Root First step: Evo 4G "overclocked"

Yes, power button = Ok/select, volume up/down = move up/down....

get into bootloader (vol down + pwr), use vol down to select recovery... let it load, may take a min, then go in and look for backup/restore, and preform a nand backup, select everything under the backup menu, it may take 2-10 min (possibly longer), Once that is done, u can select return, then scroll to wipe, go ahead and wipe everything except sd card, and wimax (cant remember if wimax is a selection in amon, but dont wipe it if it is), it is most important to wipe factory/data reset, cache, and dalvik cache... after that is complete, select return again, and look for "flash zip file from sd card (might say install instead of flash, cant remeber) look for the rom (whatever.zip) u put on ur sd card, and select it, it will ask if ur sure, (as it will for everything u do) select yes, and let it do its thing till finished, then select reboot, and wait... the first boot may take a while (up to 30 min, maybe longer depending on the rom u chose).

Its important to make sure u have a fully charged battery, and wait for the process to finish, just do as I said above, and u should be just fine.... The only thing that could really mess things up is flashing radios, wimax, etc... I know this from personal experience :P

Good luck

Thanks Team. So this 4.24.651.1 ROM is The ROM?

Like i said in my last post most of this stuff is all new to me. Trying to catch up and there is a lot to read.

Last night i took the Evo out of my pocket and at the same time answered it without knowing. My GF got to listen to my whole conversation with a friend. He said she was fat. You can imagine how that went over. How is it that i couldn't even tell that i answered the phone? i guess hitting the power button lightly once doesn't disconnect the call?

Oops! Couldn't have been pretty.

There is a new release that has the voice to text fix from my understanding. You can find it here. As before, download the odex version and flash that. It is the same rom that is included in the recent release. The only changes are that Superuser and Busybox are added to allow for root only apps to be used. Other than that, it is the same as the OTA.

No need to apologize man it is all good :)

In most cases (for example, when you are in Recovery) yes hitting the power button is what will be used to select something. So here let me translate a bit:

Good to see you got the rocker issue fixed and you have Amon RA 2.3 recovery. Translation: Your recovery is Amon RA 2.3, which most of us find to be the best.

Go here and download the Odex version. Next go here and download VR Superwipe. Put both files on the root of your sdcard(top level, not in a folder). Translation: Download them to your sd card. (which you have done as they are in your download folder) Move them to the top level of the card (cut and paste from the downloads folder to where you want them)

Reboot to hboot, then select recovery. Translation: this can be done by shutting off the phone and pressing "volume down + the power button" or in the quickboot app selecting "boot to recovery". If you do the first one, you use the volume up and down to highlight recovery and hit the power button to select.

Select backup/restore, backup, check everything except recovery, then select perform backup. . Translation: use the volume up and down to highlight backup/restore then hit the power button to select. Use the volume up and down to select "perform backup" and hit power to select. Go to each option and check them (puts an X in the parenthesis) by highlighting them with volume up and down and then hitting power to put an X in. (there should be an X in everyone but recovery) Then highlight "perform backup" and hit power and follow the directions. Wait until it tells you it is complete. (takes about 5 minutes)

When it is done, return to the main menu and select wipe. Wipe user data/factory reset, cache, dalvik-cache. Translation: highlight "return to main menu" using volume up and down and then hit power when highlighted. Highlight wipe using volume up and down then select hitting power button. Use volume up and down to get to data/factory reset and select with power button. Follow directions. When finished highlight cache with volume buttons and select with power button. Follow directions. Next select dalvick cache by highlighting with volume buttons and hitting power button. Follow directions. (I believe for all of them it will ask you to hit power button again to confirm...that is the only direction :D )

return to the main menu and select flash zip from sdcard, select zip from sdcard, select the vr superwipe and confirm. Translation: highlight "return to main menu" with volume buttons and select with the power button. Highlight "select zip from sd card" and then hit the power button. Look for the vr superwipe zip and highlight it with the volume buttons and select it with the power button. Follow directions. (confirm it)

When it is done, select zip from sdcard and select the stock rooted rom zip and confirm. When its finished return and reboot then phone. It may take a bit to boot up(5-15 minutes) the first time but when its done you will be running the stock rooted rom that was released with the latest OTA. Translation: when that has finished, find the zip file for the stock ROM and highlight it with the volume buttons. Select it with the power button. Follow directions. Wait as it loads the new ROM on your phone. When it is finished highlight "return" and select it by hitting the power button. Look for "reboot phone now" and highlight it then select it with power button. (if you cant find it, look for "return to the main menu" highlight that with volume buttons and select with power button) Let the phone reboot (could take a bit so be patient) and then you are all ready to go!

