I think you may be looking for a different phone.

yeah i think i'll have to... :(

well there's still the chance that the GSM-version (the true Nexus Prime [and not the verizon-exclusive galaxy nexus]) will be the phone for me... as im living in germany, i shouldn't care about the CDMA-device :D

edit: so there's still no android device that can compete with the iPhone 4S in GPU performance... aww man... i don't want to buy an iPhone, the screen is way to small, and its way to expensive :/

Hi!

Would anyone be so kind as to give me a summary of what is known so far? There are so many pages!

Also, is the Verizon version going to have TOUCHWIZ on it?

Yes, but if you take away the widgets (which I have 3) IMO you take away the main things I prefer over IOS. But I am just sick of the battery life of my phone lately and just venting mostly. And to be honest I am enviouls of my wifes one year old Iphones battery life.

I also am frustrated that that the Incredible didn't receive the latest GB update. IMO if you buy a phone at launch you should be entilted to every software upgrade untill the 2 year contract is up.

If you buy an Iphone at launch you receive the updates for about two years and that is fair.

Plus with an iphone you wont have to wait months to get the latest update. That is one area that apple creams android is the update department.

If widgets are designed correctly, they should have minimal impact on battery life.

I develop live wallpapers for Android that use 100% of the CPU and still have good battery life, because the live wallpaper uses 0% CPU when it isn't in use. The average user is only on the desktop a few seconds at a time, so its overall effect is minimal.

Most of the Android's battery performance problems come from poorly designed apps. iOS gets around the problem by not allowing multi-tasking, so a rogue background app can't be wasting resources. Android is plagued with poorly designed apps running in the background and bloated skins.

I guess that depends on your definition of multitasking. Apple claims it multitasks. I get a ton of unclosed apps on my iPad that continue running in the background unless I close them manually.

At the same time I agree that rouge apps do seem to get a piece of the action without me knowing about it.....until I query the CPU using one of a number of tools out there. If it's an app I don't have much use for, I generally just uninstall it.

that's why i was trying so hard to scale everyones expectations back the last few days. that chip, at earliest, is not going to be seen until the s3. but like i was also saying, updated drivers and the higher clock speed of the 4460 should make this one of the top android devices

I remember reading somewhere that a phone design is 12-18 months from start to release. I've done some mobo/embedded design back in the day (not with SOC, and on military stuff so it is a different critter), so I expect that the SOC choice would need to be final early, just not chosen early, as it would be a critical path item with so many other tasks dependent upon that choice.

Was anyone else waiting for a moment where Google stepped up and said:

"Here it is! We figured if we were going to be a monkey...we would be a gorilla! That's why we set the bar so high with the Nexus Prime."

No? :D

the latest os updates. you know like the updates or bug fixes that right now only nexus( and rooted devices have)

I can tell you personally over the last 2yrs of owning a 3gs that I've barely even noticed an update since ios 4. Good for them pushing incremental updates on a regular basis but don't get that confused with meaningful updates.

Can anyone even tell me what 4.3.5 did?

To answer the question from the last page, I will likely stay stock on this one. Giving to the wife next year anyway when I get the 2012 tech in my hands. No sense going all out and then reverting to stock, especially if updates are coming straight from Google.

Geek 101: Android and iOS Multitasking Compared | PCWorld

Apparently they are implemented using differernt types of multitasking

FTA
"Android lets the entire app continue to run in the background. A good example is the Nintendo emuators by Youngh. If you use one of these apps then switch to something else, it'll keep running in the background, sound and all, until you decide to close it or your phone runs out of memory.

On the other hand, iOS4 lets apps keep certain features running in the background (but not full apps; for example, you'll be able continue a Skype call or keep listening to your Pandora station while using another app, but the full app isn't running), have its state saved (as with previous versions of the iPhone OS), both, or neither, as desired. In this sense it could be argued that the iPhone OS has always supported multi-tasking via state-saving, and this most recent addition is simply one more tool for developers used to tweak how their app is experienced."

