All Things Froyo

Read that article with interest. Hard to know the truth - the Evo had Froyo pronto, and it was as much a Desire variant as the Epic is from the Galaxy S.

Android update porting: get AOSP codebase, update kernel, update radio drivers, update display driver (or not), layer in Sammy UI, bundle in bloatware ... perform QA - release.

Not that adult a puzzle.

I'm just wondering - we know that Samsung and the carriers both do QA - if I were a carrier, I'd insist that the big complaint generators (I'm looking at you, GPS) get addressed before I let you stick me with new software with that our QA missed (seeing as how we booted that one last time).

Anyway - what a nightmare.

I feel like it's both Samsung AND the US carriers that are screwing up the release. Like they can't coordinate correctly or something.

You are exactly right. This is a unified circular mess-up these idiots at Samsung and insert your service provider have caused. I am just going to enjoy cognition until this phones life is up and then trade up. Never again, that is my official stance on Samsung. This companies wants to be number one but it is not going to happen on my coin. Never again.

I now must admit that I completely regret not returning this phone within my 30 day return window and getting a wp7 which is supposedly getting a huge update in January bringing a lot of the basic functionality that was missing at launch along with turn by turn navigation. Or hell, at this point I almost feel like selling out to apple and getting an iphone 3gs or 4. At least we know it wouldn't be as fragmented when it comes to apps or updates as the android phones.

The reason this is annoying me is not only things like flash and the extra speed, but now a lot of apps have froyo exclusive features. Take the facebook app's new push notifications. Or the chrome to phone integration with the google chrome browser. Or how about the new froyo exclusive gestures in google maps 5. Every time an app comes out with an update, we are getting further and further left behind. We aren't just missing out on flash websites.

I am trying to be an understanding patient customer, but I simply can't wrap my head around why froyo is taking so long. We can sit here and say that the reason is because samsung is tweaking it, or at&t is tweaking it but who really knows? I would assume it isn't samsung because froyo is out for international galaxy s phones. I would assume it isn't at&t because it can't take this long to update their crappy paid navigator and instant messaging apps. At&t should just forget about navigator and their other crappy apps and release froyo already.

The only thing that would justify the update taking this long is if they are skipping froyo and going straight to gingerbread which almost seams feasible to me....maybe they got halfway done with froyo and said forget it lets just go to gingerbread now. They must know the ins and outs of gingerbread by now having released the nexus s and the galaxy s phones, especially the international galaxy s are virtually exactly identical to the nexus s except the nfc chip.

But even by going straight to gingerbread, they should at the very least officially announced their intention of doing so. That would at least calm the masses, and salvage their image a bit.

This is just puzzling. I followed galaxySsupport on twitter and can see the daily dose of vehement tweets directed at them over the delay of 2.2 and galaxySsupport redirected many of those nasty tweets up the chain, or at least they claimed to have passed along the frustrations up the chain... and yet still no official statement on the next update.

If all those do-dads are that important to you, why don't you go ahead & flash a 2.2 rom?

Trying to decide between the capivate and the focus. This thread is pushing me toward windows phone. Really stinks my wife's HTC incredible got updated last July. Samsung and AT&T really aren't supporting this phone very well. Too bad because I really like Android, but I want the latest version to come stock on the phone.

...I want the latest version to come stock on the phone.

The fulfillment of this wish may or may not satisfy your strategic phone needs. If today's stock Captivate came with Froyo, any experienced shortcomings would likely remain shortcomings in the months ahead. In other words, if you want a phone backed by a responsive, communicative, consumer-oriented company, purchase something other than a Samsung device.

Problem is I travel internationally and need to be able to use my phone overseas. My choice therefore is AT&T or Tmobile. I guess I could switch to Tmobile and get a nexus s.

I'm currently on a 2 wk trip to south of chile & could not ask for a better performing international device than the captivate

No..I need to be available on my US # but I bought a local sim card and dropped it into an unlocked nokia I have laying around

Why do people keep saying this when someone complains we don't have froyo. The reason I don't flash a rom is because I'm a broke college student and I can't risk turning my phone into a $500 paperweight.

