Root New Rooter Needing Encouragment lol

That's the tricky bit. I have the redux source locally which compiles fine and I have aosp source and cm7 2.3.4.

Somewhere in there is the answer.

getting back onto my topic ... yes people its all about ME lol

Following the guide for partitioning the new sd card when it comes, I use the instruction below :

1) Backup your SD card contents to your PC
2) Download GParted Live cd, burn to CD and boot to it GParted -- Live CD/USB/PXE/HD
3) Connect your device in Recovery mode and mount as USB mass storage
4) Resize the existing FAT32 partition from the back, leaving space after it and create an EXT partition in the space. Steps for the GUI are below.

  • In the drop down menu (top right) select the SD card (be careful not to select your HDD)
  • Right click on the FAT32 Partition and select resize
  • Press the Up arrow on "Free Space Following" until you have the desired sizes
  • Click Resize
  • right click in unallocated space and select New> EXT format of your choice
  • Click Apply
1. I am assuming I can do without step 3 as I could do it with a card reader rather than put in phone ?
2. If I was using 1gb for my apps to sd space, would that mean on a 16gb card the FAT32 space should be 15gb and that the EXT will be the 1gb (just want to make sure I do it the right way round)

Step 3 is invalid if using a card reader.

In regards to your last question. Yes and no.

a 16GB card is not actually 16GB. Its 14.9GB there abouts.

This is because a GB in software terms is a multiple of 1024 (1073741824 Bytes). However, in Hardware terms (HDD,s SD's etc) its 1000(1000000000 Bytes).

So to make a TRUE 1GB ext partition (1024MB) , you will have less than 15GB free left over.

yeah I figured I would lose some as they never are what the say they are, just kept it as those figures for ease of asking.

Just need to try download gparted from someplace else now, every copy and mirror so far to date has stopped a third of the way through the download and wont restart .... mmm weird !!!

Well card turned up this morning, so it got partitioned and thats me all rooted now with redux rom installed onto the phone and my apps cackup reinstalled ... all so far went pretty pain free

So want to say thanks to those that helped, you people rock !!!

couple of questions :

1. Anyone else notice that the auto-brightness doesnt work, well it appears to for a minute when booting then goes quite dark or is that just my phone ? Then sometimes I close down screen, reopen and its bright again ? This a known bug ?

2. Apps2sd definitely got a lot more space now than i had before, but I put a 1gb ext3 partition but my storage space is saying 67mb free (prior to rom install that was about 20mb), I would have thought I would have more space than that ?
(Titanium backup info is saying sdcard a2sd - 1.03gb (994mb free), is the stuff installing on there or just in the normal partition ?
Quick system info app is saying - a2sd total 0.96gb, free 899mb
what one is right and i should be reviewing ?

You need to move also Dalvik cache to SD card. This is done by flashing apps_dalvik2ext.zip (get it from Redux ROM page).

Thanks for that, is there a link with a how to anyplace you know?

Will this muck up my system now, I have just put everything back to the way I like it

Not much to it - you get the dalvik2ext zip from the Redux download page, put it on your SD card and flash it. That's it.

I'd always do a nandroid backup before a flash, but no, it won't muck your system up - the only thing you'll notice is that you have more space left.

well all has went well since I did this, no disasters happened, couple of reboots or force-closes & all is good in the world lol

One thing, obviously HTC Camera functions etc are gone now and in one way thats good, but notice self timer isnt there (good to put on for 2 secs when taking a pic to stop any shakes) and auto-focus aint as good especially on close up shots (handy for work stuff)

Anyway I can improve, any other roms with better camera ?

Please dont suggest buy an actual camera lol, when im out at customers etc, this one in my phone worked really well to take close-up stuff for sending back to the work and saves carrying two items

Not sure what features are there, but Hadron likes to use Miui camera. That can be flashed. he posted a link recently.

question .... when Redux gets an upgrade eventually after developer finishes exams etc, can i flash this directly over the top of mine without wiping first ?

I know others say you dont need to wipe to flash an upgrade of the same rom, but I have flashed on that different camera but will that matter ?

Also, do you guys do a fresh install everytime anyway (ie wipe), I know with my archos firmware updates I find it performs better if I do a clean install rather than just a install over the top of existing.

