Root ROOTING For Dummies

Ok first thing you need to do is flash the alternative recovery option within ROM manager so that you are using Amon Ra and not Clockwork, BTW dalvik cache in clockwork is in the advanced menu. I highly suggest you use Amon Ra though, much better recovery options.

CM is good but not if you like sense, ie all the widgets, etc. Mikfroyo, IMO, is the best ROM out there and you can get it here. A lot of people also recommend Myn RLS. I've tried them all and again IMO Mikfroyo is hands down the best, fastest, and smoothest out there. The community there is a lot of help as well. My id is the same in there. Feel free to log in there and ask some questions.

I would seriously try to flash a custom ROM before you unroot and see if that fixes your issue. Let me know if you have any other questions. Again the mik community is great and will answer your questions as well.

Nick, I found this thread telling how to flash a custom ROM but it's from last August. Can you check it out and tell me if anything has changed? Thanks for all your help!

Ooooooo, I wonder what those are! :p

:D Requires an entirely different type of guide!

Oh boy...I'm going to get myself into trouble, aren't I? But we aren't ENTIRELY off topic...I mean, we are having dialog to come up with solutions to obtain the EVO 3D, and at some point we will be rooting it, so it fits...right???!! :p

Ummm..What thread are you talking about? Just use the directions in the OP here. I can give you some basic instructions though, because it's pretty simple. If you are flashing MikFroyo follow this guide here and quite honestly that guide would pertain to mostly any ROM.
Here's some basic steps though.

First and foremost if you aren't using Amon-ra, you need to be.

1)Download your custom ROM you want and put it in root of your sdcard
2)Boot into recovery
3)Make nandroid backup of your current setup
4)Wipe everything except the sdcard stuff a couple of times. factory reset, cach, dalvik cache, data, system, and boot..you could wipe battery stats and rotation stats as well if you wanted.
5)Flash custom ROM and if you are going to use Custom Kernel in same recovery session, if you aren't going to use custom kernel don't worry about that, just flash the ROM and reboot.

Your first bootup might take a little bit so don't panic...If it sits on any one screen for longer than 5 minutes, just pull your battery and stick it back in and boot up and you should be good to go.

After much work I finally rooted my phone. It was great. I really did this so I could Tether. Recently, I made a mistake and updated and when I did I really screwed everything up. Tried to un-root but could not figure how to transfer to root of sd card. Followed instructions to a t but could not transfer. eventried to re load Unrevoked, came up with not finding radio. The phone re=boots all the time. Hotspot from Sprint keeps coming up with tether for root users. I should not ever updated. Now I cannot figure out how to un-root. If i could i would re-root. I did the unrevoked update is where it all started. Worked every angle for days. Any thought would be apprec.

What hboot version do you have and do you have s-on or s-off? Can you still get to recovery?

Which recovery do you have and do you want to unroot or just get your phone working again even if it is still rooted?

Does your pc recognize your phone when connect it?
I just want to get my phone working again. i have lost my ability to connect to my Blueant blue tooth, which i had before, also, my "wifi tether for root users" is now all mixed up with sprints hotspot and neither will tether. I click on tether, and part of the time my phone re-boots. I felt that if I could wipe all out and start unrevoked all over again. By the way, my computer recognizes, and can now transfer to my evo, which i have had a problem before. Now I just want to tether and get my bluetooth back. When i initiate tether, i get the hotspot symbol and also the symbol for wifi tether. This is all screwed up. Worked fine til I thought I needed to download update. I rooted just to get tether. Thanks so much for your thoughts. Have a blessed day and weekend. Dewey in Tampa

I have a Wireless Tethering app (wifi Tehter) installed on my phone and while it works with my 4g service it will not work when just the 3g is on.

I noticed that mikroyo 4.61 also comes with the sprint hotspot, however i cant figure out how to get it to work. I have pressed opened the app but it simply does not do anything and while I am able to connect, I am never able to get an internet connection. (It also gives me a warning that I am not subscribed but can do a network etc.)

Also I tried to use the phone's usb to hook up the phone for tethering and I couldn't get that to work either. (When plugged in to computer it gives you an option)

So basically I have to have 4g on to get my tether to work. Id like to be able to use the 3g and save some battery life. Any ideas?