What you just did was first make a Nandroid (that was the backup we did) then we wiped your phone (by doing the vr superwipe, clearing cache and dalvick cache along with the factory reset) and then we flashed the new ROM. (selecting and installing zip from the sd card)

Congrats and welcome to the forums! :d

Congrats and welcome to the forums! :d

Thanks handler! And everyone. It's not fun feeling like you just don't get it.

Ordinarily i would have been on this 24/7 until i passed out from exhaustion and in a way i thought i had hit that wall. Fell asleep in the lazy-boy with the laptop on my lap and the TV on. When i woke up everything was blurry. Had no idea what was going on and a couple of days ago after living with blurry vision i find out that i must have double dosed my blood pressure med and my pulse went down in the 40's.
Today 03 Sept i can actually read the date in my task bar so i'm ready to give this thing a try.

i also managed to "back-up" my apps. i had no idea what i was suppose to back up or how to do it.

One step at a time...

You guys are really awesome and patient and i hope someday i can give back freely as you do.

Will let you know how it goes after a supply trip to the store now that i can drive again.
 eye's wide open HA!

Done!

I guess I need to figure out what to do next.

Have any suggestions for links to read here or elsewhere?

There are two Sprint Apps that weren't there before. I'm thinking that I should dump them.

It only took me 3 weeks or so to do this. Now that i've done it once i know how to navigate.

Much thanks to everyone!

Glad you got everything sorted out! What a trip, huh? :D

I wouldn't just "dump" those 2 apps you were talking about till you do some research and ask folk about them, they may be something you need.

Did you backup the phone now that you have it up and going? That was one of the steps handler explained to you earlier.

it is good to have it backed up on your phone, it is called a nandroid.

It is a good idea to keep a few copies of your backups safe on your computer too, especially ones where you have saved Wimax.

Hope you enjoy the phone and your health levels out!

You asked for stuff to read now, this thread, http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html has some good info, as do most of the stickies.

you are already rooted and you don't need to change your recovery, but some of that terminology will make more sense now, but check out some of the rest to get an idea of the possibilities you have with a rooted phone. Just don't forget to have you some backups, nandroids, in a safe place before you take off running.

And you already know someone will give you a hand if you have any questions. :D

Spent more time reading the link you posted I think Granite or X posted it earlier in the thread. Good stuff!

Probably should write this in a new thread but since it just happened today I'll ask here.

How do I get to my nandroid back up?

What about the apps that came with this ROM? Not interested in the Sprint Apps and I tried to drag the blockbuster app to the trash but it keeps reappearing.

Also my google page doesn't look anything like it did before. In fact all I see are new and old messages. No contacts or google voice.

1.go into recovery and select backup and restore then select restore then reboot.
2.download titanium backup and you can freeze bloatware first. then when you know it is safe to remove, you can go ahead and delete it. you can use tb to delete apps.
3.did you sign in to google. if not go into settings/sync and sign in and sync with google.

let's take this one at a time. Do you mean how do you make a new nandroid backup now? I am going to assume that is what you meant, correct me if I am wrong, ok?

Did you read the part in that sticky titled Nandroids? It tells you what they are and why they are important. Now let me quote Mr Handler here to tell you how to do it because he really took the time to spell it out, ok?

Reboot to hboot, then select recovery. Translation: this can be done by shutting off the phone and pressing "volume down + the power button" or in the quickboot app selecting "boot to recovery". Go ahead and post back with any questions about it or the rest of the stuff. Hope this helps!

The back-up that i made before i flashed my EVO; isn't that a Nandroid" or is it just a back-up? On it are all of the apps that i downloaded and that came with my EVO. i thought that all of my contacts and maybe even my messages were there. To be honest i only checked for the apps before i flashed and installed the new ROM.
The new Rom has some of the apps that I had but a few new ones that I am not interested in and since I am not sure what "being on the sprint network" means exactly do I want/need Sprint logo'd apps? And I absolutely do not want Blockbuster.

