Root First step: Evo 4G "overclocked"

I wanted a new "smart phone".

Walked in to see what was available and walked out with an Evo 4G.

But here's the thing. Something didn't seem right. I found out how to check phone info and found the numbers didn't match.

I like the phone a lot but the story seems to always be changing when I ask questions.

If you tell me that I should stop asking questions from the store and guy I bought it from I'll understand. But if that's the case how do I get this thing to work right?

One thing he told me is that in order for this phone to work right on the network it has to run 2.2. He also told me to never hit "update".
When I go into software information it says 2.3.3
Most feature work but not all of them. Wifi says connected but everything comes up "error" when I try to make a call or go to the web.

Should I try to return it?

BTW I called HTC and they were cool about not asking me for name and SN. They did say they would not honor warranty.

How much should I say?

Did you buy the phone from an authorized retailer? Kind of sounds like you bought a "broken" phone. The phone should run fine on any official android os for the evo.

This is the rooted evo4G section, so chances are you're in the right place. If the rep told you to never hit update, it seems you might be rooted.
Do me a favor. Go into your phone settings and see if there is a "Power" category, if so select and um-check fastboot, if not ignore this step.
Power down the phone, wait about 10 seconds or so.
Hold the volume down button and the power button down simultaneously until a white screen appears.
Post back with all of the text you see.
Then use the volume key to select recovery, hit the power button.
Type what you see here too.

Edit: Welcome to the forums btw!!!!!! :D

Yep bought it from an authroized dealer but not for Sprint.

So you are trying to use an evo on a non sprint carrier? Weird, didn't know retailers supplied those types of phones...

I believe the phone would have to be rooted and running a custom rom/radio combination to do that, but I'm not too familiar with the evo/sprint network.

Edit: Welcome to the forums btw!!!!!! :D

Thanks for the welcome.

So here's the thing about your instructions. A few days ago the sellers "man" took the phone apart to "clean" the ear piece screen and the speaker because it was clear that the phone had been used and had some funky DNA particles here and there. This "man" put the phone face down on a granite counter top and in the process of "cleaning" he scratched the protective film. That meant that I had to go back the next day to get a new screen protector. That night I downloaded some music and noticed the volume rocker didn't work.
Now this seller hasn't replied to my calls and emails, so now what do I do?
I can try to see if the volume works for the process you asked me to do. Should I wait until you figure out if this action will somehow make things worse? I think it's best for you to know this part before I try using something that is not working.

Thanks

It is working on a network but not the offical sprint network:eek:

Fast boot is now unchecked.

If the volume rocker doesn't work, the phone will just boot normally.

This sounds like you bought the phone just from some "guy" not a retailer. I'd try to get a refund if you can get a hold of the seller. Phone seems to be broken in more ways than one.

+1.

I'm afraid if the volume rocker is damaged you cant get to Hboot. :(
Thats where the magic starts with rooted phones. This screen also tells us if the phone is rooted and what is on there. Recovery is where the heavy work gets done, like flashing custom roms kernels, etc..
If we cant get to hboot there isnt much we can do to help you fix your phone.
Try to get the volume rocker fixed or get a refund for that piece.

Funny sorta but I was going to ask if I should attempt to take the phone apart to see if the rocker ribbon is connected ( it worked fine before he took it apart to clean it ) Or if there is a way of searching for someone in my area who can?
I can go back to the store tomorrow when his "man" comes with his laptop to program the phones to work on the network. This is the same shmo who scratched it. Both HTC and the network provider want me to drop a dime on the dude which I don't want to do. I like the phone especially without ear wax and hairs in it. But if he is my warranty I'm less than impressed.

I'm pretty sure I can do a better job taking it apart than shmo. In the mean time I read that there is an app which allow Evoytes to hboot without using the volume rocker. I'll download it and try to get the info you asked for and write back in the AM.

Thanks for hanging in there with this X, whatever it is that I'm dealing with here.

Did I mention how much jing I droped for this phone:confused:

PS And now the phone won't power off.

You are rooted and still have hboot version 2.10 which is a good thing. I would see if you can get the volume problem taken care of or get your money back. If you are stuck with it, you will have to learn how to use something called ADB to get anything done in recovery. It allows you to command your phone through your pc. There is a lot of reading to be done to learn how to use it so save that as a last resort. I would push to get the rocker fixed. Once you get that done, we can get you running a custom rom in no time. The reason it says 2.3.3 in the Android version is because most likely they flashed a rooted stock rom or custom rom based on 2.3.3.

