Root ROOTING For Dummies

Just added a new Option to Section 8 - Flashing Roms. Now it shows you how to Flash your ROMs on-the-go using the Recovery menu instead of ROM Manager.

Enjoy!

OPTION 2 - RECOVERY (Manual)

RECOVERY

PUT ROM ON SDCARD
Before you begin, connect your device using the Mirco USB cable and place the Custom ROM you downloaded onto the Root of your SDCard. This means put the Zip file in the main folder itself. Not in any Sub-Folders of any sort.

TURN OFF DEVICE
Power down the device by holding the Power Button for 2 seconds. Allow it to shutdown completely. Wait about 10 seconds before next step.

BOOTLOADER
Hold down VOL DOWN + POWER until device boots into a White Screen.
Move to RECOVERY by using the VOL DOWN toggle and select by using POWER button.

BACKUP
Make sure to do a NAND backup of your bevice prior to Flashing a ROM. Refer to Section 3.

WIPE
Use the VOL DOWN toggle to move to Wipe and select by pressing the POWER button.
Toggle down to Wipe date factory reset and select by pressing the POWER button.
Once that has complete, toggle down to Wipe Dalvik-cache and select by pressing the POWER button.
Once that has complete, select Return.

FLASH ZIP
Use the VOL DOWN toggle to move to Flash zip from sd card.
Find the ZIP file Custom ROM you want to flash by using the VOL DOWN toggle. Select it using the POWER button.
Your ROM will now be installed onto your device.

BACK TO RECOVERY
After the installation has completed, you will be brought back main menu, use the POWER button to select the first option “reboot system now”. And your device will reboot itself like normal.

Enjoy your new ROM!

Wouldn't you recommend wiping cache as well? Good addition by the way!! I know theres been a lot of posts recently on how to do things manually... And thanks for updating this thread! Very beneficial!

Havent come back to read about rooting since 3 weeks after our evo's first came out.

Just got my 3rd EVO shipped to me. It is a 3.29.651.5 Build because I knew to Cancel and say NO to the updates on first boot :D - this is rootable ?

I remember 2 weeks after our EVOs came out, there was unrEVOked :), and there was toast root, People were saying about using underclock widget you needed toast root, and there were certain things that would be permanently lost that you couldnt do with your EVO if you applied the very first FOTA update and lost ability for Toast root, I assume this is false information now today ?

I am running your processes in this thread to unrEVOke! so grateful! What ROMs should I look for ? I bet there could be another thread about this, but some major ones, or point me to threads about the best and most functional ones ?
(I am running several businesses from the phone when I am on the road and I try to automate everything from my EVO that I can, I remember before Froyo came out some people had toast root full flash 10.1 on a custom ROM with 2.1 was still current, stuff like that only current and up to date :D Even for media (full time TV port output like DroidX got with that utility, maybe even with live view also on the phone?).
What kind of exciting stuff can we do with out roots now ?
Thanks so much!

Yes

Not sure but I don't think anything will be lost if you use unrevoked 3.

I think there's a link in this thread a few times with a link to xda and a list of roms. Sense based ones apparently have everything working. Then it's a matter of are you willing to give up the camera, 4g, hdmi cable, or some combination of them. I'm using fresh but I hear myn's is pretty good so I'm going to try that next. No problem with fresh just want to try something different.

I'll let someone else field that one. I'm happy with flashing roms and backing stuff up... tethering is nice too.

I'm trying to help my dad root his new EVO over the phone, sorry if this has been answered but I can't find solid evidence that HW 0004 is still unrootable or not. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks

Isn't that what I have written? Hmm, may need to go back through the process and recheck it.

I don't remember who asked, but as soon as I can I will put up a list of all the bootloader options and what they do. As soon as I figure out what all of them do that is. Rofl

For those of us that are already rooted with Unrevoked 3.21 and want the latest updated Sprint ROM, what's the easiest way to go about this? Do we still need to wait for anything?

That depends..

Do you still want to use Custom ROMs?
Then you need to wait for the developers to create a custom ROM with that particular update.

Do you still want ROOT, without Custom ROMs?
You'll need to unROOT your device and apply the update. Then reROOT.
Or, waiting for someone to ROOT the current update, and FLASH it.

Thanks again Matlock. I don't really see myself using custom ROMs, as I'm really only rooting to gain wireless tether and a couple other root specific apps.

Hasn't XDA rooted the current update yet? I see that the 3.30 software users have the ability to manually root with the XDA files. So wouldn't there be a ROM out there with the latest Sprint update?

HTC Supersonic/ROMs - XDA-Developers

The current OTA listed in XDA is Update #5 & #6, but both are "Leaked" versions.
Dunno if anyone has an Official copy that is ROOTED or not. Looking though.

My guess is that they are waiting for the 2.3 or 3.0 to come out. You never know how the minds of developers work. lol.

For hoots, I went ahead and found a manual root procedure (Unrevoked3 doesn't work on 3.30) and was able to get S-OFF working. I'm running into all kinds of problem on the back end, however, as ROM Manager doesn't reboot into recovery properly, and when I try to backup an image, after backup, the phone won't boot back into the image. I'm trying to load the stock 2.2 on top of S-OFF before unrooting and giving up for a few weeks.

Has anyone had any luck rooting a Build 3.30 phone yet?

Just rooted my EVO last night with the tutorial in the OP. Worked ok but had to manually flash unrevoked forever after, then all was well.

i just got my htc evo the other day and have been trying to root it for days now and nothing is working... i tried the unrevoked method as described above but when it goes through the steps and reboots the phone and should boot up the screen where it flashes the rom (it doesnt and boots up like normal) before it even goes to do the last reboot it says "triumph successful" or something like that as if it was able to root the phone before reboot... any suggestions???

What does the program say after it boots up instead of flashing the rom? It should say something along the lines of "unrevoked was unable to obtain root, this happens". I suggest running it again. It took me 3 times to obtain root when I did it.

Software version 3.30.651.3 is not compatible with Unrevoked at this time. That is why it is not working for you.

That information is in this thread numerous times. And when an update is ready, I'm sure it'll be posted here as well.
