Root ROOTING For Dummies

I cannot for the life of me get super user permission in the 2nd section of the guide. Every time I try it states "permission denied". Can someone please help. I wanted to root to increase my battery life, which is horrible as of now, and perform free wi-fi tethering. May someone please help me. I'm a newbie with rooting and I had to google exactly how to perform certain commands. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have already read the sticky and I have been following this forum for a few weeks. I am about to attempt a root via the like a boss method. I tried an unrevoked one click already, and found out im running 2.02 hboot. Instead of giving up and waiting I have been doing research to root the right way (or long way however you look at it).
I came up with a few questions. First, since I have already tried installing unrevoked 3 (three times in a row before figuring out it wouldn't work) does it mean clockwork recovery is installed? I would like to check if anybody knows how.
second, if i do have clockwork recovery is that enough of an issue to abort a root attempt?
third, I have noticed a bunch of versions of the like a boss method guide floating around. Is one better than the other?

It is true that newer ROMs work "better" with the new RADIOs. Now, you can use Older ROMs with new RADIOs, but you're more likely to have errors than anything else.
Which particular section are you referring to: Rooting Procedure or Bloatware?

The rooting procedure. The section that uses the z4root.

Hmm.. Still not too sure whats goin' on.
Have you completed ROOTing and are trying to find Super User? Or are you trying to gain Super User during the Rooting Procedure?

Never rooted. I'm tring to gain super user for the first time. After downloading z4 root and gaining temporary root access, I enter a command field and type "adb shell" and press enter. At that point I see a $. I then type su and see $ and permission denied. Any idea what may be going on?

Well, this guide goes in conjunction with unrevoked. z4Root is a completely different process and I know nothing of how it works. Sorry.

What method would you recommend for rooting? I have hboot 2.10 along with a new phone with the latest software.
I've gotten one PM that the link and suggestions in post 619, above, worked.

I was under the impression that the method that I was using used unrevoked as well. It just used z4 root to gain temporary root. I followed the guide which was posted inside this thread.

I have seen a number if people attesting to that link working, however I continue to run into problems gaining root after using the z4root application. I gain temporary root, but never am able to get the '#' after typing 'adb shell' (enter) 'su'. Do you have any suggestions as to what may be going on?
That's the point of exploitation - the hole in their machine.
When it says that you may have to repeat that step, what they really mean is that you may have to repeat it often.
FWIW - it's not you.
In the past, we've seen various occurrences of root methods with having to repeat the exploitation step until you get in.
Going by my (imperfect) memory, I've seen times in the past when some people reported getting it on the first or second try, others would try a dozen times and not get any joy.
The unrevoked methods seem to magically find and hold the hole open automagically.
That's why they're preferred - and that's why they take longer to develop.
As I'd mentioned somewhere (here? can't recall), they keep trying to make a better mousetrap, but rooters ain't mice - especially the unrevoked gang, they're like freaking sharks with freaking laser beams strapped to their heads.
As to getting the # prompt (the prompt for root/superuser) instead of the normal user $ prompt:
If there's a ghost in the machine, it may give up, relax and let you in.
That's the best I can advise.
PS - as I recall, the steps jump around depending on which hboot revision you're at. Triple check to make sure you're following the steps for your rev of hboot.
Number one advice I give for rooting is what worked for me:
1. Take your time
2. Don't panic
3. Don't get frustrated (that's the dark side, leading to speeding thru and panics!)

I don't mind repeating the steps, but repeat all steps prior or just the 'adb shell and su' commands? Thank you for your guidance, I was about to give up on the whole process. I'm feeling a lot more optimistic now.
I don't want to misspeak - the steps listed give the exact repeat point, I think - I'll have to recheck and post back if you're cautious (which is ok).

I want to root my old HTC Hero for practice before i tackle my new EVO loving it btw.
I was on this forum a few days ago got a nice welcome, I understand this is an EVO forums i was politely pointed to the hero forums but none of the methods work the .5 RUU downgrade method doesn't work. I've surfed and waded throguh all recent forums but nothing works is this phone rootable anymore?

So, I have followed the directions to a t. Tried it three times, and each time, I get stuck on the unrEVOked 3 screen where it says, "Waiting to Root (safe to restart if this doesn't work)." I have waited up to 20 mins. How long does it take? Or is something wrong? I have a Sprint Evo 4, with the latests upgrades (2.2). What do I do

When you say "latest upgrades", what build/hboot is your EVO running? If it's 2.02 and above, it's currently not rootable via the Unrevoked method.
If you're EVO's hboot is 0.97 and under and IS rootable via Unrevoked, keep trying. I've heard it's taken many people more than a few times using this method.

NO! Not if you want to return to stock at some point.
After you root, if you want to update then you should flash a new ROM, radio, etc.
EDIT: Nevermind, I was wrong...

What??? It is absolutely fine to update those while rooted. Just don't update HTC software.
