Root [MOD] LOTS of Build.prop edits!

And I still can't get some of the aps on market ;-/

hmm... everything should be showing up now. Try clearing your market cache and data, reboot the phone, then do *#*#CHECKIN#*#* from the dialer. Then check the market again.

Also I would like to add, that battery is AMAZING for me now. Anyone else?

plus some other things were messed up. Just sbf'ed, and doing fresh install

Yeah it sounds like you messed something else up unrelated to this build.prop. Its up to 4000 downloads now, and you're the first that had to SBF. I'm guessing it was something else.

If it was just this build.prop, all you would have to do is push the stock build.prop back in. You wouldnt have to SBF.

I'm not blaming your bild.prop for anything :) Don't get me wrong :) Just last couple of days I did so many upgrades, restores, themes, un-themes :).
Just want to clean things up, and start from scratch.
And many thanks to you for sharing your tweaks

Oh I know, I just wanted to clear it up for the other forum users. They see SBF in here and panic sets in :) Just wanted everyone to know it wasn't because of the .prop file :)

Sure. Did you notice in rom manager this is in there? Bird has it as an option. Pretty cool.

OK. Update on my status: Performed .sbf, rooted, installed update.zip, installed FlyX, replaced build.prop with one from OP
Everything works just fine, fast and smooth.

This looks great. I'll give it a shot, and I wanted to try the LCD density mod, so this is a good time to do so...

Downloaded > moved to /system > rebooting> M logo > black screen... it's been over a minute now... I'll report back

EDIT1: So phone won't restart, I have no idea what happened. Anyways, I'm restoring to a backup I made (unfortunately) 5 days ago. Lesson learned: backup system before editing things like this, that way I have a more recent backup.

EDIT2: Ok, did the install to /system again and rebooted, everything is working fine now. I like the LCD density change so far.

I am loving these mods also. My only issue is with the lcd mod. Love the extra space it gives but don't love the programs that don't fit the whole screen any more. An example is root explorer. It only shows in a little more than half my screen. Is this to be expected?

Somewhere today someone posted what needed to be edited in the build.prop file to fix the market issue. I've downloaded a theme and I'd like to be able to just edit the one that was included. If someone could point me to it I would appreciate it.

yeah I didn't like it either so I changed back to 240

So, I was curious about the Dalvik heap size mod. My phone is not very modified, it is rooted and I removed most of the crap apps like Blockbuster etc. that came with it.

I set it the heap size, and rebooted the phone. Waited 3 minutes to allow it to come to a stable state, and ran Quadrant 6 times in a row. I did not disable or modify anything to improve my scores, it is just as I carry the phone every day. I had a strong 3G connection during this time so any polling done by widgets or whatever should finish quickly and not affect a lot of the tests. These are not the be-all, end-all of tests, I am just reporting my curiosity in a somewhat controlled way.

30m:

1189, 1249, 1233, 1229, 1238, 1193

AVG: 1221.8

32m:

1302, 1234, 1242, 1235, 1236, 1243

AVG: 1248.7

34m:

1280, 1257, 1254, 1233, 1244, 1225

AVG: 1248.8

40m:

1295, 1259, 1244, 1240, 1229, 1224

AVG: 1248.5

Given the couple low values on the first round and the incredible consistency of further tests, I'd say we aren't helping our quadrant scores. From the initial comments in this thread it looks like it just gives a larger memory space for individual apps, so I think I'm going to leave it on 40m for a little while and see if I notice a difference, especially in things like the browser where I frequently open many tabs.

who said it made quadrant scores higher

Nobody. I said I was curious. If Quadrant used enough memory to have to run garbage collection during its tests, you would expect the scores to go up if it had additional memory free for its use.

Incidentally, it may or may not have some adverse issues on the phone when you set it too high. I had intermittent internet connection issues with it set to 40m that immediately went away when I lowered it. Haven't (and won't) test that formally, just throwing it out there.

32 is prob the max you want to do

...because 32m is a magic number? Because the phone doesn't handle larger allocations well? Why would very few apps being open that simply have a higher cap on used memory cause problems? Logically, since not all of the memory is allocated immediately, whether the cap is 32mb of 60mb, the system will show the same amount of memory usage while those apps are not using higher than the 32mb cap. Shouldn't this actually be pretty variable depending on usage in terms of what will actually provide the best performance? If you run many long-lived apps, you will probably see worse performance increasing it than if you run a few memory intensive apps.

Not trying to be obstinate but I am usually pretty disinclined to accept things at face value without some good reason ;)