It may be academic by then, love what I have with Redux been very stable, but I may have moved onto a different rom by then to try different features you get with them, Holy crap its official .... Im now addicted to tinkering lol lol lol

It will flash without a wipe. I t4end not to unless I encounter issues. Youll need to reflash teh camera though as that is in /system/app and /system is entirely overwritten by the rom

need help, something really weird going on with my phone

everything was running fun since i installed Redux 1.2, then I put the Miui camera apk on there and again everything fine.

Today installed the ManU kernal (eviollets kernel) from shauny's post here http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/331081-redux-battery-life-amazing-2.html and then setcpu app and since then a couple of weird things have happened.

1. photos & video's have disappeared
2. when phone was switched off and battery removed (to make sure sd card was seated although I didnt remove it), time went back to 00:00 on 6th Jan 1980 until I hit the accpet network time date bit.

Number 1 is the bit thats a nightmare, earlier this afternoon, after taking some photo's at work, I hooked phone up to laptop and when I went to copy them over (i could see them in my pc's file manager), it then said the files were not present when I went to paste.

then when I unplugged phone, went to check in phone gallery, they were not showing up. Plugged my phone back in to pc and the windows check-disk utility came up automatically to repair the sd card, so I ran this but photo's still not there.

Took some photo's and it was hit and miss whether they would stay on the card or not.

Now I know for a fact 24 photo's & vids were in the folder at 4.30, when I checked at 5.50 only 3 files were there, its as if they have been deleted

Anyone got any ideas, its not so much the files being lost, its going forward, dont want even more going missing or as im going on holiday next thursday my holiday photos not happening.

ps. I did a clockworkmod backup before I installed the kernal, so if need be I can go back to where i was this morning before install

could be a faulty sdcard or the mbr is knackered.
i remember someone fixed it if it was the latter, InfernalByte i think it was

but yeah sounds like one of two

Master Boot Record. The boot sector of the SD card, where the goldcard image is written to. Infernal Byte wondered if uploading a goldcard image would fix the mbr, but not sure if he reached a conclusion.
Reformatting would fix it in gparted probably

would that explain why these files have disappeared and only after the kernal change today ?

copy my files over from my card to my pc incase i need to format and getting error messages

Error 0x80070570 : file is corrupt or unreadable

local-album-cacheindex
local-meta-cacheindex
local-image-thumbsindex
local-video-thumbsindex
picasa-thumbsindex
local-skip-cacheindex
local-image-thumbschunk_14
local-image-cachechunk_3
amongst others

Could explain files vanishing. Relation to kernel flash is most likely just coincidence - many of us are using ManU kernels, and I've long ago lost track of how many kernel flashes I've done, and have never had anything like this as a consequence.

seems to be anything that is image related that appears to be corrupt as its now saying that actual .jpg files are corrupt also

do you think if i were to restore my backup prior to the kernal change, it would give me access to the files it would have lost to allow me to fully copy the sd card contents onto my pc

or

should I format my sd card then restore the back up from this morning

or

doesnt it matter what way round i do it ?

The nandroid backups don't back up media files from the SD card, so a restore won't bring them back.

Remember that your backup is on the card itself, so don't format the card without copying that onto a computer. In fact right now I'd copy whatever you can onto a computer, because I don't trust your card. Do you know that it's only media files that are being corrupted, or is it just that those are the things that are being written to card at the moment?

I'd be tempted to try SUroot's goldcard suggestion in post 42, simply because if that does work it might fix the card non-destructively (whereas a format, by definition, will wipe it). But I don't know if there's any way that could make things worse, so I'd copy off everything you can before doing anything else.

copied off what i could, when i got all those error messages above and have just reformatted with gparted, would rather start from scratch if it might fix it for future, but going to do my 8gb card also that i have had for over a year so i have a backup if i need it, especially when away on holiday

Use handyrecover from the toolbox thread to try and recover any corrupt.or lost files

as above was getting too worried the who card was going mental, so best to try reformat

daft question probably - but it would be anything to do with the setcpu settings would it, could that affect a sd card .... probably just clutching at straws but im just praying it dont fail again