You were actually answered over in the mikmik site here. That would be your best bet on asking about mikfroyo ROMs.

I would suggest doing a full wipe from recovery and doing a fresh rom flash. Alot of the custom roms have sprint hotspot hacked so it works. Mikfroyo, Koni Elite, Kings Unleashed, and Fresh are among the stable roms with everything working. You can find links for them here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html along with a link to Caulkin's Format All which is a good one to use to do a wipe before flashing. You flash it just like a rom just don't reboot before flashing a rom afterwards. This should get you going again without unrooting. For future reference, you can not accept an OTA update from Sprint or HTC for software. It can have the affect you have seen first hand. It is better to wait for a rooted version of the new update to come out and flash that. It is only a couple days usually to get rooted roms out for new OTA updates. If you still have issues, let us know.

Another thing that I am not sure you were informed of, it is a good idea to always make a nandroid backup before making any changes to your phone. It allows you to return to a stable working phone if you have any issues like this.

I tried CryanogenMod & you're right, it did fix the problem. I want to try Mikfroyo now but I'm a little stuck.

I tried to switch to Amon Ra through Rom Manager & I keep getting an error that won't let me do it. Any suggestions on switching another way?

Do I have to use a new kernel with Mikfroyo? If so, which one (name & version) do you use/suggest?

Yup saw that, figured I would post on both forums to get more solutions. Also it is not a problem with Mikfroyo, I had the same issues when I was first rooted just never bothered to fix it.

Thanks for the tips guys.

What did the error say? Try this method here if you want.

No MikFroyo comes with the stock htc #15 kernel, however read this guide here about kernels, it's pretty in depth but lots of good info in there. Here is another great starter guide for learning about kernels, link.

Here's a link to all the kernels out there. The one I use is Netarcy 4.3.2 cfs sbc havs more and I can get 24+ hours out of my stock battery. Here's a link to the netarchy thread in xda and here's a link to all their kernels.

Biggest thing is to make sure you flash sense kernel for sense ROM and AOSP kernel for AOSP ROM. Don't mismatch them.

Ok new question....

I oten check my speeds over 3g and 4g using the speedtest.net app and then while tethered to the evo I also check on my computers web browser. My issue is that whenever I go to test I am neve ron the right server. I am constantly in another state (I live in chicago) and I am always connecting to Michigan or Indiana etc etc. It is the same for both the phone app and the internet while tethering from phone. When I change the server to Chicago, I get MUCH faster speed tests. So I am worried that my phone is not connecting correctly and my speeds are suffering.

Is it possible that my phone is somehow not connecting to a local tower (or something) and I am connecting to something further away? I know it sounds dumb that it would even be possible to connect that far away.

Odds are if your cell signal is strong you are connecting to the closest tower. If you google search "how can i tell which cell tower i'm connected to" you will have a lot of results. I did that earlier when I first started to respond to you and was going to give you some links, but then my computer decided it wanted to reboot and I had some other things come up.

HTC Desire
Device Build Number: 1.25.557.3 CL232020 release-keys
Android Version: 2.1 update 1
HBoot Version: 0.98
unrevoked Version Used: 3.32

I saw the FAQ that says:

Hmm many times I do have a weak signal, on 4g I only get about 1 Bar sometimes no bars and I get a "4g antenna is on tap for service". Ocassionaly in some spots in my house I can get 2 bars and I acheive dl speeds of 5mb - 7mb. But that is spotty and doesn't always happen in the same spot. It seemed my reception was better before I flashed a custom ROM.

Ill google what you mentioned, I did search a bit for something like that before I cam here but there was so much junk I got discouraged. O)

Yeah, I'm kind of mad my computer crashed on me because I had a good one for you I was going to link to you.

I think the 4g antenna might be a different thing and might be located in different areas than the 3g antenna. Just be thankful you get 4g ;) If I was downloading at 5-7mb on my phone, I would cancel my cable internet and save about 60/month.

Here's a couple links. Link 1 and Link 2

Doesn't seem to be a way to find out for sure.
