I've had my Droid X for almost 5 months now and rather than becoming outdated, its only gotten better. Granted, I've learned to root and do some other cool things with it, but this phone will definitely have more than a one-year shelf life for me. No phone is perfect (and I've had some growing pains with the DX), but it has raised the bar a couple orders of magnitude over my previous phones.
Thank God for this and some of the other Android forums - I'm always learning new things, or finding new apps that I never knew existed that expand the envelope of what this phone can do. Sure - there will be better phones eventually, but in the past 5 months I haven't reached the limit of what my DX is capable of and even after the dual-core monsters have arrived my phone will still be an awesome piece of hardware
The above is definitely my opinion, but after a lot of what I've experienced, seen and read I'm convinced the Droid X has been a great investment and will be a top-of-the-line phone for quite a while to come.
It will be interesting to see what further improvements come when GB is released...
Note - as I've said before, I'm not a fan of Apple's phone products, but I'm glad the iPhone is available for Verizon customers. People can argue about which is better, has a longer shelf life, etc but the important thing is that we have choice. The competition between Apple, Android, Windows7, etc will only improve the quality of which ever phone we prefer - and that's always a good thing
