I feel like it's both Samsung AND the US carriers that are screwing up the release. Like they can't coordinate correctly or something.
I now must admit that I completely regret not returning this phone within my 30 day return window and getting a wp7 which is supposedly getting a huge update in January bringing a lot of the basic functionality that was missing at launch along with turn by turn navigation. Or hell, at this point I almost feel like selling out to apple and getting an iphone 3gs or 4. At least we know it wouldn't be as fragmented when it comes to apps or updates as the android phones.
The reason this is annoying me is not only things like flash and the extra speed, but now a lot of apps have froyo exclusive features. Take the facebook app's new push notifications. Or the chrome to phone integration with the google chrome browser. Or how about the new froyo exclusive gestures in google maps 5. Every time an app comes out with an update, we are getting further and further left behind. We aren't just missing out on flash websites.
I am trying to be an understanding patient customer, but I simply can't wrap my head around why froyo is taking so long. We can sit here and say that the reason is because samsung is tweaking it, or at&t is tweaking it but who really knows? I would assume it isn't samsung because froyo is out for international galaxy s phones. I would assume it isn't at&t because it can't take this long to update their crappy paid navigator and instant messaging apps. At&t should just forget about navigator and their other crappy apps and release froyo already.
The only thing that would justify the update taking this long is if they are skipping froyo and going straight to gingerbread which almost seams feasible to me....maybe they got halfway done with froyo and said forget it lets just go to gingerbread now. They must know the ins and outs of gingerbread by now having released the nexus s and the galaxy s phones, especially the international galaxy s are virtually exactly identical to the nexus s except the nfc chip.
...I want the latest version to come stock on the phone.
The fulfillment of this wish may or may not satisfy your strategic phone needs. If today's stock Captivate came with Froyo, any experienced shortcomings would likely remain shortcomings in the months ahead. In other words, if you want a phone backed by a responsive, communicative, consumer-oriented company, purchase something other than a Samsung device.
Problem is I travel internationally and need to be able to use my phone overseas. My choice therefore is AT&T or Tmobile. I guess I could switch to Tmobile and get a nexus s.
I'm currently on a 2 wk trip to south of chile & could not ask for a better performing international device than the captivate
Why do people keep saying this when someone complains we don't have froyo. The reason I don't flash a rom is because I'm a broke college student and I can't risk turning my phone into a $500 paperweight. If all those do-dads are that important to you, why don't you go ahead & flash a 2.2 rom?
If you're deciding between a galaxy s and the samsung focus, get the samsung focus. Yes...its samsung, but atleast samsung or at&t won't be controlling the updates as much. Also wp7 is getting turn by turn bing navigation soon. The only android phone worth getting is a nexus phone.Trying to decide between the capivate and the focus. This thread is pushing me toward windows phone. Really stinks my wife's HTC incredible got updated last July. Samsung and AT&T really aren't supporting this phone very well. Too bad because I really like Android, but I want the latest version to come stock on the phone.

And the IntoMobile website just posted that Sprint pulled the 2.2 update for the Epic (isn't this the 2nd time it's been pulled?).
From IntoMobile . . . .
"Hot on the heels of Samsung
Here are the only two answers you need. They've been posted time and time again:
From Samsung:
"We are unable to speculate when a software revision might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion."
From forum members:
If you don't want to wait, load a custom ROM.
That's it. Have a good day. No need for another thread with 100 rants, speculation, and nonsense.
