Root ROOTING For Dummies

Thanks Early. I don't use Safari so that's a non issue. FF user here. I'm just concerned with rooting to rid myself of the bloat. And Unrevoked seems to be the easiest way to go about doing that.

On a side note, I find it a bit unnerving and disturbing that Android users don't have the freedom which one would think they'd have with "open source" software. I remember when I first read about Google and their plans for Android all those years back and thought "wow.. open source, mod friendly software for handsets... awesome ! " And now it just seems like more of the same. In fact, perhaps worse in some respects. I thought Apple had things locked down, but it seems that Google has very little control over the hardware manufacturer's. Samsung is looking to completely lock out user control in a firmware update to their Tablet. But wrong thread so I digress.

I only brought it up because it is relevant to the difficulties of rooting.

I definatly see where you are coming from... But I think its more of the manufacturer and carrier that add all the junk! :eek: It would be nice if Sprint gave us the choice of what blaotware we want, I don't follow nascar so why do I have a Nascar app that is uninstallable? Right? Lame. Thank goodness for rooting though!! :p

Its pretty easy. Download terminal emulater from the market. Then open it.

Type "su" (without quotes) press enter.
# will now show up.
Type: "grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0" (again no quotes). Press enter.
Give it a few seconds and a bunch of stuff will appear. Now to assure you still have your RSA keys look for this at the end:
-------BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEYS------
-------END RSA PRIVATE KEYS------

If you see that then your 4g is still intact.

The grep won't return the actual keys. As long as you have the BEGIN and END lines, you're good.
 
I have read and been told, on XDA forums, that the 2.02/2.10 exploit you should not use ROM Manager by Clockwork Mod under any circumstance. Because it can overwrite your 4G key.
If that is true (and I have no reason to question them) what ,if any, alternative do you to manage ROMS? Or will you have to just do it manually each time?

Basically, they changed the partitions for newer phones, and clockwork recovery hasn't been updated with these changes. So, if you try and flash anything, it won't go to the correct partitions. You have to use Amon RA recovery for now, which works basically the same way. You just can't use ROM manager with it since it requires clockwork. The RA recovery provided for that root method is modified to work with the phones that have these different partitions. Technically, even an older version of RA recovery that we've been using on our older phones would have the same problems as clockwork. Does anyone know what unrevoked is now using? Did they switch to RA or did they find some way around the issues with clockwork?
 
I just downloaded unrevoked 3.3 beta from the freenode site they have on their twitter page.

Has anyone tried it out yet?

I could wait for the final release but who knows when that'll be......thye keep saying tomorrow...

dumb question: if i wipe my device when rooting as recommended, does the music & pics on my memory card get wiped too? also, what does unzipping a file entail? what's it all mean ;)
 
I used the unrevoked Beta i got up to the rebooting step and i get comm error but i did noticed i have S-OFF but no super user permissions no recovery installed it seems.
 
No. Everything on your sd card will stay intact. When you download a .zip file, it is one file that can have many files inside of it. So if you want to unzip a file you just double click on it and it should automatically unzip. Remember don't unzip files you want to flash or you will.mess ip the signature.
 
Is it odd that on my evo w/ the new htc update all i have to do is hold vol down and power and this screen shows automatically? it loads for a second then shows this w/ h-boot 2.10 etc
STEP 2: BOOTLOADER MODE
Hold down VOL DOWN + POWER until device boots into a White Screen.
Move to BOOTLOADER by using the VOL DOWN toggle and select by using POWER button. The device will now boot into Recovery mode.

You should now see something like this when it fully loads.

STEP 6: Removing HTC Sync
Go into the Control Panel of your computer and uninstall all HTC related software. This will help preventing any HTC software from accessing your device while it is being ROOTED so there is less chance of anything going wrong. *I checked and have no htc sync related software, am i missing something here??
 
i really want to yet i think i'll wait a few more days for official....srsly kicking myself for installing that last htc update grrrr....i wasn't rooted prior but was growing a pair finally to do it ;)
 
Lmao! yea i haven't rooted either an i was seriously thinking about cuz i wanna make my evo battery last longer. im tired of going to work an not being able to use my fone. yea im thinking of waiting til nxt weekend when ever unrevoked releases there final version an theres more people out there helping

So is the lack of recovery the reason I can't unroot using unrevoked 3.22 (I believe its called) I was just trying to see how to undo it. I did get S-on but the pc36...img file didn't work.:confused:

Very easy to do it really is one click at this point. You should try it. It was my first time also.

Elaborate on what you mean when you say the pc36img did not work. Also what hboot do you have? If you are getting the "main version is older" error, it is because you are usinging a pc36img that was extracted from a previous ruu with a different hboot. I posted some other pc36img 's a page or two back.

you've rooted with the 3.70 version an unrevoked beta. let me ask ya something i really thinking bouting doing it but is there anything i have to do before i reroot with unrevoked an after i do it then do i have to do any thing like install any custom roms or anything? thanks

If you have the newer hboots and use the one in the op, you'll get the "main version is older" error.
