Root ROOTING For Dummies

Now Im stumped. it says S-Off, but su access is denied when i try.

Busybox says it cant run because my phone is not rooted (it cant use su).

EDIT: I think my problem is that I need updated su binaries. Anyone know a download? The one superuser gives me is corrupted.

Are you going to flash a custom rom or stay with the stock rom for now? Sprint lover's is very close to the stock rom and is a rooted rom so it will take care of this. There are stock rooted roms you can flash also depending on what you would like to do.

You could try and download superuser from the market also to see if that helps but I don't think Unrevoked rooted your rom and that is causing the issues

I just figured it out. I went to the superuser thread in the XDA forums, and found the su binaries there. And I suppose I will try sprintlovers.

EDIT: Should I get rom manager even with Amen Ra?

Flashing Sprint lovers would have killed 2 birds with one stone I think. It has the Superuser app included and would give you a rooted rom(slightly custom). You can get Sprint Lover's from this thread: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

The rooting guide has steps to flashing. Now that you are rooted, always make a nandroid backup before making any changes to your phone. If something goes wrong or you don't like the change you can easily go back to the way your phone was. I do not use rom manager and do not recommend it. It has been known to be buggy and does not work with Amon RA. I would get used to doing things in recovery. There is not much to it and if something goes wrong and you can't get your phone to boot, you will be more comfortable using recovery to fix it.

Here are a few ‘newbie’ (noob) questions that sorta go beyond (or out of scope) from the rooting manual:


  • Are there any videos that show how to change roms/kernals (especially from ‘stock’)…especially the step by step process after using unrevoked?
  • Are there pics of such roms/kernals to give an idea or example of the types available? I’ve been to XDA and may have gotten lost in trying to find such (haha).
  • Which roms/kernals are great at extending the battery life of an evo? I know that by rooting, you can freeze certain apps (titanium backup) if using the stock. But I’ve read (if true) that you can extend the battery life significantly of a stock battery by using certain roms/kernals as well as change the overclocking/underclocking features. That was one of my main goals for rooting, other than the wifi/tethering option.

I'm sure you can find a ton of video's on Youtube on how to change ROM's or kernels. What type of ROM are you looking to try? Sense based or AOSP? You can also find a list of available ROM's here and they all should have screen shots of the ROM, if not you can search for a specific ROM on YouTube that will more than likely have a review of the ROM as well.

As far as the kernels go, many forum members (including myself) have experienced great success with Netarchy kernel's, you can find them here. When used properly in conjunction with SetCPU, you can achieve unreal battery life. When I was using Netarchy (I'm now using Savagedzen since I'm on an AOSP ROM), I could get 3 days unplugged w/ light use and 2 easy w/ moderate use. Since every Evo reacts differently to kernels, the best thing to do is make a nandroid and start flashing!
 
I have 2 questions about rooting:

1. Does rooting void your Square Trade warranty?

2. Can you unroot it before you turn your phone in to get it fix?

I noticed that the Sprint Lover's instructions on the above website do NOT have you do a Wipe date factory reset or Wipe Dalvik-cache as in the Rooting for Dummies instructions. Is these steps no longer needed? (I did create a backup of course).

It is always necessary to do a full wipe before flashing a different rom. Kernels, themes, and updates to current roms do not need a full wipe but rather just Wipe Cache and Dalvik-cache. We recommend using Caulkin's Format All in addition to wiping userdata/factory reset when flashing to a new rom.
 
Per above (which brings me back to the original post), ClockworkMod v3.0.0.2 is installed on my phone and thus Caulkin's format won't install.

Calkulins just instructs the recovery to wipe boot system data and cache for you, its a tool...you can wipe those on your own without it.

You can always switch to cw 2.6.0.1 or amon ra 2.3 and then it will work as will every other rom...

I have a wipe all that came with a rom i d/l'ed its not caulkins (or at least its not named that, i think it came with an aosp rom i tried out once and i just kept the wipe zip) is caulkins that much better than the other wipe.zip files out there?

There's nothing special about a format-all zip. They are all basically the same, and very, very simple. For that matter, I don't know why someone doesn't just take one and update it to edify, so that you can use it with CW 3.0.0.5. In any case, this is what calkulin's does:

show_progress 0.1 0
format BOOT:
format CACHE:
format DATA:
format SYSTEM:
show_progress 0.1 10

As you can see, the simplest and most effective way of doing this is how almost all of them work.

Keep in mind, also, that any ROM update script (ok, almost any) is going to have the *exact* same lines for boot, system, and most likely cache. It's up to you to wipe data, though. The point is that there is nothing "special" about this. It's just a way of verifying that everything got wiped, but it's not doing anything out of the ordinary.
 
OK, then. Since I ran into the issue not being able to run Caulkin's script because my ClockWorkMod was at 3.0.0.2, isn't it correct to assume that even if I ran the wipes manually, I would run into the same issue trying to flash Sprint Lovers?

If so, it seems that I'll need to go back to ClockWordMod 2.6.0.1 regardless. I obviously want my NAND backup to be functional, so what is the easiest way to go from CWMod 3.0.0.2 back to 2.6.0.1? Is there a simple .zip somewhere to flash or is it far more complicated to revert the recovery software to an earlier version?

You can find the appropriate recovery version here. I recommend using RA Recovery (it's overall a more solid recovery IMO). You can flash RA Recovery 2 ways, 1. You can "Flash Alternate Recovery" from ROM Manager 2. You can find it at the thread I referenced above as well as instructions.

Try redownloading Sprint Lover's and flashing it again. If that doesn't work, try reflashing the recovery and see if that might be what's happening.

Are you trying to flash the PC36IMG.zip version from recovery? That won't work.
 
I was able to view the extracted Sprint Lovers in Windows, so I doubt the download was corrupted. Caulkin's worked and performed the wipes, so it wouldn't seem that RA 2.3 was corrupted either.

Tried redownloading and reflashing both, same results.
Have restored my backup for now. Hopefully someone can help!
