Root ROOTING For Dummies

So I rooted my phone today using this method and everything works fine, except every time I flash a ROM it doesn't get past the boot image. Someone help pleaseee.

First and foremost, Congrats on Rooting ! Unrevoked uses clockworkmod recovery, which can be buggy. Are you using ROM Manager to flash ROM's, or are you flashing them manually?

I recommend you use Amon RA Recovery in lieu of using Clockworkmod, overall, it's just a much better recovery. If you're using ROM Manager to flash ROM's, go to "flash alternate recovery" and that will install Amon RA for you. If you're not using ROM Manager, then you can find Amon RA Recovery files here:

ROM Manager is okay at first, but If you're already doing things manually, then keep doing that way...It's the best way to do things anyways. If you're going to download ROM Manager for the sake of flashing Amon RA (it's the recovery you'll get when choosing "Flash Alternate Recovery" *in* ROM Manager), keep in mind that once you do that, any backups made using clockworkmod can't be restored with Amon RA and visa versa. I suggest the first thing you do, is made a nand backup after flashing Amon RA, so you have a compatible backup. Let us know how it goes.

Go here and dl PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip

1) Download the appropriate PC36IMG.zip for whichever recovery image you want.
2) Rename the file to PC36IMG.zip, exactly, being careful to not rename it to PC36IMG.zip.zip or accidentally unzip the file.
3) Copy the file to the root of your sdcard (That mean the top level, not in any folders).
4) Boot into hboot by turning the phone off, then turning it back on while pressing and holding the volume down button.
5) Flash the file when prompted.
6) When done, rename or remove the PC36IMG.zip file, or it will prompt you to flash it again every time you boot back into hboot.

STEP 11: TRANSFER PC36IMG.zip TO SDCARD
Connect the MICRO USB Cord. There is an option for this in both the Amon RA and Clockwork recovery.
Transfer the PC36IMG.zip to the ROOT of your SDCard.
(How do I transfer with my phone off and the zip file on the desk top?)

Also Do I have to take out the unleased ultra ROM from my sd card before unrooting?

are you taking it in? if you are i would not worry about it too much. i took my phone just recently. i unrooted and had them look at my phone. it was overheating and rebooting constantly. i had the tech look at it and they had it for a few hours. i left my sd card in it with all my nandroids and other evidence that it was rooted. and they had no idea that it was at one point rooted. they had no reason to check the sd card. i'm getting a refurb hopefully at the beginning of next week.

Cool thanks! But can you help me answar the first question I put by saying how to I transfer the zip file to the sd card while its turned off? Should I just put it on the root of the sd card along with unrevoked? I just cant understand when to put it. Sorry

ok so in the dummies guide step 11 is done in recovery. in both recoveries (clockworkmod or amon ra) there should be an option to connect via usb. you can transfer files that way without having to reboot your phone. which recovery do you have?

ok to go to recovery power off and press and hold power+vol down. this will get you to the hboot screen select recovery. it should say at the bottom some place. my guess would be that you have clockwork mod. if that is the case you need to select mount and storage then mount usb storage device. a window should pop up on your computer with the content of your sd card. move the file over to the root of the sd card (not in any folder).

After this new MOD discovery would I continue as mentioned in the steps? Or do I have to add or subtract any thing. Sorry this is my first time I am doing this thats why there are so many questions...

3)select power off in amon ra (last option)

Ok I really havent done anything yet. I am nervous as hell that my phone will stop working or something. But you got to do what you got to do

So far I only transfered the unrevoked file to the sd card and then I stopped after scrolling down on the instructions. okay you know when I just powered down and came up to the white screen, I pressed the recovery and it went to a limeish green page where it had a few options. On that page I got the MOD. Is the page your talking about?

When you say select usb toggle in the green page thats the one yes?

So once the window will pop up I can drag the 36IMG file there?

Also the name which I downloaded is this :

PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed
(So take out everything after the letter G?

yes amon ra is in that ugly green color. that is your recovery and that is where you will select usb-ms toggle and you drag the file over.
PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2 .15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed is the file that you will have to rename. just delete everything except for the PC36IMG.

make sure that you follow the steps.
step 1)flash the unrevoked forever s-on .zip file
step 2)move and rename the PC36IMG and reboot into bootloader(hboot)

obviously that is revised. just make sure that you follow the guide

I think I did the unrooting and after a restart I went back into the hboot screen and pressed recovery. There is a phone with a triangle and explanation point in the middle of the screen. Any advise please

Did you flash the S-on tool and then put the PC36IMG file on your card and have it flash that in hboot? What does your hboot say now? S-on or s-off?

When you boot the phone does it go through the sprint splash screen? Does it look different than it was when you had it rooted? What is the software version and such in about phone after you boot it up?
