Root ROOTING For Dummies

It is safe to update the PRL and PROFILE. But not the FIRMWARE.

As long as you are on a STOCK ROM and did not flash a Developer ROM, you'll be fine updating those AFTER ROOT. If you update the FIRMWARE (if there is an OTA ready) then you run the possibility of losing ROOT and not being able to ROOT again if the update carries the risk of resolving the exploit found by the unrevoked team; or has a new HBOOT like the previous OTAs.

The unrevoked method for the Hero should work for you. It is an .apk download that ROOTs your device. Now, I am not totally sure if it still works, or if there was an update that prevents the Hero from being ROOTed. But it is worth a try. It should all be able to be done on your device from the .apk file. HAPPY ROOTING! Let me know how it went.
 
The firmware update is not the one to worry about, is the HTC SOFTWARE update that you don't want to accept.

I was a bit confused because in your OP under Section 2 of the Rooting Process, you advise to update Firmware & Profile, even thought it's titled Updating PRL and Profile.

Also, I flashed Myn's Warm two point two and reverted to the Stock Rom. So I should be okay to update all but HTC Software, right?

Yeah. I need to reread the Guide and double check myself. Not having a Stock ROM forces me to go by Memory. Might need to just Flash my Backup of my Stock ROM :p
 
Hey guys and gals!

I thought I would add this incase people were not aware... The pc36img that is posted in the op will only work if you rooted with hboot .97 or below. If you have the newer hboots and use the one in the op, you'll get the "main version is older" error. So I thought I would post the other pc36img's that I found over at XDA for those of you who have rooted 3.30 and 3.70.

If I want to un-root but I only have a mac computer will the files stil work the same way? or do i have to use a windows computer?

And the what about the unrevoked s-on? because I tried it already and when I had my phone on recovery i didnt see the s-on file on my phone even though i did tranfer it to my sd card.
 
Are you guys sure that v3.22: doesnt work with the latest hboot. on the unrevoked website it says :

"At this time, unrevoked3 works on all versions of the supported phones, thanks to the exploit discovered by Sebastian Krahmer."

could it have been "fixed"?

thanks- really looking forward to be able to root already.

They just haven't updated their site. It definitely hasn't been updated to work with hboot 2.02 or 2.10 yet.
 
So I got all excited and went through this process, it says it was successful on the unrEVOked software when it was done but when I went back into the bootloader it says S-ON and I now see it's version 2.02. Is there another way to root this phone or am I stuck for the moment?

See post 619 on the previous page, maybe also post 627, and 666 & 667.

That will vector you to a more manual method at XDA, along with some notes from PM.

I'd advise - pay best attention to Matlock, akazabam, wrapkgb and the other helpful experienced rooters.

Have you flashed the unrEVOked Forever? I had the same experience, but read somewhere on this forum(can't remember where) that flashing the unrevoked forever file is what changes it to S-OFF. Sure enough, I flashed it, and i got the S-OFF.

Edit: Nevermind. I didn't see that part of your post that said you had verison 2.02.
 
I have a (hopefully) quick question pertaining to rooting on OS X. ( 10.6.4) Just checked the bootloader on my EVO and says that I have H boot 0.97 Rest of the info:

Android Version 2.2
Baseband: 2.15.00.09.01
Build: 3.29.651.5
Software #: 3.29 " " " "
PRI: 1.77_003
PRL: 60672

Just want to make sure that I'm good to go with the latest version of Unrevoked before I move forward. Also, reading up on things here, it is suggested to back up all data then wipe the device clean before hand. Should I still do this? My primary reason for rooting is to rid my device of all the bloatware, then perhaps do a bit of theming at some point. I just don't want to lose my phone numbers, since I have a lot which are not associated with Gmail or Facebook etc...

I don't know if I'll go with another ROM for now, because I'm somewhat satisfied with stock. Unless of course my 3g speeds will improve with another ROM ? (currently, speeds are hit and miss, ranging from abysmal to "ok") For now, I guess I just want to root for the privilege of removing the junk.

Advice? I'd like to root asap.

I have been trying to root my phone for the past two days. The problem I keep running into is during the clockworkmod recovery right at the end of the unrEVOked recovery tool. An error keeps occurring as follows;

Waiting for SD Card to mount (20s)

After all this I still had superpermission on my EVO and I was able to go through and turn S-on to S-off, but when I try to flash a ROM it doesn't work and when I tried to open Titanium backup it said I was Rooted.

Any ideas?

Well, a few people in that thread simply suggested using Unrevoked, which leads me back to my original question: "With my H Boot version and all that other stuff I listed, am I good to go with the latest version of Unrevoked?"

I already downloaded the latest version for Mac, and to be quite honest, I want this to be as dumb/simple for me as possible, leaving the least amount of risk or mistakes to make, possible.

I do appreciate the link though and will give that tutorial a good read.

Answer is yes - HBOOT 0.97 is good to go with the simple method in this thread's OP.

The Mac link I gave just helps if you need things to download correctly with Safari, stuff like that - may not be needed with the new rooting methods, I tossed it out just in case. Some of that might be useful tho.
 
Thanks Early. I don't use Safari so that's a non issue. FF user here. I'm just concerned with rooting to rid myself of the bloat. And Unrevoked seems to be the easiest way to go about doing that.

On a side note, I find it a bit unnerving and disturbing that Android users don't have the freedom which one would think they'd have with "open source" software. I remember when I first read about Google and their plans for Android all those years back and thought "wow.. open source, mod friendly software for handsets... awesome ! " And now it just seems like more of the same. In fact, perhaps worse in some respects. I thought Apple had things locked down, but it seems that Google has very little control over the hardware manufacturer's. Samsung is looking to completely lock out user control in a firmware update to their Tablet. But wrong thread so I digress.

I only brought it up because it is relevant to the difficulties of rooting.