I think that I read the notes fairly well but I'm not sure that I'm ready for a final exam.

There are a few basic things about the phone/settings/functions that just don't make sense to me yet so I find myself going back to the same places thinking that I will find a way to access/see my SD card for instance by going into Menu, settings, SD & phone storage. But all I see there is "Unmount SD card" doesn't sound like something I want to do.

Also "Fast Boot" is now checked again with the new ROM and i recall that I was instructed to turn it off and leave it off when i Hboot. But little details like that were not mentioned and I figured I better ask before I try to hboot with fast boot checked. So I haven't tried to fetch my ? whatever it is called.

The phone works well but I am not sure that i notice any improvements? And I am not sure what I can do with it now that I couldn't before.

I am eager to know and to play and to further my addiction but for now I am still fumbling with many basic things. ( Do I keep the phone in wifi when I am home and have a fast secure network? )

So while I wait for replies to these baby step questions I continue to read here and a few other droid sites that I've found.

And absolutely YES this all helps!

There is a gmail app that came with the new ROM which I did sign into. That said it is a list of emails and doesn't have the look of my gmail account before the flash. I thought about downloading Dolphin again as my browser. Without it i have no clue what or if there is a default browser. But i figured if i access my gmail account from the browser i can access google voice from there until someone tells me how to get gmail back the way it was.

Should i download titanium now before i try to access the SD card?

Still a low wattage bulb in the EVO world:(

Yes, the backup you initially made was a nandroid, keep it safe. maybe copy it onto your laptop.

I don't know which rom you flashed to, but whenever i flash a rom that i like, and get it set up, I go ahead and make another copy/nandroid of it, and keep it on pc as well. after a while i get too many on the sd card, so I just delete the copies of ones I have backed up on pc. You can give them descriptive names too, like Mik3d, Cm7tiamat, etc, to help you go back to them if you want to after trying some new combo.

If you save all your contacts to google, you will get them back after flashing a new rom when you do the setup thing again, where it asks you to sign in with your existing google account.

there are other apps out there people use to back up stuff as well, like their favorite apps and texts and stuff.

As far as what you can do with new roms, yeah, deleting some stuff is one. The custom roms I have seen cut a lot of the bloat out to begin with. If you do want to delete something, do go ahead and ask in here what people think you should do or how you should go about it.

Part of what I do with new roms is just explore them. too see what features they have and how well they work.

lots of folk get new roms and kernels because they want to improve their battery life, the apps that do that the best need to be used on a rooted phone with the right rom/kernel combination. Just ask if that is something you want to do.

others might want to have an easy and free way to use their phone as a way to hook their pc up to the internet. different roms handle that in different ways, and some apps that do that need to be on a rooted phone to work.

Make good backups, organize them and keep them safe, read up really good before you try something and ask if you have the slightest doubt. Explore as much as you like or find a stable setup that does the job for you.

nandroids backups needs to be done in recovery. sonot sure what kind of backup you did before you rooted. anytime you flash a rom you need to wipe data. so everything will be wiped. but conatcts should be linked with google to get them restores. use titanium backup to freeze and delete apps. i would freeze them first until you know that your rom will be stable.

i always leave that off.

some people swear by titanium, I found it a little complicated at first and still use the free version of appmonster, found in the market, to back up my favorite apps to bring into a new rom with me.

You can mess up your newly loaded setup if you have copied the wrong stuff with titanium and try to bring it back. I am not to straight on that myself, I think it is the apps that show up in red you might need to be careful about restoring.

yes, you should have fastboot off, you don't really need it and it makes getting to recovery harder sometimes it seems.

your new rom should have a browser of some sort. it is fun to check them out but really important to have something, like you mentioned dolphin, that you can find your way around in when you need it fast.

The gmail app looks different than one on web for sure, but it has it's advantages, it will let you know when you get an email with a notification for one thing.

i don't know anything about google voice yet, haven't had a real need for it but some guy got my interest up on it.

as far as accessing the sd card, if you have an adapter and card reader, you can read it right on your pc, be careful what you do and make good organized copies of stuff before you get hog wild in there.

you can also get to it by using your cable and hooking phone to usb on pc, have to tell the phone to act like a disk drive then first. I find that to be slow and troublesome if I am trying to really move stuff around.

Another way to get to sd card is with somthing like an app called astro. the roms I have seen have some sort of sd card file reader on them, just be careful and have you a good backup first.

what rom are you on?

i always leave that off.

