*** Official Motorola Droid X Pre-Release Thread***

No doubt VZW wants to make sure the stores have them this time. They prolly don't want a nightmare repeat of the DI situation.

I think HTC was just blindsided by how popular the incredible and the EVO sold and then of course the screen problem on both.

Rest assured Motorola/Verizon won't let that happen with the Droid X.

Just saw two Droid commercials on tv in the last 5 minutes. (not for the X however) I think Verizon is combating the iPhone 4.

this may have been answered already, but in reference to the announcement that anyone who has a contract up for renewal in 2010 can upgrade to the Droid X when it comes out on July 15th...does anyone know if this counts for lines that are in a family plan too?

My line is up for an upgrade right now, so I'm definitely getting on the 15th. My wife however isn't up for an upgrade until December 29th, 2010...she is the 2ndary line in our family plan...does she still qualify? When I call VZW the CS rep didn't know. She also said that in the past they have let people use their NE2 discount early in order to get them to re-sign the contract. This of course would be YMMV.

Does anyone know if the video utilizes image stabilization? I'm also surprised that the 720p video is only 24fps.

I don't think it is "only" 24fps. I think it has the option of 24p which is used in the movie industry. The VZW pages says it has super slow motion and fast motion capture capabilities, too.

CS told me no pre orders but of course they don't always know what they're talking about. An Interesting tidbit is that they are waiving the restock fee on the dinc so that we can exchange for Droid X (at least that what the CSR said) My 30 days runs out on the 17th but I don't think I'll have my Dinc past the 15th:eek: I NEED BIGGER SCREEN..........My eyes are old

Re-stock fee waived only if you don't activate

I thought the same thing, but I don't think this will be anything like the DI simply because there won't be any parts shortages with this phone.

VZW corporate sees the Incredible as the most epic launch fail ever for a phone. Not that they're abandoning the phone or anything, but they're kicking themselves with how many people decided not to get one just due to the wait..

My guess is that Verizon is just wanting the anticipation of this phone to build and build untill launch day. Creating some buzz, hype, or whatever you wanna call it. I think its genius marketing! Providing of course I get my hands on one lauch day. otherwise its the dumbest strategy ever! !!!

EXACTLY. They're actually re-doing their entire brand strategy and marketing- no more test man, no more "Can you hear me now?".. From now on, it will be "Rule the air" - more about what you can do with the network now that they've established the fact that they have the best network..

Is this EVEN if you activate it? Is this in writing somewhere?

Still applies if you activate

Just found this info on UnWiredView.com. Droid to get 2.2 in July and the Droid X to get Android 2.2 in August. check out the link below.

Original Motorola Droid to get Android 2.2 in July, Droid X in August? Unwired View

I guess I can wait 30 days to get 2.2 on my Droid X. (I hope)

Edit title

VZW intranet also saying July for Froyo on the Droid- probably where they got their info from.. Although, if you remember, Eclair for the Droid was supposed to bein January but they didn't get around to it til March, and even then, it got pushed back 4 or 5 times, so we'll see how quickly they actually get it out..

Why would the Droid get FroYo before the Droid X? Doesn't make sense to me..

Droid's been out longer-they know what they're doing, they wanna give the X some time to see if there's anything they need to tweak or fix

It might have something to do with the Droid being on stock android compared to blur.

This too..

Yes secondary lines would be eligible, but it's actually based on CONTRACT END DATE, not UPGRADE DATE. So since her contact likely doesn't end til April 29th, she wouldn't be eligible. I'd call customer service and double check though..

I thought you can upgrade your phone every year. If your CONTRACT ends in 2010, doesn't that mean you are already eligible for Droid X at the upgrade price ($199)? Since upgrading your phone renews the contract, the only way your contract would expire in 2010 is if you hadn't used your annual phone upgrade yet. Am I missing something here? Yes I understand this only applies to the primary line.

Not quite. You can typically upgrade your phone six months early, not a whole year early.

I think he was talking about the annual upgrade on the primary line, this is where you can sign a new two year deal every year.
Yeah, but it's 18 months, not a year unless you do a one-year contract. I got the Storm in Nov 08 and am eligible for an upgrade in July 10.

I think you are missing my point. On Verizon if I sign a new two year contract on lets say todays date, June 25, 2010, in one years time on June 25, 2011 I am able to sign a new two year contract right then, you lose the NE2 though. I thought that is what he was saying.

what are the benefits to pre-ordering from Bestbuy as opposed to buying at the Verizon Store?

Best Buy is offering the phone for $199 while at verizon, it's $299 with a mail-in rebate. Comes in a Debit Card. kinda lame. I'll be pre-ordering with BB!! :D

any word if Verizon will be allowing NE2 credits to be used early for this and if so how early? Also any discount for upgrading 2 phones?

Yes, exactly. By signing a 2-year contract with Verizon and getting the Droid X, I'm eligible for a phone upgrade in 12 months. Of course, to get the new phone I would have to re-new my contract for another 2 years. It's a never ending cycle to keep you as a customer.

I wonder if its better to preorder at Best Buy, or just wait for launch day at Verizon. I guess I will save more money upfront. However, does Best Buy allow you to sign up for a 1 year contract?

No, you are NOT eligible to upgrade your phone at the discounted price after one year! Wolfdude misunderstood the question and thought you were talking about renewing the contract.

According to the CS rep that I spoke with yesterday it is all dependent on the price of your plan. If you have a plan that cost more than $79.99 you are eligible for an early upgrade of your phone every 12 months...but of course you loose your NE2 discount.

I think it depends on what you want to do. I think someone in another thread said that if you pay your $50 to preorder at BB then you get a $50 gift card and you get to show up on launch but they don't guarantee you a phone. ...... Maybe I misread it but it seems to me the only advantage is no mail in rebate

EDIT: I found it, it is in the pre-release thread on hofo... from a BB employee:

You pay $50 and it goes on a gift card. All it does is secure your place in line pretty much as stocks on launch day aren't guaranteed. Hopefully they don't ban employees from buying on launch day like they did the iPhone though....that would be dumb...again...

I will say that most of the time Best Buy is good at filling preordered skus first for stores.
