Did my first root about a week ago with this guide, now using the Elite II rom... Thanks for taking the time to write it!

Root ROOTING For Dummies

Okay, yes I am a noob at this rooting stuff. I have followed the steps of the guide successfully all the way up to the point of launching unrEVOked 3.32 from my desktop. Unrevoked launches, then I plug my Evo into the USB cord, but then nothing happens. The dialog on the unrevoked screen still says Waiting For Device...
Everything went smoothly up to this point, including installing the hboot drivers...
Any ideas?? Please help... Thanks so much!

on your phone did you turn on usb debugging?

I was going to suggest the same thing. And to make sure that HTC Sync is uninstalled. Just the program though, not the drivers.
Thanks for the reply Nick and ocn....I followed the instructions in this guide exactly, but could not get unrEVOked 3 to recognize my phone on this pc. HOWEVER, I just followed the guide on my wife's laptop and had absolutely no problem whatsoever. Her laptop is older and slower....my desktop is quite a bit faster and newer than her laptop, yet no success on my pc. I would still love to know what exactly on my pc is causing the problem.
I am excited that my EVO is now successfully rooted....would just like to know why I could not do it on MY pc... :-( Oh well...

My next suggestion was going to be to uninstall everything from your laptop and start from scratch, but since you got it all figured out, welcome to world of root, where your reality's are simply an iPhoner's dream.

This may be a really dumb question, but do I need to have a PC to root my Evo 4G? Can't I just download the apps (root,ROM, etc.) from the market straight to my phone like all the other apps & stuff?

yeah not sure. sometimes it is htc sync (installing then uninstalling). sometimes it is anti-virus programs on either the phone or even the computer. hard to say.
but good good news, you are rooted!!!!

i might make a couple suggestions:
1)make a nandroid backup
2)never use rom manager. do everything manually. get accustomed to using your recovery.

Ahh only dumb question is the one not asked. Honestly I've heard of people rooting with out computers but have no idea how to or what they used. I would suggest that if you are thinking about rooting to follow this guide to the T, and you will have no problems.
If you run into problems a lot of people are willing to help out.
you need a pc to run unrevoked which actaully roots your phone. flashing a custom rom can be done on your phone however. read the dummies guide and you will not have any issues rooting.
++++1...I suggest, and so do many of the custom ROM devs, using AmonRa. You can flash it with CW or download the zip file and stick on the root of your sd card. Go here for instructions for Amon Ra
EDIT: Just saw that OC has directions to AmonRa in his sig.

yeah, youd need to connect to a computer to utilize the unrevoked method oof rooting, i recall reading somewhere that there once was an app you could download to root, but it was pulled and apparantly it was problematic(hence the reason it was pulled) andwho, from there, you can download roms on your EVO directly, move them to the root of your sd card, and falsh away!! Ive done that with like 7 roms, but i keep restoring to Koni's ES2... its a sweet lil rom

I was using clockwork for a bit, and had several flashes fail, i then was advised to use AmonRa, and presto!!! The same failed rom (that actually failed like 4x with diff dowloads etc etc) worked flawlessly!!
Thanks Nick. Yeah, now that I have accomplished the root, I am feeling overwhelmed with trying to figure out the ROMs, Kernels, Radios, etc....

Take it slow, play with some roms first (roms being the operating system for the phone) , kernels are usually built in on the rom, and are stable enough to run so you dont NEED to change the kernel unless your having severe battery issues or something like that. And all youd need to know about radios(for the time being) is which roms have 4g connectivity, and if you arent in a 4g area, then who really cares? LoL
But of utmost importance, make nandroid backups!!!!! trust me on that one lol
Cool, thanks doofus. I was just reading on Myn Warm 2.2. Think I will give that a shot. Just downloaded the ROM and the suggested Calkulin's combo update (radio/wimax update).
+++1 With what doofus said. The most important thing he said is nandroid! It's so simple to do all of this, a caveman could do it.
Be sure to read and research as much as you can in all the threads. Ask questions, people are more than willing to help. I for one know that in the XDA thread they will race to see who can help you first.
Oh my gosh! Ok Nick...I successfully flashed Myn's Warm 2.2 and the Calkulin's combo update. Everything is good, no problems. Now, a few hours later, I want to add some more updates, but now my dang PC will not recognize the Evo has a hard drive. After I rooted, I had no problem seeing my Evo as hard drive and copied the zips to the root of the SD card...but now, I cannot even see it as hard drive. I tried Uninstalling from Device Manager and reinstalling drivers...any suggestions??

UPDATE: Nevermind...I just saw that USB Debugging was still selected. De-selected and now my pc sees it as hard drive. Wow, need to get some sleep!! ;-)

You made sure you selected it on your phone as disk drive, right and not just charge only? Does it pop up on your pc? Are you on xp/7/mac?
EDIT: What recovery are you using?
This guide is so simple to use it should be required reading material. I have rooted both of my evo's( even the company one) and flashed Kings Ultra on one of them and Koni's Elite on the other. I love both of the Roms and am now on to reading about Kernels and SetCPU. Thanks to everyone on here for all the input and questions i didn't really need to ask anything just read the entire thread and the problems people were running into and went step by step doing everything the way it said to. It really was quite painless. I look forward to giving input where i can as i go and will be sure to ask any questions i may have. Thanks again to all who put work into this thread.

Thanks again to all who put work into this thread.I am using the WorldClockMod recovery, I believe. Anyway, it turned out to be the USB Debugging setting. It keeps defaulting back to selected and when it is selected, it does not want to display as a hard drive on my pc. I deselected USB Debugging and it seems to work fine. BTW...I am on WinXP Pro SP3. Thanks!!

So my question before I root tomorrow is step 1really to wipe your phone (factory reset) and not to back it up instead? Wont you lose all your texts etc? Is backingup your stuff implied or does the factory reset not remove ur important data?
Clockwork? I would suggest using AmonRa, much better recovery method, IMO, and in the opinions of many other devs out there. Most ROMs that you flash to have usb debugging checked as default, at least all the ones I've used. I can't say enough good things about MikFroyo 4.5. I would say give that a try.