I know this thread is long. This is the ROM
Base ROM

4.24.651.1 Odexed

I followed all of the instructions about backing up and using VR Superwipe.

Everything went really smoothly. But the new ROM has a bunch of Sprint apps including one called Nascar that i did try and got a message that it only works with Sprint. So does the ROM become unstable if certain apps are removed?

And i did find a place that asked me if i wanted to sync google contacts, calendar and mail but even after doing that it still doesn't look like it did the first time around. That might not be so bad because the first one had contacts that i hadn't used in a long time and they all seemed to be at the top of the list so it was a pain scrolling to the ones i had just added.

Do i automatically want to recover ALL of what was on my last ROM? i would rather pick and choose the things i want.
Can i view them on my computer and either put them in a different folder and recover just those apps?

It does seem that the battery lasts longer as dustwun mentioned.

How many ROMs are there?

I'll get this right yet I'm sure.

I've been reading posts for close to 4 hours. Still not ready for the final exam. ;-)

about a million, :)

Ok, so that looks like that is a rom a developer made that was based directly on the stock, at the time, Evo rom. It would have the regular sprint bloatware on it.

I have been listening to the guys talk about titanium backup pro, an app that costs about 7 bucks, that lets you "freeze" and app, make it inop for a while, so you can see if it messes anything up, then you can delete it if it doesn't.

I haven't bought it yet myself, still thinking about it. But, someone will know something, just keep listing them and see.

Otherwise though, after you make and save a good nandroid backup, you might want to look at the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html sticky and see what is available. ask questions, pick you one, flash it and see what you think,

Lot of discussion of what is happening in that thread there but you can click on a link to read what is being said about a rom, and the bug report and fixes and see if you are interested in it. Thing is, they will have a lot of the stuff you want gone removed already. One of my favorites is Mik3D beta, another is CM7.

About gmail, i wish I could see what you are talking about. One thing is, you can go online with your pc and set gmail up with folders and stuff and delete emails and contacts you aren't interested in, and you will see it reflected on your phone when you use the gmail app. You do know you can hit the menu button at bottom of phone when in the app and get all sorts of options and tools to use gmail, right?

If you use an adapter with your sd card, for example, you can make a copy and back up the whole card onto your pc anytime you want. if you use an app like appmonster or titanium, you can backup any or all of your apps. thing is, when you put on a new rom, you have to download, from the market, the app you used to make the backup to use it to restore which ever apps you backed up and want to use again. At least that is what i do, it is simplest , but yeah, you can store onto your pc if they are on your card.

Epic win!!!
You flashed the new stock gingerbread rom. It's the closest to thing to being unrooted and is actually the stock software the phone comes with except you have root permissions.
As far as restoring things from your last Rom, if you backed the apps up with titanium backup, you can restore them. Go to the market app, then do a search for titanium backup, install it. Titanium will find the folder on your SD card and show you the list of apps you previously backed up. Select the app you want.to restore and press restore. Just restore the app for now, once you see it doesn't mess with your new Rom, then restore data. You'll pick this up, keep.your chin up and your nandroids fresh! :D

The Rom link give me a lot to consider. And it sound like Titanium is the way to go.

So the free version doesn't do the trick?

Gotta ask Granite the same question. Plus there seemed to be 3 or 4 versions of titanium.

For now i can report that i haven't had to charge my phone but once a night. Charge when i go to bed and it lasts the whole day. Been using my house wifi. One place says that uses more battery but for me ( along with the new ROM ) the battery last longer.

It's like ROM Viagra HA!

Feels like it took forever! But finally i got my first flash done.

There seems to be several versions of titanium. If i understand what i read correctly the free versions do not allow you to "freeze" apps.

I didn't use titanium to back up. The program I used seemed to do the job well and earlier I looked in my backup folder hooking up the phone to the computer; everything is still there. If there is no way to pick and choose which app I want back in my App Drawer then I suppose I can just download them again once I know their name. So there's no drag and drop or cut and paste from the remote drive back to the phone?

1 more thing: if, for instance, Blockbuster looks to be going into the trash but when I go back to apps it is still there is that the ROM over riding my choices?

Here's a note from Titanium Backup 4.2

Error Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please veryify that your ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox, and try again. Trying to figure out what i used for back up.