You might need to pull the battery to get out of the bootloader since your volume rocker is not working.

Thanks Xt, That sounds like good news to me. I'm heading down to the store now. Was hoping that someone had good news of any kind.

I am not sure this piece of information can be used by anyone. If so it's just a little bit of giving back: As I mentioned in my last post that free app "Quick boot" got me to the window that Granite told me to go to. I didn't put 2 and 2 togehter to see that I still needed the rocker to navigate to turn it off. Knowing that it would drain the battery and that the store didn't open up for about 5 hours I plugged it back in. Everytime I went back to the room it was still on brighter than a night light. But after calling myself from a house phone and getting my voicemail I hit * first which made the notification message repeat itself. When I looked over at the Evo it was off with the orange battery light on. I unplugged it and expected the previous screen to still be on but instead the phone started up again as if I had powered off. It is now up and running and I am off to the store to ask for my money back.
If he refuses I'll have to read up on all the info that you will provide.

Can the memory in this phone be changed? Most info I read about it says that it comes with 1 gig of memory but when I pull up phone info it says 512. He also took out the 8 gig sd card and replaced it with a 4 gig. He since change that back to the 8 gig when he realized that I know more about getting into the settings than most of his customers.

Will let you know soon where I stand with this.

I believe the Evo 3D comes with 1gb of memory and the Evo 4G comes with only 512. If you get this going and want more memory, the only thing you can do is get a faster sdcard(I recommend the Patriot 16gb Class 10) and partition it to give you more space. We can talk about that more later. Let us know if you get the rocker problem fixed.

Rocker fixed. It took hours. There were two little plastic pieces that go into the switch boxes. They must have fell out when shmo was cleaning it. Another phone had to be cannibalized to make mine work.

What's next?

I do have a few more question about what I was told not to do including keep 4G turned off because of the over clocking. Is there a way of reading out what's been done to customize this phone? Also, should I keep "fast boot" off?

The upload and download rate when tethering seems rather slow. Is the speed relative to the bar strength?

Ok, here's what we're going to try.

Power down your phone, wait about 10 seconds or so, then hold power and volume down at the same time until hboot appears (white screen with Andy riding a skateboard)

Volume down until you have recovery highlighted, then press power.
Post back what you see here.

After we know what recovery you have we can get you flashed to another rom. I'd suggest the stock rooted Gingerbread rom just to start so we can see if it will work on your carrier.
What carrier are you running btw?

In the middle of a black screen ( green letters )

there looks to be what i would call a slightly green hylighted arrow ( forward arrow? ) partially going through a verticle rectangle followed by a gray arrow.

On the bottom left in white letters it says:

Build : RA=supersonic-2.3

Good to see you got the rocker issue fixed and you have Amon RA 2.3 recovery(the better choice in my opinion). Go here and download the Odex version. Next go here and download VR Superwipe. Put both files on the root of your sdcard(top level, not in a folder). Reboot to hboot, then select recovery. Select backup/restore, backup, check everything except recovery, then select perform backup. When it is done, return to the main menu and select wipe. Wipe user data/factory reset, cache, dalvik-cache. return to the main menu and select flash zip from sdcard, select zip from sdcard, select the vr superwipe and confirm. When it is done, select zip from sdcard and select the stock rooted rom zip and confirm. When its finished return and reboot then phone. It may take a bit to boot up(5-15 minutes) the first time but when its done you will be running the stock rooted rom that was released with the latest OTA.

What carrier is this running on?

I worked all this weekend, thanks for helping this one for me. :)
Still haven't heard what carrier, might make a difference, maybe not.

I'm trying to access these link from my phone. I'm still kinda awkward with changing the screen size and basics like that. The other thing is a question about connecting my phone to my computer and downloading it that way.

Can you clear this up for me?

And i'm still wondering about the fast boot being turned off and whether i should keep it off or turn it on and off depending on what i'm doing.

the fastboot you can leave off. you do not need it. most roms have that unchecked anyways.

as far as your phone and downloading goes, you need to connect your usb cable to your phone and pc. on your phone you need to switch it to disk drive. a window should pop up. just transfer the file from your computer to the root (no folders). after it is done then on your phone select charge and you can unhook the cable.

not sure if that is the answer you were looking for. if you have more questions please feel free to ask.