If you're deciding between a galaxy s and the samsung focus, get the samsung focus. Yes...its samsung, but atleast samsung or at&t won't be controlling the updates as much. Also wp7 is getting turn by turn bing navigation soon. The only android phone worth getting is a nexus phone.

On twitter from the super-nice ladies that man the @GalaxySsupport profile I got the following "canned" message that illustrates a couple of things for me:
@smknipe Hi Stephen. We are working to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available to all U.S. Galaxy S owners as soon as possible. (cont)
@smknipe Due to the complexity and unique functionality of each Galaxy S device, we are performing additional testing. (cont)
@smknipe Samsung feels it is important to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available only after we feel that we can give the (cont)
@smknipe millions of U.S. Galaxy S owners a simple and reliable upgrade experience. We sincerely thank you for your loyalty. Happy New Year!

To which I replied:
@GalaxySsupport I get all of that and I understand you get paid to say it, but honestly, Samsung has lied already so I don't believe it

Harsh, maybe, but not too bad I don't think...

What this new "canned" response tells me is:
1. Samsung is still testing the update (a.k.a. AT&T doesn't even have it for their testing yet)
2. The verbiage also suggests what blogs have been saying all along, that the update will come to shall the US variants more or less at the same time.
And
3. As speculated, it will be OTA.

Now i just wonder how long we will be waiting...

I think the main reason that we don't have Froyo yet is that AT&T is reluctant to release an update that may cause a huge amount of warranty claims for bricked or damaged Captivates.

When Froyo was released for the Galaxy 9000's in Europe it was quickly pulled because it was bricking phones. The software was reworked and released at a later date. When Froyo was released in Canada it damaged many internal SD cards which bricked the phones. That software also had to be reworked.

If only a very small percentage (say 5%) of AT&T Captivates are bricked, damaged or just screwed up by an update that is a tremedous quantity of phones to replace - affecting AT&T's bottom line. Maybe Samsung would have to share the loss, depending on how their contracts with AT&T are written.

I can envision that meeting between the VP's of Software at AT&T and Samsung sitting in a room with the CEO's of each of their companies . . . after the update presentation one CEO says "This update may destroy 90,000 phones that we'll have to replace . . are you out of your (insert expletive) minds"????

Maybe they want to wait until 2011 to take the writeoff then.:(

And the IntoMobile website just posted that Sprint pulled the 2.2 update for the Epic (isn't this the 2nd time it's been pulled?).

From IntoMobile . . . .

"Hot on the heels of Samsung

Here are the only two answers you need. They've been posted time and time again:

From Samsung:

"We are unable to speculate when a software revision might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion."

From forum members:

If you don't want to wait, load a custom ROM.

That's it. Have a good day. No need for another thread with 100 rants, speculation, and nonsense.

I dunno if any of you all have heard of the app Yodamap, it's like an android web forum that gives you a little location flag on a world map when you post. So you can see what people are saying around the world. (Go to YodaMap - A real-time global communication platform.).

Anyway, one of cool things about it, is there is a "translate" button which can do machine translation of what people write in different languages.

So 2 days ago, I was scrolling around in Eastern Europe, and was translating random people's posts. And there was one Ukraine guy that was writing in Ukrainian, "Where is Android 2.2 for galaxy S in Ukraine. I try download from Kies but always nothing"

People rant because they want what was promised. I bought my captivate in August and was told the update would be out no later than October. The concerns levied at the time were not that impactful because they were remidied by the update. As far as the custom ROM is concerned, many (including me) dont want to void our warranty and/or risk bricking the phone. So as you can see, all we are left to do is voice our displeasure with AT&T and Samsung in the hopes there will be enough of a groundswell to get their attention. Pointless I know but it may help someone else from buying into this crap.

I agree.

Speaking for Android Forums, there's always a place for speculation, rumors and complaints. Socializing information is but one valid way to learn or work things out. Take all the bandwidth you need on this crucial subject, just please constrain it to this thread.

If goes into bad ranting or nonsense or even if you're not sure, kindly hit the !Report button to the left of the post in question - it's our hotline - we'll be more than happy to limit that, that's what we're here for.

Thanks, everybuddy!
