Do you still feel that your Droid X is a top of the line phone?

I've had my DX a week today and it already worries me that it will soon be outdated. I upgraded now in order to avoid the flood of 4G phones that could possibly require a hugely expensive data plan when I don't even have 4G coverage. I guess at some point I'll just have to accept the fact that any phone, other than the iPhone, gets outdated in a matter of months. Its sad, but true. As of now I absolutely love my X. And as far as being outdated goes, how much faster can a phone get? I love the idea of dual-core but how many of us would actually utilize it?

+1

The Droid X plain ROCKS! Even if its no longer flagship tech it will still be a great phone this time next year and beyond, regardless of what will be out then. As said above, just enjoy it (and root it, and overclock it, and ROM it, etc...)

Its all good :D

This thread is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous and sad. I own a Motorola Droid that I've had since December 2009 and I'm still in awe at how awesome this phone is and you folks are debating whether or not the dx is still a "top of the line" phone. Utterly hilarious. We Americans are so spoiled.

I'll just have to accept the fact that any phone, other than the iPhone, gets outdated...

Do you mean that the iPhone gets outdated faster than a few months? Because it's certainly not immune to becoming just as obsolete as the next guy. In fact if you care about having the ability to watch flash content off the internet, then the i4 became outdated last summer when froyo dropped on Android devices. And the i5 won't be catching up in that category since Apple and adobe have been feuding for years and years.

Now some of the other things that I would consider outdating the iphone, such as not having the ability to get one with a bigger/smaller screen if one wanted one, not offering a model with a physical keyboard, not having physical buttons if that's what the customer prefers... you may not consider outdating. I'm just curious what makes you feel as if the iPhone somehow remains current through out its year long shelf life where other devices don't... if that's what you were implying.

At the rate cellular technology is advancing these days, nobody can create a 'future proof' device no matter how much stuff they cram into them. Processors get faster, memory gets bigger, option such as NFC develop.... it's an impossible task. All you need to know when you buy ANYTHING at all from a carrier is that these little buggers can do more than you'll ever be able to get them to do. Their potential really is enormous.

The best strategy is to compile a list of features that you want/need when it comes time to upgrade. Then read some reviews on the devices out that have those features when it's time to upgrade, and go down to the store to try the ones that most interest you and go with your favorite.

You must resist researching future technologies that are coming soon, or else you'll simply find yourself forever waiting for that 'ultimate' device to drop. It is now, and forever will be about 6 months away.

I did mean that the iphone has a shelf life of a year compared to a matter of months for a droid. Im fully aware that the iphone is very outdated compared to most android phones, but in terms of iphones you have the best model for a full year. Most people would admit that it would feel great to have the best and newest version of a phone for a full year. That is the only area where I feel apple values its customers more than companies like motorola.

only thing we are missing on the X IMO is front facing camara (which i dont care about), 4G (dont care), netflix is the only thing i want.

I guess we just don't think quite alike then. Sure the iPhone has a one year shelf life, but if I'm one of those tech geeks out there who always has to have the next 'IT' phone as soon as it's released, then it's not going to matter.

When the iPhone 5 drops I'll run out and get it (I'm talking like I'm this so-called tech geek.... I'm not personally going to get the iPhone 5), then a few months later when Motorola comes out with a 2gig processor and a 3D camera, then I'm suddenly going to feel like my phone is outdated.

The way I view it Motorola is trying harder to meet the needs of those people who have to have the most up to date device that they can get by coming out with newer technologies as they evolve, instead of waiting to put together one device per year.

But like I said, that's just my opinion. You don't have to subscribe to it.

I've had my Droid X for almost 5 months now and rather than becoming outdated, its only gotten better. Granted, I've learned to root and do some other cool things with it, but this phone will definitely have more than a one-year shelf life for me. No phone is perfect (and I've had some growing pains with the DX), but it has raised the bar a couple orders of magnitude over my previous phones.

Thank God for this and some of the other Android forums - I'm always learning new things, or finding new apps that I never knew existed that expand the envelope of what this phone can do. Sure - there will be better phones eventually, but in the past 5 months I haven't reached the limit of what my DX is capable of and even after the dual-core monsters have arrived my phone will still be an awesome piece of hardware :D

The above is definitely my opinion, but after a lot of what I've experienced, seen and read I'm convinced the Droid X has been a great investment and will be a top-of-the-line phone for quite a while to come.

It will be interesting to see what further improvements come when GB is released...

Note - as I've said before, I'm not a fan of Apple's phone products, but I'm glad the iPhone is available for Verizon customers. People can argue about which is better, has a longer shelf life, etc but the important thing is that we have choice. The competition between Apple, Android, Windows7, etc will only improve the quality of which ever phone we prefer - and that's always a good thing :)

The fact that I worry about my phone being outdated is simply because of the fact that i would love to have the latest and greatest device, even though its hardly possible. Ill just have to learn to be happy with what i have especially since the Droid X is such an amazing phone, I probably shouldn't be worried at all. And on a side note I don't believe a one year shelf life could still convince me to buy an iPhone... I love my droid.

Really? You feel it's definately falling down hill after this quarter eh?

That's odd because from the figures that are available I don't see anything coming (yet) that comes clocked faster than the DX out of the box. I don't see anything with a bigger screen. I don't see anything with a higher camera resolution, or anything that shoots better quality video than 720p (although the LG 3D Optimus has a trickier camera forsure). I don't see anything with greater talk time. And last but certainly not least, I don't see anything with more internal storage than the DX.

One device may have more RAM, another may have a dual core processor, and yet another may have a higher resolution screen. But it seems like so far everything that's projected to hit is just finally good enough to compete with the DX where as last year there wasn't anything that could stand toe to toe with it.

This year the competition could certainly go 12 rounds with it, and maybe even win by points in a split decision. But I don't see a contender yet that can knock the DX out in the 3rd round.

But hey, that's just where you and I differ, that's all. I'm not discounting your opinion what so ever.

Not sure if it has been said yet on this forum but there are processors coming out this year that are going to blow this one out of the water...

Texas Instruments OMAP - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
( I know it's wiki so it's not reliable info - but some of the phones listed are releasing Q1 of 2011 with dual-core processors )

OMAP™ 4 Platform - OMAP4430/OMAP4440
(Info on the new OMAP 4 dual core processors)

TI OMAP 5 processor: multiple cores, 4 GHz, 3D playbook
(Info about the new OMAP 5 being released with up to 2.0 GHz dual-core processors)

And even at that time it seems the X will still be a top of the line phone regardless.

I am currently trying to decide on whether to get the DX or the Incredible... I know off topic but any quick suggestions? Do you DX owners feel like the DX is too big at times or sluggish or anything?

Ive had mine for only two weeks and I love it. I even influenced a man at the Verizon store to get the X over the Incredible. Someone in my family has the Incredible and definitely prefer the X, it does seem faster than the Inc. I don't find it too big either considering I previously had a Moto Q9c and its only slightly smaller. I don't even notice it in my pocket. Definitely go with the X.