I don't know. Considering I was salivating for the SGSII and wanted to hurt everyone in black and red when I heard VZ passed on it, this is good enough for me.

We basically are getting the best selling device in the world, with an HD screen, and a whole new beautiful OS to play with.

Also, given that OMAP4460 hasn't been used in a phone yet, it might surprise us with speed, battery life, etc.

I'm excited.

Beautifully said! This is exactly my feeling. We are getting the SGSII HD LTE, but better. The processor, though not Exynos, will be the first in any production phone and if you believe the leaks, will be very fast and great for gaming. This is going to be an awesome phone. For those that feel let down, let me ask what other phone that is rumored to be out in November or by the end of the year for that matter is better in your minds? Spyder...nope! Vigor...nope! I am not willing to wait until next year to get the next best thing. I'm ready to upgrade now. For those in my situation, I don't think you will find a better phone when this is released.

I'm curious if there is no SD slot (prays rumor is only on including a card) then perhaps it will support USB host mode like the GS2. I haven't seen any discussion of this possibility.

At least then we could jack in a 500G USB hard drive for our Titanium backups, reloading our media, or even streaming it to the TV straight from a USB drive.

It would ease the pain of losing the slot. Regardless, though, seems silly to me to have "developer friendly" device that can't test apps from SD. *facepalm*

It's a borderline deal breaker... might go with that Vigor... just have to wait and see when rumor finally bows to reality and the facts are known.

I don't have too much experience with iOS, but I believe that it just saves the state of the apps in memory, but it doesn't take any background CPU cycles. It isn't true multi tasking, but it gives the appearance of doing so.

Google insists that apps be developed following similar guidelines but there is freedom to run the services in the background.

Uhhh Panda, that would have been a nice addition to the ORIGINAL tweet. :D

How about it. Obviously that whole tweet was sarcasm and he's been having trouble clearing that up.

Haven't changed my mind since this whole thread started (months before actually). If a vanilla nexus device comes to Verizon, i'm buying it. Blindly. If there are shortcomings, they will be resolved through the community. Can't wait!

On a side note, CEO WhatsHisFace doesn't like SD cards so it may not have a slot for them is foolish and arrogant on his part if true.

Heh, Steve Jobs removed floppies while they were still very useful for maintenance tasks, he forbade internal system fans so the machines ran hot (equals premature failure), and he didn't allow multi-button mice for the longest time. I didn't agree w/any of that, but Apple seems to have done ok. ;)

What if the cops want my phone because I waas filming them? Concealing a card in my mouth is much easier then concealing an entire phone. I shudder to think where I'd hide a phone!

Good point, I hadn't considered that. I think California just approved cell phone seizures by police, so this is quite relevant.

Thank you Zach. Yes, a widget just sitting there on a screen consumes virtually zero resources of any kind (besides RAM and a little memory space) unless it's actively updating the screen, uploading or downloading something, or performing calculations. A properly written widget or app should only be doing those things when it serves some purpose.

Being on AT&T, what do you guys think? I'm waiting for this to drop like everyone else here, yet I might be on the outside looking in due to carriers.

Should I just jump on the SGSII for $150 now (from Costco) or hold off and see if this will be heading over to AT&T?

I'm not looking to buy any phone off contract so of course it's one or the other. I would have another upgrade coming up in April but I don't see the point of upgrading just for screen resolution (as much as I prefer to have the NP resolution, I wouldn't leave a SGSII for that). Add to that, AT&T is giving me a nice statement credit when I upgrade so a SGSII will end up being free for me ;)

Opinions?

How are you buying a phone now and getting another upgrade in April? Shouldn't it be a 20 month upgrade cycle with AT&T?

I'm in the same boat. I really want this phone but not sure how long before it comes to AT&T. I've seen others say they're buying the 4s this Friday then selling it off when the NP comes out to fund buying the international version and putting it on ATT.

Seems like a lot of screwing around but hey, it's probably worth it :)

Qwerty there is NOTHING wrong with the SGS2. We Verizon folks were quite distressed that we didn't get it. But if you want to wait for HD screen and 4G, that's your discretion :)
