Root ROOTING For Dummies

well I have rooted my evo on 11/30 and I had the same problem with the wireless tether,but after read like a tousand of reviews I found that all you need to do is install the updated version of wireless tether and done.
HO!! great tutorial it is really for dumies.

"Seems" being the operative word here. I was having an issue yesterday where I had no notification sounds while my phone was plugged in on charge only. Today (Tuesday) I had no notification sounds at all, NONE, plugged in or not. Tried to change ringtones, none in the ringtone picker, WTF? Tried changing notification sounds, only one on the phone, the Facebook "pop", that's it, thats all...
So I backed everything up in TB, did a nand backup, wiped the caches, & reflashed the rom & kernel. Rebooted, STILL NO NOTIFICATION OR RINGTONE SOUND!!!
Used ROM Manager & installed Amon Ra's recovery, backed up everything again in TB, booted recovery, wiped everything twice, rebooted recovery, wiped it again, & reflashed the ROM & kernel AGAIN, rebooted... NOW I have all of the notification & ringtone sounds!!!
I wouldn't think the ClockWorkMod recovery image could cause these types of problems, & stability issues. I'm new to rooting, roms, & everything that goes with it. Call me crazy, but with the well known developers here & at XDA almost everyone is aware of the dalvik cache wiping issues, & says to use Amon Ra. So why are we using ClockWork?

I agree with you completely, however it is preference. I think there would be a lot more people using AMON RA if rom manager would work with it.

True, it is rather daunting to a noob like myself. I actually found another app like ROM Manager, called A4D that specifies Amon Ra, but it hasn't been updated since September, & the dev's website has most of the links removed, & the ROM database is MIA.
I did a lot of reading before using this guide, & a lot more after rooting, & flashing my first ROM / kernel, & I'm still reading.
IMO, Rom Manager almost makes it too easy since you can do nearly everything inside Android. Although, after the last 2 days of having to repeatedly mess around in recovery I am much more comfortable with it. Amon Ra seems to have a much more streamlined UI, definitely more functions, & seems to execute commands faster than ClockWork. Bonus, if I tell it to wipe the dalvik cache, it gets wiped, lol.
Since reflashing yesterday afternoon with Amon Ra I've had zero glitches in the rom, & none of the flakiness i.e. apps disappearing, no sound, etc., that I had from the get go on a known to be very stable rom & kernel combination.
Awesome post...never come accross such a basic and apt guide for rooting...very useful for noobs like me

1. Will my phone work perfectly with everything fine..after i root coz i don plan on flashing a rom...will i face any probs on the phone after rooting ?
2. Does flashing a rom always wipe data on ur phone ? Will i lose my network settings after i flash a rom ?
3. just to confirm...my build nd software is 3.26...hope it will work fine ?
4. i m basically rooting to remove bloatware and wifi tether(not necessary though)..u js posted how to freeze...is there a way i can completely wipe them off without any prob?...i dont plan on doing an OTA update in the near future...

2)Flashing a ROM does not wipe your data. BUT, it is HIGHLY recommended that YOU wipe it to prevent any problems with the install(see your fear in question number 1)
3)Unrevoked should work fine
4)You can delete bloatware but it is not recommended. If you don't plan on doing an OTA update in the future, then how are you going to keep your phone updated. I will not do an OTA but I will keep updated by flashing updated ROMs.....

Sorry but I need to correct you on that one.
You do not want to delete actual System Applications from your device. Like you said, doing so will prevent any OTA (Over The Air) Updates from installing to your device because it looks for particular system applications to make sure it is correct. If you delete what just happens to be one of those particular system apps that OTA is looking for, it will not take.
That said, if you delete the particular system application, and need to Unroot your device because.. Lets say your Micro USB port broke.. if the Tech who is working on your phone, or even the Sprint Rep., notices your phone is tampered with IE: ROOTED, they can have your Warranty Voided and your insurance revoked.
Once again, uninstalling/deleting system apps can lead you in a bad situation if the right person(s) find out. Or if you just want to unroot your device. Save yourself some trouble and FREEZE them.

2. Accepting OTA's should not be an issue, if you are rooted the rule of thumb is don't accept any OTA update. There are numerous reasons why this is dangerous. Remember when Sprint pushed out the 3.29 OTA? 3.29 came with a new hboot .97 whereas 3.26 had hboot .93 (i think, + or -) so if you accepted an OTA your hboot was replaced and caused you to be unrooted. Well normally that would not be a problem but at the time 3.29 was not rootalbe by Unrevoked and caused people to be unrooted with S-OFF. Not good. So plain and simple same yourself trouble and don't accept OTA's.
3. As a fail safe for all rooted users, keep a Stock rooted rom on your SD card at all times, then if you do need to get back to completely stock you have a way. Or as soon as you root make a nand back-up so if there is ever a problem you can restore and revert back to bone stock no mods.
My venting is doing lol. Everyone has there own preference of doing things when it comes to rooting, so to each there own. No way of doing this is better than the other. And good thing we have a bunch of bitchin' people over here to help out when others are in need! I've been there before and I'm sure I'll be there again at some point!

Rooted my Evo this weekend using the awesome instruction here but now I'm having a problem connecting my Evo to my computer. I see it's charging but I get no notification in the status bar that it's "charging only" and I have USB debugging disabled. Any thoughts or ideas??
Oh also get an error message when I try Menu>Settings>Connect to PC

Are you on a stock rooted rom or a custom rom? Is your SD card working properly?
Hmmm... First thing I would try is go into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik, then reboot. See if that fixes it. If not do you have a nandroid? You can either restore a nandroid or reflash the rom.

I'm on stock rom, haven't done anything custom yet. The SD card is working fine. Have access to all the apps and music on the phone just not via my computer.
I'll try wiping the cache and dalvik and I do have nandroid so I'll try that next. Will post what happens.

I'm on a stock rom and getting stuck on step 10 of the unrooting process. When I was in the boot screen - the white ones with the droids on the bottom - it's not acknowledging that the usb is plugged in.
Is there another way to unroot?

I've cleared cache and davlik, flashed the rom, tried a different computer and a different cord and nothing will let me connect to a PC or Mac. I guess I'm doomed to go back to stock

Let me preface this question by noting that I understand that it's not an exact science and I'm not looking for anything specific. With that said, what is the normal turnaround for an update to unrevoked after a new software update comes out? When are people anticipating that it will be updated to work with 3.30? Is it usually a matter of days, weeks, months, etc.?
Thinking of rooting, but just got my EVO a bit ago, and it came loaded with 3.30, so that's what I'm stuck with. I gather there may be some workarounds, but if there is an easy way to do it coming right around the corner, I'd just as soon wait...

There is an option in recovery to load the pc36img per step 11. If that still wont work just reboot your phone normally and place the file on the SD card that way. Then continue through the process.

Are you clearing data aswell as the caches? Also what rom are you flashing? Don't give up and unroot just yet. I'm sure you can get it figured out!

It all depends on the OTA that sprint pushes out. Phone with the new software 3.30 it also included a new hboot 2.02. They have to find a new exploit and then write the software to root the phone. It can be weeks to months. From what there twitter said it shouldn't be too much longer.

If you have a Safe Nandroid back up along with a good Titanium Back Up (in the nandroid for apps and system settings) then deleting the Bloatware after the Nandroid causes you no hardship as you can just recover from the Nandroid when Bloatware is necessary.

Clearing data did it!! I can connect to the pc now and I'm doing a fresh backup so I can get back to this wonderful working spot again WOOHOO
