensible about where you install apps from: stick to the Play Store and you are unlikely to encounter malware, while installing apps from sketchy download sites that offer paid apps for free (i.e. already admit to criminal activity) or simply allow anyone to upload anything for others to install... well I'm sure you get the picture. The second line of defence is to be sensible about what apps you install: if a flashlight app is asking for the permission to read your personal information, access your location, install other apps, then either it was written by an incompetent who does not know how permissions work or it's up to no good, and either way you shouldn't install it.

Any "security" app comes a poor third after those 2 principles. To the extent that having used Android for a decade I don't have any such app currently on my phone. If you feel more secure for using something else then go ahead. But do avoid sketchy freeware Chinese "security" apps, especially anything developed by Cheetah Mobile: it doesn't matter how many installs it has, or how many positive reviews they've bought, a security app by definition needs the privileges to own your device and so you must ensure that it comes from a trustworthy source (and not a data-mining operation like CM). AVG will be fine.

As for the other products, Knox is Samsung's brand. I've always thought it was mainly enterprise-oriented (allowing IT managers to remotely manage devices, making it harder to root them) but have never owned a device with it. I have a personal distaste for McAffee after encountering their Windows product. But as noted I don't think you need very much on an Android device as long as you have some sense, so I'm sure either will be fine.

Could developer mode allow me to send all incoming calls directly to voicemail?

But what do you mean by "developer mode"? Do you mean the developer options menu (which isn't a "mode", just a few extra settings that are normally hidden) or something else (the "Testing" app hidden in the dialer for example - that does change some call-related settings, though not this one, but can mess you up badly if you fiddle with it without knowing what you are doing)?

In any event have you tried using the call forwarding settings to see whether you can reset this, e.g. set it to divert all calls somewhere and then turn that off again?

Need help if there is any

well it seems like there is some development in the note 9 (sm-n960u)

Help Exynos s10e not recognized by any computer

I haven't tried any of these myself, but maybe an alternative might do? Airdroid seems to have good competition.
https://beebom.com/airdroid-alternatives/
I guess the Chinese company that makes AirDroid wants to improve their monetization at any cost. Sort of like Cheetah Mobile, etc.

I did read this recent XDA Devs post about AirDroid earlier, when I was doing my research about it.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/airdroid/airdroid-using-tencent-servers-t3955631
"I've been setting up firewall blocking on my router using ASUSWRT-Merlin with Skynet firewall. I decided to block a whole bunch of countries that I deemed unnecessary/risky for security, including China.
Turns out, blocking China prevents AirDroid from working - it can't even log in."
