Root ROOTING For Dummies

I tried to download/install titanium backup (via Marketplace) and got the error message that said it couldn't acquire root privileges. Also, it said it needed Busybox. Should I have installed that first, then titanium backup?

go into your superuser icon, and give it access. Kill all apps, then relaunch titanium backup. That should fix ya up :)

Do you have the Superuser app in your app drawer? Busy box can be downloaded through Titanium backup once you get that installed.

Thanks Xtreme. After uninstalling it and doing it again, I got the same message. They had a pushbutton for problems installing and I guess it installed an alternate version (I'm thinking due some apps updating and giving problems with the install-idk). But that version walked me through and it seems fine. But I should have reset it to stock settings before rooting it (I'm a doofus/newbie-haha).

But does uninstalling this (or any of the apps before I rooted) affect the root itself? I don't have a lot of stuff/apps on the phone (free apps from marketplace-FB, Yahoo, Tango, etc.) so it doesn't make a difference if I take those apps off (minus the Sprint bloatware).

Installing and uninstalling will not affect root. Root is the unlocking of Nand which is indicated by the s-off in your hboot. Superuser and Busybox are needed to be able to use Root Only apps like Titanium backup and Wifi Tether. As far as the bloatware, there is a list of the ones you can freeze with TB.

Hey guys, i'm trying to flash a .apk for a transparent pandora widget, but i'm not sure how to go about doing it. I know to put the .apk on my sd card, but thats about all i know. Could someone give me a step by step guide on how to put on apk's and new themes? or possibly point me in the direction of a step by step guide?

Try using a file explorer to look at the folders on your sdcard. tap it and see if it asks if you want to install it.

Yeah i have astro, when i find it in there and click on it to install it, it just starts running pandora. Do i have the wrong apk? i was under the understanding that it would replace the regular pandora widget with a transparent one.

If it's already installed, what happens when you long press a blank area on your screen, and select widgets? Is the Pandora you're attempting to install there?

then you should be able to long press in a blank area of your "desktop", select widgets, select pandora, and viola (man i wish waaa laaaa was spelled differently than the instrument LoL)

hmm seems like i'm doing everything right...I guess i'll try looking around for a different .apk to try for the transparent pandora. Thanks for the help anyways.

is the .apk just a pandora widget or pandora? is it a .zip or just an apk.? You may need to push it to your /system, rename the pandor WIDGET that is there to something else, and reboot...if you have an apk. you might have to push it and rename pandora. Please answer the questions i asked first before you do anything, i would hate to have you blame me because you uninstalled pandora and cant get it back lol. Make a nandroid and back up what you have in titanium before pushing anything to the /system folder btw.

EDIT: OK after looking it looks like there isnt a pandora specific widget, it must be in the apk package with pandora. Therefore you will rename your existing pandora.apk or move it to sd card, and replace it with your new apk in /system/app then reboot. nandroid first please and titanium back up. If this doesnt work just move the original back with its proper name and reboot. it is just a pandora.apk file you have correct? nothing else?

After spending many days and nights, finally rooted my Evo 2.2. I rooted primarily so I could use wi-fi tether without paying Sprint that monthly fee. After root completed just downloaded "wi-fi tether for root users" from google apps. The tether loads and recognizes my Archos tablet 101, however, my download/upload signals are all over the board. Most of the time they are down to zero and disconnect. Checking Sprint signals (3g) and get good up and down. No where do they match. I have checked out all settings on wi-fi tether and none seem to help. Turned off modem from Verizon, and did not help. Have been thru most all threads on the internet and have found nothing. Something else I need to do? Thanks for great instructions for rooting unrevoked 3.

I have followed the directions to the T but when unrevoked tries to root the phone it cant find the device. Help!

Have you tried installing and uninstalling HTC Sync?

Does Unrevoked just say "waiting for device"?

Are you sure debugging is turned on and you have it set to charge only?

Have you tried a factory reset under Settings>Privacy?
